While it's exciting that in-person book events are returning, I hope that virtual events are still held because virtual events are much more accessible for many. ๐
Hello ๐ I have some professional news!
Today is my first day as an agent with
@belcastr
and I am OPEN to queries! Iโm on the hunt for diverse and inclusive kid lit projects and a few adult genres as well!
You can query me at:
I get queries semi regularly addressed to a different agent or even calling me โHeatherโ instead of โHannah.โ And you know what I do with those queries?
Thoughtfully consider them like I would any query.
The Corvisiero Literary Agency is happy to announce that Hannah VanVels, formerly with HarperCollins Blink, is now a Literary Agent Apprentice at Corvisiero Literary Agency.

I've been with my new agency home for about a month now, and here are some query stats from my first four weeks:
Queries received: 604
Passed: 527
Requested (partial or full): 50
Not responded: 27
Offers of rep: 2

Hi! ๐ I am open to queries again! ๐ I would especially love to see stories from BIPOC authors and queer authors! ๐

Thank you to the
#amquerying
authors who include aesthetics, Pinterest boards, and Spotify playlists when it comes to your queries. They genuinely help me get the vibe and tone of your work!
Just popping in to say that YA fantasy is not dead. It is one of my favorite things to read and rep PARTICULARLY if it's written by POC and/or is queer.
We are not going to kill a genre just as marginalized communities are starting to break into it.
I'm getting married in ๐ฏ days. What's your favorite wedding memory from your own special day or a memorable moment from a wedding you've attended? ๐
Reminder: We are still in a pandemic. It's okay if your focus is still fractured and the words don't come as easily as they did before 2020.
I see you extending grace to every one. Make sure you extend that same grace to yourself. ๐
Metadata details NOT to include in your query:
๐จif it's been professionally editedโthis has zero bearing on my decision to offer rep (and I am a professional editor...)
๐จthat your query is with other agentsโI automatically assume it is, so this is a waste of your word count
Let's talk backstory and starting your novel in just the right place with just the right amount of information.
One of the most common problems I see in opening pages is the dreaded information dump.

Our vet office has COVID restrictions where you drop off your pet, and then you wait in the car during their exam. Got a call from the vet while we were waiting in the parking lot saying that Wulfric is an escape artist and apparently knows how to open their exam room doors. ๐
(a friend who is a literary agent told me that he cannot even get editors to read first novels by young white male writers, no matter how good; they are just not interested. this is heartbreaking for writers who may, in fact, be brilliant, & critical of their own "privilege.")
If you're going to be querying in 2022, protect your mental health. Find a support group. Make goals and resolutions that are within your control and not up to someone else's decision.
โIf we (white/cisgender/heterosexual) donโt write these stories (marginalized voices) then who will?โ As a marginalized person and a writer, this sort of question not only baffles me, but breaks me down. Iโd like to think we, the marginalized voices, will write those stories."
#MSWL
day is a great day to announce that I'm now ACQUIRING MIDDLE GRADE! What's on my
#MG
wishlist? Magical realism! Humor! Adventure! Contemporary fantasy!
I've spent the first week back in the office crafting submission strategies for some truly amazing client works. And for the first time ever, we've left HarperCollins off every sub list.
We will not cross the picket line. Solidarity with
@hcpunion
and our striking colleagues!
Weโre inspired by agents standing with us and holding the picket line ๐ฅน We appreciate all of you so much! If you have time when submitting a project to send a quick email to HC editors you wouldโve included, itโs great to remind them each time theyโre missing out. Examples below
"A โNoโ is sometimes a โNot now.โ"
This is an important mindset to try to keep while you're querying or on submission. I don't have the exact numbers, but I've signed a number of clients on R&Rs or on a new book.
I've also sold a number of clients' books on R&R or a new book.

rejected me after my first requests. In several months I revised extensively and resubmitted to a โyesโ with the same manuscript.

and right now, I feel like anything I say is not enough. Black voices matter more than ever, and though it is not enough, I'm giving away 5 query critiques to Black creators. DM me!

Letโs hear it for the

Stay tuned for

4. Corn Chex
I avoid the pretzels and leave them for the unfortunate person sharing a bag of Chex Mix with me.

Update Hannah VanVels has reached her cap of 100 submissions. This is the fastest an editor has ever capped.

One of my favorite parts about being an agent: Being in the mood to read a certain genre and then selecting a full ms from my query box to read and fall in love with.
#amagenting
I just chose my
#RevPit
winner and runner-up and Iโm ready to burst with excitement. Iโm also scheming to figure out how to go back in time so that I can work on all of these manuscripts and keep just repeating RevPit season for a while until Iโve edited ALL THE STORIES.
Last night I had a dream where I was raving over the phone to a random writer about the sci fi market and how historically marginalized groups are underrepresented in the genre but Andy Weir can write like the same book twice?
So anyway, send me your sci fi.

Good morning,
#amquerying
#amwriting
community!
PitMad may be over. There were almost half a million pitches, which is an overwhelming turnout! Because of that, I know I ๐ฏ missed some things.
Query me anyways!
And as agents, if we are looking for specific things, then that's our responsibility to put those things in an updated, easy-to-find, accessible place for writers to reference rather than expect writers to go digging into the archives for that interview I did back in 2019.
One thing that I'm confused about is how after a peaceful protest in my city, we now have a 7pm curfew but when there was an ARMED protest at the Capitol building in Lansing because people wanted haircuts, no national guard was called in and no curfew instated?
I have cried two times this week. The first time was because Dairy Queen was out of the snickerdoodle blizzard, and the second time was because my partner and I scheduled our first vaccines for Friday.
My partner: whatโs the book youโre reading about?
Me: itโs about sisters.
Partner: oh, that sounds nice!
Me: theyโre dead.
Partner: ....that took a turn.

