Friends. We already did the work for you. We've looked thoroughly at other states (several counties in each state, in fact!) and looked up the best practices for ballot design. We even wrote the legislation. With illustrated examples! Go for it. Text here:
NEW: A day after a big court hearing on the issue, leaders of the New Jersey Legislature from both parties say they are open to making changes to the state’s controversial primary ballot system.
We won't lie. We love these headlines.
Who would've imagined, when we started this fight?
This is a true victory -- not because of Tammy Murphy or Andy Kim in particular, but because the people's wishes prevailed over the machine's seeming inevitability.
Absolutely. The people did this. And when we say people, we're looking at all you powerful, relentless, selfless women who have been at it for years (and a few men -- we see you too, but let's be honest, this movement was WOMEN POWER at its best!)
We are thrilled to welcome
@Oseguera2020
to our board!! Hector is an Anti-Money Laundering specialist by day & Hudson County’s left wing radical by night. He’s focused on combatting entrenched & corrupt political machines. Together we’ll fight for transparency & good government!
Tonight the Princeton Community Democratic Organization (PCDO), the largest Dem club in NJ, voted overwhelmingly (>90%!) to endorse our
#BetterBallotsNJ
resolution!
Thank you,
@princetondem
!
We look forward to many more Dem and Republican groups signing on to
#AbolishTheLine
LeRoy Jones, we agree that a uniform, readable, easy to use ballot is long overdue. Luckily, we don't need 9 months to research how to make one.
We did the research and published the results 3 years ago:
You can copy this straight to a bill. Our pleasure.
This is a big deal: in a New Jersey Globe Op-Ed, Democratic State Chairman LeRoy Jones, Jr. announces his support for statewide ballot uniformity in primary elections.
Judge Quraishi at the opening of the hearing in the Kim v Hanlon case: When a plaintiff asks for emergency relief the court acts and the court acts fast.
This is beyond wild. Hudson county Dems ran, on the line, actual Republicans, 15 candidates not legally qualified to run, and they all won because... The line. All so progressives would not get onto county committee.
The Dem establishment literally prefers GOP to progressives
/1
In 2019, HCDO didn't run candidates in over a dozen races.
This year, the party was so concerned with fending off progressive challengers, they filled every seat, even if it meant recruiting fake dems.
Don't we deserve a party that activates voters and cultivates real leaders?
Q: Why does NJ have so few women & POC in elected office?
A: The county line primary ballot, which enables the overwhelmingly male & white county party chairs to decide who will be nominated and elected to political office.
Eliminating the line will force candidates to win voters’ support & be accountable to them—not to special interests & party insiders. It will improve trust in the democratic process. If ever there was a time when our democracy needed this boost, it is now.
Attn NJ county clerks: This is how you do your job.
And if you can't do it, we're happy to find someone who can, who will primary you. You'll find your calling elsewhere.
Commisioner Odea and I spoke to the Hudson County Clerk this AM - Junior Maldonado. The clerk informed counsel that Hudson will not be participating in the appeal - it’s a good and important step - Junior said he will allocate the money towards voter education instead of legal
Why even bother voting in NJ? The county line usurps the power of voters. NJ is the only state that organizes its ballots by columns. THIS HAS GOT TO CHANGE. We deserve a real democracy.
It is time for
#BetterBallotsNJ
We've said, in recent days, that this would be like re-starting NJ from scratch. Of course, that was an exaggeration.
But people having parties all across the state? It's almost like celebrating newfound independence.
"We, the voters, declare independence from the machine!"
Party leaders: walk the walk. You say you want to protect democracy? Do it. Right now. You didn't need to wait for a judge. You know that office block ballots are super easy to draw. Many countries had them in vote by mail for years (or even now). Do it.
#AbolishTheLine
@soma_action
sent a letter to Essex County Dem Chair LeRoy Jones to act NOW on fair ballots & a party convention. He's got a lot of power (though unelected). He's not so easy to find though. So we're posting it here.
Please share.
BREAKING!!
6 NJ state legislators came out against the county line ballot! 5 in the state assembly -- Dan Benson, Shavonda Sumter, Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Nicholas Chiaravalloti & Andrew Zwicker, & a 6th one is in the state senate - Shirley Turner. Who's next?
#changeiscoming
NEW: Earlier this week we learned that
@NewJerseyOAG
would withdraw its 2021 filing in the county line lawsuit.
Today, that filing was made by the AG and it reaffirms what we've always known: the county line is unconstitutional.
#AbolishtheLine
Actually, no.
This is why we have corrupt candidates who don't care about voters. This is why we have candidates who can't even run a campaign. This is why we had a Senate Majority leader who lost his seat to a nobody candidate from the other party who ran a $5000 campaign.
This is why we don't have chaos candidates in NJ. A thorough vetting process. The line also helps women and people of color who often lack the money network and resources to be competitive in an open primary.
Indeed. In our presentations we are sometimes asked to bring "both sides" -- Julia Sass Rubin explaining how the line devastates our democracy on one side, and "can you bring an academic who will talk about the benefits of the line as well?"
No. We can't. No one will defend this
On the line - the surprising thing for me isn’t who is attacking the line but rather the surprising thing is who ISN’T defending it publicly. There hasn’t been one county chairperson ANYWHERE go on the record or lawsuit publicly defending the process bc they know it’s wrong
Agree. "The first step is to kill the infamous “line”. That’s the key to boss power, because they can choose who wins the nomination. Then they can tell dependent legislators what bills to support or oppose." But this is not enough. The "boss" culture of
“The county line is not synonymous with the machine, but it is a major factor,” Kim said. “I think that the death blow to the county line has been dealt. I think it’s just a matter of time.”
Once more, for those in the back: Don't be blinded by the Line! Consider all candidates on your ballot.
Want to vote for those who will promote a transparent and accountable county government, and will give you - the voter - more power? check out
these ballots are already in use right now, with the current machinery and under the current laws. No new equipment or certification is needed to use a different layout of the ballot.
Changing the layout would only take about a day max.
Don't know what the Party Line is? Worried that the rallies against the line are "Party infighting," weaken the party, hurt the good people doing the work, etc?
Here's why getting rid of the line will only strengthen NJ's democracy, and both parties.
#TheLineDividesTheParty

