Making fun of Taliban fighters for their appearance is racist, elitist, unfair and wrong.
No one should be judged by how they look.
You can comment, critique and challenge what they say and what they do.
Every point I make abt Afghanistan draws a mob of ppl from Pak, India or Muslims of every shade who are mad at the west.
For the last time, Afghanistan is not a pawn in ur idealogical war.
Afghanistan is our home. It’s home to 35million Afghans. Leave us out of ur games.
If you’re not an Afghan living in the country right now, please do not comment on how safe Afghans should or should not feel based on what Taliban say or do.
Feeling safe or threaten is a subjective experience, we shouldn’t allow ourselves to editorialize others’ experiences.
If u comment/analyze/cover what is unfolding in Afghanistan, don’t make witty, sarcastic, or funny comments.
These are painful moments for Afghans. Your words can hurt deeply.
Don’t add to the pain. State facts & ur opinion. Don’t try to be funny. Nothing abt this is funny.
Foreign journalists interviewing ex-gov officials abt what unfolded in Afghanistan, please google your interviewees first to see how many rape cases, corruption charges, human rights abuses, drug & human trafficking cases they have.
Sincerely,
People of Afghanistan
I believe 🇦🇫&🇵🇰 must have good relations.
Afghans & Pakistanis have shared sufferings & can grow together.
AFG refugees often had better experiences in 🇵🇰 than in Iran.
I believe TB & Pak gov can solve the current problems if they respect Afghans’ right of self-determination.
To recap what’s happening:
Afghans are dying of hunger.
UN is warning that Afghans are dying of hunger.
All countries are talking about humanitarian aid.
Nothing close to what is needed is being promised & very little is actually being delivered.
IT MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM
Any country that cares about Afghanistan and Afghans should instruct their airlines not to board top level Afghan gov leaders.
They need to answer to Afghans in an open court about what they did to Afghanistan before they get to leave.
#LoyaJirgaNow
Taliban must appoint a women to a leadership role in the current caretaker administration right now.
Ministry of education could be a good start.
This way they can demonstrate the credibility of their promises that they don’t seek to stop women from leadership roles.
Media blackout of Panjsheer is deeply concerning.
There are many horrifying reports circulating & we cannot verify them.
Since Taliban “control” the area, this could mean they don’t want us to see what’s happening there.
1000s ppl still live there.
Let independent media in.
Taliban need to contract a qualified audit company (some may still have staff in Kabul) and start auditing NDS, Arg, DAB, and AOP accounts.
Millions of USD (in cash) were in these accounts.
Afghanistan's national assets must be accounted for.
Ppl in my village r selling their belongings (small TVs etc) to feed themselves.
1 egg costs 10Afg in Herat. A person needs 2-3 eggs+nan for a meal. It’d cost 850afg/day for a family of 7 to eat egg+nan.
Starvation is a real fear. can’t continue to debate.
#UnfreezeAfgMoney
"More than 70 economists and experts, including Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz, called for Washington and other nations to release Afghanistan's central bank assets in a letter sent to U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday."
Please Please Please
Do not share photos of ppl at their worst moment.
Photos Afghans jammed on a US plane should not be circulating online.
Respect ppl' privacy & dignity.
Certain things are more important than spreading the news.
You can describe the content of the photo
The drone war has only brought destruction upon destruction.
It has not made anyone safer. It has contributed to the spread of hatred, extremism & terrorism.
Most drone strikes are illegal under int law.
Drone war cannot be the future of US war in Afghanistan.
#StopDroneWar
Do I agree with state-imposed gender segregation in universities? No.
Do I support Afghan women receiving higher education despite gender segregation? Of course, YES.
If Taliban do not reverse their decision on girls education, Afghans should use extreme forms of civil disobedience.
Shut down roads.
Camp in front of ministries.
Don’t pay utility bills and taxes.
Our children’s future is not something Taliban get to play with.
This is getting absurd.
If American journalists have a hard time finding an Afghan women activist who was not indicted on corruption charges, they should DM me.
I will happily provide them with a list.
.
@RoyaRahmani
was Afghanistan's first female Ambassador to the US and held the post as recently as July. 20 years on from 9/11, she says "one of the most tangible achievements of the past 20 years, which is the women empowerment in Afghanistan, is at a complete verge of loss."
I am thrilled that my book on Reform and Regulation of Economic Institutions in Afghanistan will be out next month.
It is available for preorder on Amazon and Routledge websites.
You can get 20% off if use the code FLA22 at checkout on the Routledge website.
This is completely unacceptable.
People of Afghanistan, the true owner of these assets, had nothing to do with the tragedy of 9/11.
If anything they have been equally victimized by terrorists who committed the attack.
This is immoral and illegal.