Been a while since I did a Ye Olde Query Box update!
These are meant to help bring some transparency into the publishing and querying processes, but if these numbers cause you stress, just skip this thread.

A round of applause for the
#RevPit
Board! Not only are they rockstar editors, but they have been working overtime behind the scenes to make this event happen!
You having fun yet,
#RevPit
? Please take a moment to thank the wonderful editors who make this possible. Particularly the board (not me, I'm just comedic relief) who are busting their butts to respond to emails and keep things running smoothly.
One week! One week until
#RevPit
winners are announced! Who is a little stressed yet super excited? ๐ค
Drop a gif that shows how your MC might handle the stress! ๐
Hey
#amquerying
folks! Now that a bunch of Twitter pitch events have finished up recently, I'm gonna put together a blog post on

#amquerying
crowd, what do you like to see on a query form? What information is helpful to you? What do you wish you could include when you pitch your book?
I am so excited and hopeful about a number of projects in my query box at the moment. There must be something in the water because there's just a ton of stories that fit my MSWL so well and are just ๐ค
My iPad and my heart are ready.

DAY! I'm so excited! I'll be popping in sporadically throughout the day! Can't wait to find some awesome stories with some amazing disability rep!
One of my favorite parts about pitch contests (besides reading all the amazing pitches, of course) is when I tell my (non-publishing) partner about all the pitches I liked over dinner, and he just nods along and is like, "cool."
I'm so excited to welcome

to the team! Her beautiful picture books steeped in Filipino culture had me ๐ญ and ๐คฉ
Rachell is truly one in a million, and I am SO excited to work with her on all her beautiful

Absolutely horrified tonight. It's so hard to be safe in publishing & to trust gatekeepers. It's deeply upsetting that gatekeepers like this are out there with these tweets up. I'm sorry writers, I love you & feel for you.
Deleted last post bc screenshots could harm/trigger.
My
#RevPit
submissions all look so amazing! I received about 60% YA, and a pretty even 20%/20% split between adult and MG. Most surprising? Most of you guys are really looking for some tough love!
I'm a little backed up (read: a lot backed up) on submission reading right now, and 11:45pm is a great time to get COMPLETELY ABSORBED.
You all are such great writers. I'm constantly in awe of the talent in my box and always so honored that you've trusted me with your story. ๐
#amquerying
writers! I'll be closing to queries temporarily for the month of August. I have a ton of amazing stuff sitting in my Maybe Pile that I can't wait to dive into!

Was on a professional video call today, and Wulf started barking in the background. I apologized to the person on the call who was super understanding and said, โhe sounds so little! Should you hold him?โ Wulf is a 90-pound German Shepherd who is very high-pitched. ๐
I have finished sending out my
#RevPit
requests.
There were so many amazing submissions, and it was such a privilege to read your stories. I feel so honored that you chose to sub to me.
Please be gentle with literary agents, and please don't take it personally if agents pass with a form letter. Personalized passes take a lot of time, and so many agents are already stretched so thin.

I thought I'd do a lil thread of query stats for April, particularly because I've gotten a lot of follow-up messages from authors asking me to reconsider their rejections/give feedback/ask me to recommend other agents they could query. 1/

๐Hello
#RevPit
followers! ๐I can't wait to get to know you all over the next few weeks! I'm Hannah, and I've been in the biz for over a decade.โ๏ธThis is my third year as a freelance editor (and literary agent!). Before that, I was a Big 5 editor where I acquired kid lit.
Itโs human and we understand that these are form letters going out in bulk. So if youโve done this, donโt sweat it. Happens to the best of us.

Today, I'm pretending to work in a coffee shop. It's me at my dining room table with my laptop and a mugful of cold brew and an ambient coffeeshop music playlist going.
What are some books or book series that got you into reading?
For me, it was the Alanna series by Tamora Pierce, which I remember checking out from the library as a kid randomly and falling in love.
And also Animorphs, which my third grade teacher read aloud to us.
#RevPit
Out of Context Editor Group Chat:
"You say this every year...and we hate you for your decisiveness"
"Just got back from a massage and everything exploded"
"My sheet looks like Bob Ross threw up on it"
"I'm so excited to see [redacted] in my box"
"IS EVERYONE ASLEEP????"
This whole thread is amazing. ๐ฅ Publishing is NOT a meritocracy. A book deal or an offer of rep is not a prize for writing a good book. In trad pub, it comes down to the ~market~ and profit margins. You hit it or you donโt. You might hit it with one book but not another.
BUCKLE UP BISHES...IT'S TIME FOR MAMA TO BURN SOME BRIDGES.
As we all know, when I get upset/angry, the blunt truth pours out, so let's real-talk this current discourse re: age in publishing

If I feel like something is query-ready, I wonโt take it on for
#RevPit
since itโs our goal to help writers get their ms ready for querying. If I donโt choose someone specifically bc I feel it is query-ready, Iโll let people know! Whether they query me is their choice! ๐