More than 50 grassroots reform groups have made ending the party line their top issue. A number of candidates for state and local office have signed pledges to reform the system.
#BetterBallotsNJ
@RebovichInst
Nothing in the first amendment says bracketing has to be displayed on the ballot in a certain way. If it was, we wouldn't be the one and only state with a line. Most states don't have bracketing displayed on the ballot at all.
The ballot is not the place to express alliances.
This is a HUGE deal. Not only will the AG not defend the line, he states that he thinks the county line is indeed unconstitutional! He is basically declaring himself on the side of the plaintiff.
There is literally no excuse to not
#AbolishTheLine
NOW!
Also: as recently as 2017 Mercer had office block ballots for vote by mail. Same
@MercerClerk
. So we know she knows how to do it.
When we talked to her years ago about ballots, she Said she just follows the law. Well, this is the new law.
Not sure why
@MercerClerk
is appealing this, when she’s said multiple times she doesn’t oppose office block ballots on principle and will do what the court decides
She’s a very capable clerk who runs a tight ship. Should be able to put out office block ballots…
#AbolishTheLine
I'm happy to abolish the line, it just can't be done right now."
Good question!
D: Why do they care? Because they are dictated to follow the law, and the law says candidates who choose the same slogan must be put on the same line on the ballot.
Um. No.
Alas.. we're for good gov but don't know the courtroom rules, as it turns out.
And what's worse, I now have to go to my actual day job so can't even take notes.
Y'all know we're all volunteers, right? Support GGCNJ. Help us keep the light on!
Thank you
What can we do? One thing EVERYONE can do is *check who the candidates are* -- read about them, choose wisely, vote for someone who really represents your views.
IGNORE the line. Not everyone on it is bad, but not everyone on it is good. You choose.
Drumroll...
We couldn't be more excited to announce our new board member:
@AratiKreibich
!
Arati brings to
@ggcnj
her enormous capacity to organize and energize, a Bergen county connection, and so much more. And now we have two neuroscientists in our board ;)
Welcome, Arati!!
Judge: Why can't the counties endorse and do whatever they want, just stay away from the ballot?
Boom.
Judge: So how do you explain away ballot Siberia?
T: it can't happen in a Senate race.
The “line” on New Jersey’s primary ballots shields elected officials from any semblance of accountability.
That’s because our ballot design allows party insiders, not voters, to pick election winners.
From this morning’s
@PoliticoNJ
Playbook:
All the remaining Dem US Senate candidates have publicly asked for an office block for the Senate race, signing on to
@fairballotnj
's petition. Will the county chairs go against their request & force Kim to associate with candidates on line? Is that legal?
Some NJ counties are considering canceling county committee elections this June (keeping the same committee in place for one more year).
This is a dangerous slippery slope and defies the basic tenets of a democracy!
Do not cancel our elections! /1
"When someone is claiming there is a fire, we don't Wait for the house to burn down. They are claiming irreparable harm -- we don't Wait for the harm to happen."
When our democracy in NJ is whittled down to an editorial board begging a congressman to just stop. Have we reached rock bottom yet? Is it time to

