Today is the day!
#Refuge
is officially out, making me an official book author!
I am so proud of this book, and overwhelmed with gratitude to everyone who made it possible. 🙏🏽
Some dreams do come true.
I want to remind us that Palestinians are not some kind of hero race. They are just like you. People with anxieties, ambitions, loves and hobbies, pet peeves.
They're being forced into heroism by conditions no human should have to endure. Let's not forget it.

who literally laid in her spotlight on the day she won an Emmy isn’t a metaphor for what it means to be a WOC in a white mans world I don’t know what is.
Do you remember Doaa who posted this photo of her daughter’s makeshift birthday 24 hours before she was murdered by Israel? Apparently Israeli bulldozers have scraped over the graveyard where she lays with her other daughter.
This is absolutely monstrous. Unsafe even in death.
Look at her. Look at this baby girl.
Right now she is either dead in a car with six dead relatives, or alive, hungry, thirsty and scared in a car with six dead relatives.
I don't know which is worse. I am sick.
Look at this baby girl. LOOK AT HER.
Hind, 7, is a Palestinian girl who has been trapped inside a car with six dead bodies of her family. The car is in an empty street, filled with Israeli tanks and snipers, to the south of Gaza.
Yemen has killed no one with its naval blockade, which it set up to defend Palestine in a genocide that the United States is funding.
Y’all really don’t believe Arabs are humans. Like we aren’t loved. Like we don’t bleed like you do.
Stop killing us.
As someone who has had miscarriages, losing a pregnancy is a deep grief that shifts your relationship with your body and distorts your sense of the future.
To have it happen in a genocide? I couldn't imagine.
You cannot be a feminist and condone this.
From my DMs:
I took virtual Arabic lessons from Doaa... She had a PhD, and her children often interrupted because they so clearly loved her. Obviously I didn’t know her well, but I just wanted to share that. She was a whole person with a full life and people should know that.
Thinking about how Emmitt Till’s mom and so many Palestinian mothers insisted on showing their violated children’s bodies and what horrible, hopeless rage one must feel to make that choice.
I’ve been hearing about Hamas’ attack on “grandmothers,” “toddlers,” and “communities” but Israel’s attack on “Gaza” always monolith, maybe an infrastructure. Do we not have grandmothers and toddlers and communities? Are we not people too?
They killed 32000. They displaced and starved 2 million.
Then they bounced a beachball on their graves, the rubble of their homes, in the space where they loved their babies, dreamed their dreams. On the sea beyond which lies the world that has forsaken them.
Minouche, this is going to be your legacy. That you used NYPD to clear students that were in your care. That you used your voice to dismiss them. Think about how 1968 is remembered. You have cemented your name in history as oppressor; as the person who released the dogs. Shame.
Friends remember youre always 5 min & a good food processor away from wonderful, cheap, genocide free humus.
It’s roughly 4:1 chickpeas to tahini, some olive oil (big glug like 2 tbsp per cup chickpea), lemon for acid, as much garlic as you like, salt and pepper. That’s it!
Israel has surveillance tech that captures calls & she was international news.
They knew a baby was in that car. They waited for the ambulance to come save her to blow it up.
They relish the public cruelty of it. The impunity. You cannot convince me otherwise.
Shai, sweetheart, you're under investigation because FIFTY students have complaints against you. You've been on here for months encouraging the NYPD to arrest your students. Have you seen how violent those arrests are? I said "boop."
I am not the one. Please go play elsewhere.