Breaking News: President Biden is moving to split $7 billion in frozen Afghan central bank assets between 9/11 victims’ families and humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. The highly unusual set of moves is expected to be announced on Friday.
This is the worst opinion I have read on Afghanistan yet.
It is typical of the think-tank type talking with hubris abt things they know nothing abt.
Sanctioning one of the poorest countries in the world will worsen a humanitarian crisis for which the US bears responsibility.
I feel disgusted at the Taliban for breaking the hearts of millions of Afghan girls. SHAME ON YOU.
Taliban are continuing their war on education and future generation of Afghanistan.
#EducationPrevails
To Afghans,
Stay culm for now. We will get through this together.
Look after each other. Help each other.
State might have collapsed but Afghanistan has not and will not.
Afghanistan is you. Afghanistan is us. All of us.
Afghanistan is 30+mil proud people.
If u can’t tolerate a number of pro-Taliban women gathering to make a pol statement in favor of Taliban,
+
If u believe the ONLY possible explanation of a woman wearing head-to-toe Hijab is brainwashing & compulsion,
Then don’t talk to me abt tolerance & women’s agency.
Making a pop singer the icon of women’s human rights in Afghanistan is not helping Afghan women activists advance their cause in Afghanistan now. Bad policy. Poor representation.
Some refuse to accept that Hazaras are targeted bcz of who they are.
All AFGs have been attacked. But they may have been attacked for different reasons.
Being attacked bcz of your identity is different. The aim is to eliminate a group. That explains why children are targeted.
Taliban,
Don’t attempt to takeover Kabul by force. It will cause immense suffering
Kabul must be handed over to a transitional gov
Have foresight. U may have the military advantage now but 🇦🇫 won’t be a unified, peaceful country unless it is governed by a gov acceptable to all
If Kandahar & Herat fall, gov loses the right to decide for the majority of Afghans.
U don’t get to speak for the ppl u didn’t/couldn’t protect.
U don’t get to be leader but don’t lead.
We need to call a representative Loya Jirga & decide d future of 🇦🇫 in Kabul, not in Doha
No Afghan was involved in planning & execution of 9/11 attacks.
A portion of the funds frozen belongs to the private banks which means it’s ordinary Afghans’ private savings.
This would be illegal & nakedly political.
Afghanistan has $7 billion in govt reserves in NY that's blocked bc its govt collapsed. Some 9/11 victims want to seize the $ to pay off an old lawsuit judgment against the Taliban. If Biden admin backs them, they'll redirect some to food/medical aid.
Ashraf Ghani and his top security leadership must stand trial for treason.
You don’t get to destroy the lives of 30 million people like this and then fly out.
If you’re an Afghan diplomat abroad and you’re not dedicating all your time and energy to getting aid into Afghanistan, you have no right to call yourself an Afghan diplomat.
Sources: there is a deal on the table.
Ghani would resign in exchange for 6-month ceasefire.
Ghani has refused. He intends to declare martial law & cling to power.
Mil leadership MUST resist this. Ghani will get 1000s more killed. He will cause more destruction.
#GhaniResign
On Panjsheer
1. Anti-Taliban camp is hoping Massoud Jr gets enough int backing to extract meaningful concessions, basically compensate for the leverage Ghani’s escape lost.
I think the best they could hope for was some sort of self-governance in areas where they dominate.
I am unfollowing any “journalist” that is spreading unverified, harmful reports during these sensitive times.
Vet your sources, get double confirmation, use critical thinking.
Basic journalism.
Disappointing.
The new Taliban order on hijab does nothing but create more occasions for Talibs (often young men) to harass & disrespect women & their families (Afghan women were already wearing appropriate hijab.)
Afghans are being denied the chance to live in their homeland with dignity.
TB-supporters downplayed the risk of attacks on Kabul Airport bcz it undermined the narrative that the Taliban could secure Afghanistan.
Taliban cannot govern if they believe their own PR.
Ex-gov learned this the hard way. You can't ignore facts just bcz they make u look bad.
Both Afghan men & Pashtuns are often demonized by colonizers/orientalists & their Afghan intellectual allies.
Afghan men are often portrayed as savages who must be stopped frm hurting their women.
Pashtuns are often painted as violent, irrational & civilizationally-challenged.
Talked to one of these women. She said many were factory workers in Herat.
They worked for 2$/day. Many were the sole breadwinners.
Now they are told they may be out of a job.
Women's rights are not fancy things for the urban elites. They are what many women need to survive.
My fellow Afghans,
If we are to make progress towards reconciliation, we have to respectfully engage with other Afghans specially those with whom we vehemently disagree.
Talking to non-Afghans who agree with you is not helping, no matter how big their platform.
I wanted to write something about Afghanistan Independence Day but it is hard.
I am gonna just say that Afghanistan is home.
It is my home & home of millions of Afghans.