It is one thing to defend yourself with taxpayer money -- they did not instigate that.
A whole other cynical abuse of taxpayer money to try to disenfranchise voters on our dime. Stop it.
You get a salary for drawing ballots. Do your jobs.
If you read *one article* about the party line and why it is the enemy of democracy -- and taxpayer dollars -- in NJ, read this excellent piece by

Opening remarks from Flavio Komuves: The design of the primary ballots in NJ is a national anomaly and an embarrassment.
Judge asks about timing: is it too late to make this ruling for the 2024 primary election? Flavio presents a slide of an office block ballot, reminding that
It is time to be loud about what it will take for women to run and win on their own terms. And we all know power concedes nothing without a demand.
Our demand must start with fair and competitive primary elections where voters can choose who is better qualified to serve. /1
Mercer county's Dem convention last Thursday was historical, laying the blueprint for the beginning of a county-committee-driven movement to restoring democracy in NJ.
#betterballotsnj
Ballot design is important! And the NYTimes hasn't even seen the horror that is the NJ primary ballot!
It's super easy to fix. And will help all voters.
We're all in for
#BetterBallotsNJ
. You on board?
"Anything that loosens the grip of the machines on the state’s politics is a step forward. The failed Murphy campaign has exposed the general public to just how the sausage is made and it’s just as gross as we all thought it was."
Fair elections with wide participation are the bedrock of democracy. Yet, NJ’s primary ballots are intentionally confusing, causing voter disenfranchisement through gerrymandering of the ballot.
We deserve better ballots!
Register for our kickoff here:
Candidates
@RepAndyKimNJ
,
@DrCamposMedina
, and
@LawrenceHamm7
today sent a letter to the state’s county clerks in New Jersey asking them to eliminate the advantages of organization lines and instead use an office block ballot design in the June 4 primary election.
Hell yeah!
Three Democratic U.S. Senate candidates --
@AndyKimNJ
@DrCamposMedina
@HammForSenate
-- are asking county clerks to use an office block ballot design in the June primary instead of organization lines.
NJ is the ONLY state with a "party line" *within* the party primary election. This is the party not trusting its own members to elect their candidates, but rather heavy-handedly tipping the scale for the machine and against rank and file members. Who do YOU want to represent you?
What does a good ballot look like? It is simple: there are only two rules -- that New Jersey ballots violate purposefully, in order to manipulate and confuse voters. This is gerrymandering of the ballot. We've had enough.
It is time for
#BetterBallotsNJ
"Bravo. It’s time somebody did that, because the ballot used in 19 of New Jersey’s 21 counties is not democracy. It is a mechanism that has been rigged to protect the machine’s candidate."
Democracy requires
#BetterBallotsNJ
. We deserve better ballots!
“Today’s decision is a victory for a fairer, more democratic politics in NJ” Kim said “It’s a victory built from the incredible grassroots work of activists who saw an undemocratic system marginalizing the voices of voters and worked tirelessly to fix it.”
And while we are making Mother's Day requests: Can we have some democracy please?
Hint: It is NOT a democratic election when there is only one option to choose. /1
Votes in New Jersey may not be actively suppressed, with classic measures like literacy tests or poll taxes, but they are devalued to a vanishing point by.. The county line.
As per former NJ AG (R) and former Public Advocate (D).
We deserve Better Ballots!
Singleton tells reporters: “I think it's opportune for us to lead as Democrats with this idea that we do not need the organizational lines to ensure that we have the best candidate."
Says he has had an "evolution of thought" on this, not caused by Sen or CD3 race.
NJ Legislature votes to extend Norcross family welfare legislation, AKA NJ corporate tax credits. Zwicker only Assembly Dem/ Codey & Sacco only Senate Dems brave enough to vote no. A few others abstained. Rest fear machine retribution. Could our legislature be any more broken?