As I hold my baby I think about pregnant Gazans with no prenatal care or epidural. Mothers whose breastmilk dries due to malnutrition & stress who cannot buy formula.
Women are always the 1st & worst hit by violence. You cannot call yourself a feminist and condone this seige.
These borders are also linked in another way: Israel markets its radar, watchtower, and surveillance tech to the US as “battle tested” in the “laboratory” of Gaza. The US then buys the tech from Israeli companies to repel Black and brown asylum seekers at its southern border.
I think it’s fascinating the 180 he did, from “Israel has a right to defend itself” to this statement.
I wonder how many people there are out there who have made a similar turn.
Chef José Andrés said the 7 aid workers killed by an Israeli airstrike were "targeted deliberately," and he believes the conflict in Gaza is "not a war against terrorism anymore" and instead, it's a "war against humanity itself." Israel blamed the strike on "misidentification."
Increasingly I’m been seeing more and more academics choose themselves, happiness, and their families over arbitrary notions of institutional prestige and I really think there’s a tide shift in people recognizing that this is just a job that’s a part of our lives.
Germany's defense of Israel in the name of the holocaust is a striking example of what happens when history is taught with a focus on events and outcomes rather than processes. The same thing happens in the U.S. a 🧵 1/
That the bombs and the food aid can be emblazoned with the same flag is a testament to the imperialism that structures our world, and how "humanitarianism" serves to reinforce it.
Another image I will never forget.
This is an extremely bad take.
This young man is incredibly courageous and a trail blazer. He is giving up his freedom to support others, and refusing to take an easy route of offering a excuse to not serve. He is a hero.
I hope I raise my son to be half as brave.
i understand this statement is from a teenager and i hope this is a first step. but im going crazy seeing this be applauded at all. is the bar really this low? we are seeing what is happening to palestinians in gaza and the west bank and this is what people are uplifting? as what
Perhaps controversial opinion:
Doctoral defenses should be ceremonial. If y'all had something to say to your student you should've said it. If they're standing there, dressed up, with their families waiting, time is up on anything but fluff questions and fun.
Ok can I share with you something that has made me feel incredibly proud? I just got this letter from a man I taught through a prison education program 10 years ago about how a comment on one of his papers impacted him, and I’ve been sobbing over it all morning.
Yesterday a Famous Sociologist wrote “What does donning kafiyyahs [🙄] symbolize if not siding with the politics of Hamas”
The Kuffiyeh predates the state of Israel. It’s been a self determination symbol since the 1930s.
Stop sounding stupid on top of being genocidal.
I grew up Muslim, in Alabama, during 9-11. I wore a hijab at the time. So I’ve heard some things. But I have never, ever heard such nastiness and hate as from Zionists on this app over the last few months. Y’all need help. You can’t bother me, but it can’t be good for your souls.
I love teaching at CUNY because my students are majority Black & brown, first gen, they work, lots of parents, folks with immigration issues.
That makes their protest EXTRA brave. It also means community should step up and support them.
So make it a point to go up there …
Another takeaway is to remember that Claudine Gay was not pro Palestine. She used her leadership to suppress Palestinian voices. So a reminder to any person of color trying to maintain status/ hold onto power by doing the same; it will not save you.
This man is a racist who must be stopped.
No one is celebrating rape. But you, Shai, are criminalizing your students, particularly Arab ones, and calling for their arrest. There is NOTHING illegal about their protest.
Baldwin wrote this in 1979. It was republished in 2014. It would’ve been timely if written yesterday.
But the state of Israel was not created for the salvation of the Jews; it was created for the salvation of the Western interests. 1/
Let’s be vulnerable.
You’re a grown man, an Ivy League prof, who punches down at students and cries “mob” when your peers stand up to you.
I am terrified of how you behave in the quiet of your classroom. In your office, in your evaluations of students.
You are not safe.
I feel sick watching this video — she was intervening on excessive force asking “what are you doing?” protecting presumably a student. We’ve seen men choked to death in this country.
And the professor here has been charged with battery!!
This is what fascism looks like.
It is worth watching this CNN video from the moment Emory Econ Professor
@CarolineFohlin
came across the violent arrest of a protester on campus and asked the police, with shock, "What are you doing?" That's all that prompted an officer to hurl her to the ground and handcuff her.
PRESS RELEASE: Last night, Columbia University suspended six students, including a Palestinian student & two jewish students with NO due process as part of an investigation into a campus event about Palestine. These students were evicted & given 24 hours to leave their homes.
My yearly gripe:
Abolish recommendation letters.
They are reproductions of inequality. And a pain for faculty to write.
And, if you really want to know what I think of my student, you can cold call me when they're a finalist and I'll gush then.
We are in a moment of extraordinarily vitriolic racism against people racialized as Palestinian/Arab.
Last night I discovered I was the target of a swarm of negative commentary underneath a celebratory post for a book award.
The comments targeted me because I am Arab. 1/
Personally if I’m getting body slammed on my college campus by cops I’m going to yell out “I am alienated from my labor and my fellow man and condemn the goons of capital” but not everyone is on my level.
How little must you value human life to kill 400 people in the pursuit of 1 man.
400 lives. Babies, teenagers with their first crushes, mamas and babas, Tetas who make the best Mahshi. 400 people with 400 worlds. 400 dreamers.
How do we convince you to care?
Since it’s that time of year, my annual statement that I got rejected from ALL the PhD programs I applied to my first try, and got into the top 3 on my second try. I didn’t get smarter or better in any way in the interim.
This is all a crap shoot.
Please do not internalize!
Something I think we’ll process later, after this horror is brought to an end, is how much hateful, racist, shit we’ve read & heard since Oct 7 from people who are otherwise “normal” or even “upstanding” — physicians, lawyers, teachers, etc. The mask has been removed.
The more I think about the student loans the crazier it is.
As a grown woman I need to have down payment and a high income to get a mortgage, but 18 year olds are extended 100s of thousands of dollars for a degree they’re told they need.
The point can only be predation.
Honestly this is it for me. I’ve held off too long. Check out for why you should also cancel your subscription. Enough is enough pretending that this is a news outlet.
@jenni_tabler
For me with multiple miscarriages it was a sign of life so I really needed to feel it but I agree it isn’t pleasant. And it can verge on painful if the baby is big like mine was!
Folks are share acceptances (yay) which means others are receiving rejections.
I was rejected from ALL PhD programs my 1st try & got into 3 of the top 10 programs the following year.
A reminder that this process is arbitrary, and to please not internalize!
We are witnessing a rise in groups forming in the name of fighting antisemitism that are actually hate groups targeting college campuses as battlegrounds.
Their victims are pro Palestine students, many of whom are racialized Arab & Muslim.
A 🧵with reciepts 1/
I am devastated reading about the people killed delivering food aid to Gaza. One had a 1 year old boy.
But Gazans too have babies. They too are killed by Israeli bombs while helping others. They too deserve to be globally mourned. The discrepant attention is crazy making.