I hope Afghanistan soon become a good home to all of us.
Long Live Afghanistan 🇦🇫
I spoke recently at a conference on Afghanistan that featured mostly Afghan diaspora & int "experts".
I urged them to back whatever initiatives that emerge locally & quit thinking that Afghanistan's problems can be diagnosed remotely & solved by imported solutions.
I am honored that
@UNIDROITorg
's Governing Council has decided to appoint me as a Correspondent of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law for Afghanistan.
I am committed to ensuring Afghanistan is given due consideration in international forums.
Afghanistan war has left many many families with a matriarch.
These matriarchs have to find ways to feed large families.
If women are not allowed to work, how would they survive?
Will Afghanistan be a more ethical place with thousands of hungry children & desperate women?
How do you think Afghans feel when they see a string of int condemnation following TB attack on UNAMA in Herat but near complete silence when TB attack AFG villages/cities?
TB are bad when they attack UN & foreigners but TB are not that bad when they attack AFG villages/cities?
War should be over.
Afghans should seize this opportunity to end the vicious cycle of violence.
Afghans who have a diff vision for Afghanistan should commit to the long game of non-violent pol activism & gradual, bottom-up change.
We should all focus on educating the youth.

We don’t know what’s unfolding in panjsheer but it is likely to be very bloody.
Taliban’s unwillingness to accept any outcome short of unconditional surrender works against those who accuse the resistance of warmongering.
The heavy handed mil approach has stoked ethnic tensions
We are at another Bonn moment.
Bonn excluded d defeated TB & contributed to d disaster that we are seeing today.
If TB chose to exclude anti-TB elements, we may be here again in 20yrs.
Break d cycle.
Inclusive gov requires a neutral interim authority. Not a surrender deal
Tweeting this on the same day when Taliban used live ammunition against women who were peacefully demonstrating for bread, work and freedom.
What you say to the world in English and what your gov does to Afghans don’t match.
Afghans can only feel safe if they are protected not only against criminals & terrorists but also against abuses by the state & those in power. The latter can only be achieved if society is governed by the rule of law.
My new Op-Ed via
@AJEnglish
US needs to release the Dollar shipment for now. If it doesn’t AFN will depreciate further and prices will rise.
Ordinary Afghans will suffer.
Taliban need to form an inclusive gov to secure domestic & int legitimacy ensuring Afghanistan continues to receive foreign aid.
The world media: Afghan gov collapsed bcz of corruption of senior gov officials.
The world media: now let’s listen to the insights of senior gov officials on what happened/is happening in Afghanistan.
🤯
I watched
@ashrafghani
message.
I hold him accountable for destruction of ANSF & making millions of Afghans defenseless against Taliban.
But one thing that was insane, utterly insane,
HE DID NOT APOLOGIZE.
HE DID NOT ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY.
This is outrageous.
Afghanistan can heal if Afghans listen to each other, acknowledge & respect their differences & do what they must to live together peacefully despite their differences.
Dismissing, dehumanizing & trying to dominate the other Afghans is partly what got us here & will destroy us.
Whitewashing of Mullah Omar’s atrocities by some “historians” is wrong and disgusting.
I know he fits your colonial fantasy of Afghans but he caused great destruction of our country and our people.
Shame.
This is CLEARLY photoshopped (but that’s not the point)
- who photoshopped it and why?
- why people with graduate degrees from top unis and high positions are sharing it?
No critical thinking?
Extreme confirmation bias?
Intentionally spreading misinformation?
Taliban paraded the death bodies of alleged kidnappers who were reportedly killed in action in Herat.
Parading death bodies like this is against human dignity.
Even if a person is killed as a result of legitimate use of force, their dignity bfr/post death must be respected.
If you are a foreign nation that is chartering a flight to get your nationals out of 🇦🇫 , you must not take out the dual citizens who were at the very top level of political leadership in 🇦🇫 .
They must stand trial in 🇦🇫 before they get to leave.
That’s the least you could do
How much have Afghan millionaire politicians, who meet in Turkey to come up with plans "to save Afghanistan", donated to help with the humanitarian situation?
I know the answer (zero!) but it is important to note when they show up & when they disappear. The nation remembers!
Why are not we using Darulaman Palace to host the families who fled to Kabul due to war?
We have a huge palace essentially empty while hundreds of Afghan children, women and elderly have to sleep in parks.
@Waheed_Omer
@AmrullahSaleh2
@ashrafghani
@MHaneefAtmar
This is also positive. More needs to be done to convince the worried women of Afghanistan but it is important to acknowledge positive indicators (even if not sufficient).
Afghans helping Afghans should be the motto.
Find ways to get the funds to capable Afghans inside the country.
Don’t repeat the mistake of past 20 years by channeling the funds through highly problematic humanitarian aid industry.