A slide shows "New Jersey ballot" versus "Normal ballot".
ballot for the Senate race.
Judge: are you saying you didn't know about this at all and this is the first time you have heard about the line? I'm not going to give you 3 months to find expert witnesses. If you had experts that could talk to the issue, you should have them by now
Support for Abolishing the Line is is broad and deep.
Big shout of to all of the orgs behind this, including the
@PDofNJ
and members of their legal defense fund who helped get this lawsuit off the ground.
“I find it deeply unrepresentative and unfair to have one single person be able to solely decide who is the endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate for a county with over 240,000 registered democrats”
Not just unrepresentative. Deeply undemocratic. Ironic it's the Democratic party.
Extreme overreach results in extreme backlash. All these politicos feigning innocence ("we never used the line to push anything but the best candidates"). Quick refresher: Tanzie Youngblood versus Jeff van Drew. Yeah, the one that went MAGA post election.
With all the election frenzy we forgot to announce.. drumroll....
We're THRILLED that

Voting in the primary election? Don't forget to look beyond the line! Vote for who YOU want, not who THEY want.
(True, most positions aren't contested..
1. Do your homework for every contested position - that's where you get real democracy!
2. you can always write someone in :)
Primary ballots in NJ are organized such that some candidates, those on The Line, have a 40 point (!!!) advantage over opponents.
Basically, if you are on The Line, you win.
Otherwise, you don't stand a chance.
COVID-19 is awful. But it is NOT an excuse to throw democracy out the window. Today we sent this email to Middlesex County Committee people, in regards to the Chair's proposed by-laws change that will extend the term of sitting county committee and its leadership to 4 years:

Assemblyman Benson is leading the way by saying loud and clear: it is time for
#BetterBallotsNJ
with an office bloc design!
Find out more about him here
Thank you,
@AndyKimNJ
, for helping bring this first win to the finish line, and for your commitment to continue the work and truly restore New Jersey's democracy. It starts from home.
There is still more we need to do to secure permanent fixes, and all of us are committed to following this through. But I wanted to take a moment to thank these three incredible lawyers. All of NJ thanks you.

Defense suggests that a change now would really confuse voters. Judge contests that an office block ballot will be more confusing.
"How come they aren't telling me who to who to vote for? They always do!" (jk, this is not part of the case, these are whispers in the gallery)
Abolishing the line is not a partisan issue. Everyone in NJ (yeah, except for a few powerful party brokers, *but there are more of us than them*) wants to live in a true democracy.
We deserve

#TakeBackNJ
Your Freeholders? They control the purse strings for a huge county-level budget, and can suddenly decide to buy an armored vehicle instead of teaching de-escalation techniques
Making NJ a real democracy -- what needs to happen next:
To preempt a decision in Conforti, NJ's legislative leadership may try to adopt a version of an office block ballot that would enable the political machines to continue controlling who gets elected
County clerks as a hub for civic information & engagement is a vision we stand behind!
It should already be reality, but isnt. Despite the law requiring petitions to run for office to include an email to facilitate voters contacting candidates, few clerks make that info public😤
Judge is back to the expedited schedule: there is nothing unusual about this. Not only in this particular case. So any implication that the schedule the judge ordered is unique is without merit. But because we're moving quickly does not mean the case has been decided.
So do your homework. The line infantilizes voters. It assumes you can't actually choose for yourself. Yes, you can. You don't need a party boss telling you who to vote for.
Finally: this all happens in the PRIMARY elections. Because of gerrymandering, in most districts the general elections are a foretold conclusion. Your vote REALLY MATTERS in the primary.
Don't vote for another Van Drew.
Van Drew is a great example of what that buys us: representatives that do not represent us.
They represent their (party) bosses.
The party machine OWNS van Drew's betrayal.
But they used all of us to get the job done.
Loving that most candidates for US Senate in NJ agree that voters deserve a fair election without the line tipping the scale. It's not that we are for one candidate or another - the point is, with a fair ballot, all that matters is who voters are for. And we're here for that!
Fact check: we can get rid of the county line right now. No waiting needed.
Andy Kim knows this and is fighting to give NJ voters the fair and democratic ballot they deserve.
Tammy Murphy said she was for a fair ballot, and she needs to uphold this promise.