Unpopular opinion: diversity statements further center whiteness. They assume applicants aren’t the diversity. And that for others it’s enough to say the right things/ present yourself in the right ways.
If you’re truly committed your app should already show it.
I’m seeing people I respect share this so I’ve decided to thread it. This point made here is problematic for a few reasons.
Palestinians are not afraid to speak out on Hamas.
1/
Any Palestinian who vocally opposes Hamas or its rule is inevitably going to attract interest from a diverse spectrum of pro-Israel individuals who want to see & hear exactly this view from Palestinians. This does not and should never delegitimize opposition to Hamas. This…
Crazy that faculty are being arrested for protecting their own students, the people under their care, while others are calling in the national guard and calling their students terrorists with impunity.
HAPPENING NOW!
CUNY is joining the fray! Encampment just started at City College. So proud of these students and to stand here with them!

Can folks please remember Arabs and Palestinians are as diverse as any other group?
My Arab family cannot agree on what to have for lunch let alone politics yet people on here making blanket statements on what Palestinians think or feel re an issue.
The mismanagement of this center was one of the worst kept secrets at BU, and not only did it hurt the cause of social justice and “anti racism” but also people who worked in a toxic environment or were fired unceremoniously (and not just now). A sad mess.
Not a single college president, including those who BANNED student groups, has been pushed to resign for refusing to protect students who are Pro-Palestine.
The double standard is wild.
When Shai and his protesters try to enter the campus and pull their stunt to occupy the encampment, Shai realizes that his Columbia ID has been deactivated, specifically because he was going to endanger students instead of peacefully protesting on the campus
Palestinians & Arabs have long fought for Palestinian freedom at great cost. I believe one reason for the shifting discourse this time is how our Jewish allies have stood up. I know some of you are struggling with your families right now but your voices really matter.
The point is that centering Hamas right now is a Zionist deflection project. The nature of the genocide has made it impossible to meaningfully engage in political conversation. Meanwhile we can dream of a tomorrow with true Palestinian self determination.
Has it ever been clearer?
gen·o·cide
/ˈjenəˌsīd/
noun
the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.
It is wild to me how anyone can look at campuses of students protesting a genocide, thousands from all different backgrounds, and understand THEM as oppressors. As they face off against police of all forms, sent by admin funded, like the genocide, by the world’s wealthiest state.
ASYLUM IS A HUMAN RIGHT.
People are legally allowed to cross without inspection to seek it - Congress adopted the Geneva Convention's definition of a refugee into U.S. law when it passed the Refugee Act of 1980.
The only "illegal" act here is the Biden administration's.
BREAKING: The Biden admin will now reject all Haitian, Cuban and Nicaraguan asylum seekers who cross illegally, and cap entry from those places and Venezuela at a total 30,000/month.
Biden has deported ~40,000 people to Haiti, amid humanitarian crisis, cholera and gang violence.

We all failed her. Everyone failed her. Everyone failed you. Everyone failed two million people and everyone they love. We will never forget. Never forgive.