AFG gov failed Afghans when they needed their gov the most.
It no longer can claim to decide for 🇦🇫
We need to call a Loya Jirga in Kabul to decide the future of 🇦🇫
Future of 🇦🇫 must be decided in Kabul, not Doha, not Islamabad, not NY. 🇦🇫 is a home of 30mil ppl
#LoyaJirgaNow
Since 2001, millions of Afghan men & women worked tirelessly in the public & private sectors to make Afghanistan better.
Fruits of their labour are Afghan gains absolutely worth saving.
It’s dishonest, revisionist & wrong to reduce all of that to the crimes of a small group.
Anyone who was against violent resistance bcz they wanted Afghans to live in peace must now support peaceful resistance (even if they disagree with the protesters) & condemn the Taliban for using force against protesters.
Not to do that means u don't think people should be free
Taliban must seek internal legitimacy before they can claim international legitimacy.
A Taliban-only gov, installed by force, one that lacks a basic legal framework & brutally silences any form of dissent cannot claim to represent 🇦🇫 internationally. Nor can it bring stability.
Apparently, if you’re an internationally wanted terrorist you get VIP treatment in Kabul but if you’re an Afghan woman demanding “education, work, and food”, you face gunshots.
Ghani & Moheb, as commander in chief & NSA, reduced Helmand & Kunduz to ruins (among many others), causing so many deaths, but when the fighting got near, “Mohib was terrified” & they both fled.
Treasonous cowards.
Taliban fighters are too quick to shoot. A young doc in Herat & now a young woman in Kabul are murdered.
The public still doesn't know what happened to the perpetrators in either case. Both trial & judgments should be public (as is constitutionally required).
#JusticeForZainab
Prof. Faizullah Jalal, a fierce critic of Taliban, is reportedly arrested from his home in Kabul.
Taliban must respect freedom of speech and the right to dissent.
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable”. JFK
#Free_ProfJalal
Ghani said he was evacuated last minute and he couldn’t change into his shoes.
But the plane he boarded had 52 other passengers.
Basically all the top leadership of the gov.
This shows some preplanning.
Then Ghani must be lying.
افغانستان اینترنشنال به لیست افراد نزدیک اشرف غنی، رییس جمهور برکنار شده افغانستان دست یافته است که یکجا با او از کابل به امارات متحده عربی پناهنده شده اند.
What explains Muslim ummah’s outrage against ban of hijab (& rightly so) but its relative silence on the ban of girls’ education?
We, Muslims, talk a lot about selective outrage of western liberals but Muslims are equally guilty of selective outrage.
I oppose d continuation of war
I oppose sanctions
I oppose making aid conditional
I oppose Taliban social/gender policies
I oppose d Taliban's exclusionary policies & their treatment of dissidents
I support releasing the funds
I support engaging with d Taliban
NO contradiction
@harounrahimi1
You’ve been one of the main megaphones for the Taliban for months now. You played a significant role in obfuscating people’s perceptions and tried to paint a picture that the Taliban were “misunderstood”.
Take accountability for that instead of jumping from position to position.
#AFG
Disturbing display on State Radio Television of Taliban’s Arsenal of suicide vests, car bombs and road side bombs. Lethal weapons for Taliban but they did murder thousands of Afghan civilians including women and children across Afghanistan over the last 20 years.
The UN: Afghanistan is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
The world media: let’s give platform to one of the people responsible for the crisis. Let’s see what he say to say.
Utterly disgraceful.
It is an important reminder that there is NO uniform Afghan experience of the past 20yrs.
Different communities experienced the past 20yes very differently.
Those divergent experiences shaped divergent views of conflict, parties involved, & calculation of cost of peace & war.
I am not sure when the photo was taken but
@hmohib
seems to enjoy his life in the UK.
Afghans in the UK need to find where he lives & publicly shame him.
Afghan lawyers in the UK need to file a lawsuit against him.
He has to face consequences.
This is only half truth.
The other half of the story: Taliban’s refusal to share power with other Afghans led to military takeover of the country which then led to stoppage of vital funds to the Afghan economy.
The spokesperson for Afghanistan's ministry of foreign affairs
@QaharBalkhi
says the humanitarian crisis in the country is one the Taliban has inherited from the previous government "We are doing our best with the circumstances we find ourselves in"
The people who drove the country into the ground now give interviews about how the country was driven into the ground.
It is comical. Tragically comical.
What's it like to be an official who served the Afghan regime that collapsed on August 15?
@aahmady
: "It's unsettling, to say the least."
#GZEROWorld
@gzeromedia
Now all of the sudden everyone is asking for guarantees!!
Billions was being stolen & no one advocated for stopping foreign aid until it was guaranteed that money was going to “needy civilians”.
We don’t have the time to debate this more.
Millions face starvation.