Hey!! Journalists!!! A freedom flotilla is headed towards Gaza to confront the illegal blockade!! Who is going to cover this incredible act of resistance?
Journalists: if you’re interested in covering the Freedom Flotilla—which will soon bring 5500 tons of food and medicine to Gaza and confront the illegal Israeli blockade—feel free to reach out to me here!
Palestinian dissent against Hamas is decades-long and well documented.
But ideological distinctions become moot in the face of a genocide, where the focus is survival. It’s one of the many things that make obliterating Gaza to fight Hamas so stupid. 2/
I don't even know how to feel about this.
Maybe the uncommitted vote shook them. Maybe they recognize that what they wanted to get done is done. What's clear is that they haven't grown a conscience. And I cannot believe them.
Their assurances bring me nothing but dread.
Was talking to a friend about writing during a genocide, and how everything seems meaningless. But we must resist the oppressor’s attempt to redefine meaning.
Joy, curiosity, the cosmos, they still have meaning for Palestine, for all of us.
I think we have to recognize that this is a win even if it isn’t what we fully wanted — the recognition that the accusation of genocide cannot be dismissed matters in a desert of justice. I’ve seen Gazans on here celebrating. Let’s take that into consideration in our critique.
Because chanting “Palestine is free from the river to the sea” is genocidal and makes you feel “unsafe” but Israel actually controlling the land from river to sea, on which they incarcerate, oppress and kill Palestinians is civilized, very safe, democracy as usual…
5/6
I’m also thankful
@POTUS
did not heed calls for an immediate ceasefire weeks ago, as Israel could not have achieved this breakthrough had one occurred.
A unilateral ceasefire only serves Hamas terrorists, who broke a ceasefire on Oct. 7th - and vow to do so again and again.
I love this father who spoke so clearly about pride for his daughter and how his fears for her as a parent are trumped by his pride in her for standing up and using her voice against an ongoing genocide. May they both stay safe.

I’ve loved my students everywhere I’ve taught but I just taught my first class
@Hunter_College
, a Migration class, and I’m on cloud nine. Princeton could never.
Palestine is diverse as is Palestinian resistance. It has been Arab socialist & Marxist, it has had Christian leadership, it has been secular & Islamist. Hamas does not begin Palestinian resistance nor does the resistance end with them.
It ends only with a free Palestine.
This precludes an understanding of structure eg the rise of fascism, how one group of people can systematically dehumanize another, how state brutality takes hold, and how it can become acceptable to systematically murder people; to commit genocide. 3/
I've been dreaming for a long time, years really, to be able to make this announcement.

As of today I am officially no longer employed at BU. I'm grateful for my time there and will miss my wonderful colleagues.
I cannot say the same for the trash city of Boston.
Honored to join

@Hunter_College
(check out the new bio) and to be back in my beloved NYC ❤️
In the United States we also see this in discourse around race. Enslavement becomes about bad whites, rather than a story of exploitation, colonialism, and white supremacy. Jim Crow becomes about a bad law, rather than an attempt to systematically disenfranchise people. 4/
Is there a word for when you’re talking to a white woman and from the overdoing of adjectives she uses to describe a person “brilliant! Beautiful! So insightful!” you know she’s talking about a WOC?
Our colleagues have been attacked at places of work, our children have been shot in Chicago, our students shot in Maine. I don’t walk my son wearing my kuffiyeh in Central Park lest I be attacked.
Where is the pushback/ policy against this anti-Arab, Muslim, Palestinian hate?
We are brilliant and you are small and scared.
@USC
cancels the Valedictorians speech for what she might say about Palestine.
Two pages of cowardice, oppression, silencing. Every day, every minute, I am more angry.
Shame!
(Reposting because QT post was deleted).
Teaching history as events, as I was taught in grade school, and as I think a lot of people are taught, means that we isolate the actors as exceptional. Eg bad Germans mass murdered Jewish people. 2/
In an absolutely shocking turn of events ASA council decided to unilaterally and undemocratically strike the 2nd action item on the resolution re divesting from military spending on the resultion we submitted with almost 600 member votes 1/
UPDATE: ASA Council responded & as expected they refused to endorse our resolution & plan to write their own. This spring members will vote between the two.
HOWEVER, they also unilaterally struck the 2nd item on our resolution re: financial disclosure & military investments 1/
ICYMI this is the very prof who used his Twitter to bully a PhD student & encourage search committees not to hire him for having an opposing opinion on this issue.

I am not trying to be a bully & like a lot of these people but this is my former PhD department & I have to say something.
I am wowed that a group of sociologists would hold a panel at Princeton around the “Injustice of Place” and have it be all white. The levels of irony.
This is one reason why we need to teach the social sciences in schools. Because muting process means repeating it, with different proper nouns. Even in the name of rectifying past wrongs. 6/
Re that cartoon: of course you imagine Arabs this way —angry men who hate their children, meek women. It makes us killable, censurable.
Because it would be truly inhuman to drop bombs on loving fathers, innocent babes, and fierce matriarchs. Only a real monster would do that.
An Egyptian man realizes these aid trucks are heading to Gaza, so he throws his produce onto them.
Never confuse the abandonment of some Muslim rulers with the Ummah as a whole. Our hearts beat with Gaza.
Today is the 13th anniversary of January 25th (the day we believed we toppled the regime). I can still feel the rush I felt in my chest. Regardless of what came next, those weeks happened & are testament to the power of people to face fear and demand more. I will always remember.
