Nothing says 'Welcome to Belfast' better than the stain-ridden carpet of Belfast International Airport. Apart from maybe the Soviet-style arrivals corridor (despite the fact we didn't have a Soviet era) or the security overkill.
Ever wondered how Sammy the Seal manages to get upstream in the River Lagan? Here's your answer β check out this feat of flippering at Stranmillis Weir beside the new bridge! ππ¦
This is what we should be doing in Belfast instead of tearing down modest but characterful buildings in the name of 'progress'.
It's not just the Ulster Halls or Lanyon Buildings that deserve preservation and restoration.
Before or after?
Superb restoration by
@dubcivictrust
of terraced house at
#18OrmondQuayUpper
.
Not just conserved but also returned to its original 1843 appearance. π
Disgusted that the bilingual street sign on Haypark Avenue has been vandalised β again. This time broken into pieces. Imagine the effort that went into doing this by someone just because they have no respect for their neighbours or their community.

Council has agreed to my proposal to write to the Department of Foreign Affairs asking that locations from this part of the island be included in the next Irish passport. The current one only features scenes from the Republic, so it's important to showcase the north-east too.
If you're thinking of coming down to the Holyland, Lower Ormeau or Wider University Area to party on St Patrick's Day, ππ’π‘'π§. Stay down home, spend some time with your family, and tell your friends to do the same.
You should hear a pin drop on Agincourt Avenue on Tuesday.
Just witnessed a wheelchair user having to go out onto the main Ormeau Road as their route to the pavement was blocked.
It might just be two minutes to grab a coffee or whatever for you, but it could mean inconvenience or danger for someone with a disability or pushing a pram β οΈ
Grafton Street. No cars. It's not exactly struggling. It's time to bring Belfast city centre into the 21st century and make it work for residents, visitors and the environment.
Disgusted that the sculpture by Daniela Balmaverde has been stolen from outside Ormeau Road Library. This artwork is a wonderful feature of the area and is cherished by the local community. It's beyond belief that anyone would do this. I hope it's recovered and returned soon.
I had to do a 'disgruntled councillor points at pothole' shot at some point during my term of office, but this one on the Ormeau Road really justifies it! π²
The Department for Infrastructure has been made aware. Take care if you're travelling up the inside lane β οΈ
*BELFAST BIKES RECORD*
March was the biggest month on record for Belfast Bikes, with nearly 29,000 rentals (7,000 more than the next biggest month).
I've noticed lots of people using them recently, and look forward to even bigger numbers as more people choose active travelπΆββοΈπ²
Disappointed that the Tribeca plans were passed tonight. I think we all want the best for the city centre β the question is about what constitutes the best.
My view is that there are too many downsides, including loss of Writers' Square space and impact on St Anne's Cathedral.
I found nearly 80,000 Metro journeys were late, cancelled or didn't reach their destination over the past year.
Thousands of people across Belfast rely on buses to get around the city every day. We need this service to be punctual and dependable.
Delighted my motion to protect Belfast's historic street signs has been passed.
I have real concern about the absence of any proper protections to ensure their upkeep, which could put at direct threat this significant part of Belfastβs history and sense of identity.
***BELFAST BIKES BREAKING NEWS***
The installation of the new
@BelfastBikes
docking station on the Ormeau Road opposite The Vineyard is due to start this week.
It'll be up and running ASAP, all being well.
Its sister station at Ormeau Park is now the most popular in the city.
Thank you so much to every single person who voted for me (all 1,881 of you!) and to my brilliant team on this campaign.
We managed to increase our vote in Botanic by nearly 90%, and I'm forever indebted to everyone who has put their trust in me. I'll try my best to deliver.
This week we will propose that council looks at a new alleygating programme that supports residents who have transformed their alleys into community spaces.
Coronavirus has forced us all to rethink how we live, so it is essential we support people who are leading the recovery.
Shocked at Britain First bile being distributed today in South Belfast. The Botanic district is one of the most diverse and integrated on the island of Ireland, so let me be quite clear: regardless of your colour, creed or nationality, you are welcome in our community.
Some idiot chopped down a street tree in the dead of the night on the Ormeau Road? Why would anyone do this? We've reported it to the council and asked that it's removed and replaced. Anyone with any information should contact the police.
This is uncool β graffiti ruining the artwork on the new bridge in Stranmillis had appeared.
I struggle to understand the 'look at me' attention-seeking of those who deface community assets like this.
It's not big and it's not clever.
The new artwork by Alana McDowell on the side of
@vineyardltd
is phenomenal!
So much local detail, an Ormeau Road black street sign in the centre, and beautifully bright and colourful. I love it π
The more art like this we see in Belfast, the better, and I'll be supporting it.
My motion for legal art walls in Belfast has been passed by council. This will support a new generation of street artists by providing a safe space for them to develop their creative skills and receive mentoring, while also hopefully reducing nuisance graffiti such as tagging.
This was a dark night in Belfast City Hall where, behind closed doors and out of view, discussions took place about slashing funding that was earmarked for an organisation that provides immeasurable support for kids with special needs and their families. Is this the city we want?
Disgusted that the sculpture by Daniela Balmaverde has been stolen from outside Ormeau Road Library. This artwork is a wonderful feature of the area and is cherished by the local community. It's beyond belief that anyone would do this. I hope it's recovered and returned soon.
*Havelock House Development Refused*
I voted against plans to demolish Havelock House on the Ormeau Road and replace with it a 270-apartment residential complex with a maximum height of eight storeys.
Proposed developments need to fit in with surrounding communities.
I've brought a motion to Belfast City Council calling for 'transparency by default' to help reduce the number of issues that are discussed behind closed doors.
It's really important that residents get to see how and why decisions are made, and that this is done openly.
Sad to see the built heritage of Newry crumbling today.
We deride the appalling decisions made in the sixties and seventies to pull down historic buildings, yet seem oblivious to the fact that we still do it today.
Why not renew instead of remove?
Disappointed that the bilingual street sign on Haypark Avenue has been vandalised. This achieves nothing and shows a lack of respect for things that matter to people. I've asked the council to repair it as soon as possible.
Delighted to support the motion at Council tonight calling for a ban on puppy farms, brought by
@AntoFlynnser
.
My own wee dog Arthur turns 10 this month, and I want other dog owners to be able to have a happy, healthy pet free from the cruelty caused by this industry.
#LucysLaw
Absolutely love the new mural in the Holylands π
Well done to
@SouthBelfastPB
,
@QUBelfast
and the local community for delivering this, and to
@emicartist
for creating a beautiful artwork for our city, complementing the brilliant community efforts to transform this little spot.
*CHERRYVALE CROSSING DELIVERED*
I'm delighted to confirm that a crossing will be put on the Ravenhill Road at Cherryvale by
@deptinfra
. This is something we've been campaigning hard for, and is a key issue for the community. This will help make the area safer for everyone.
Delighted to join Infrastructure Minister
@NicholaMallon
and
@MatthewOToole2
at the launch of the new parklet in Linenhall Street, which looks fantastic. This is the type of transformation that is changing the face of our city and making it more liveable.
Fantastic day down at Open Botanic. Really good turnout and great activities on offer. Communities across Belfast need to be empowered to replicate this, using public spaces for public good β good for people, good for business and good for the environment. Well done π
Down in the Holyland joining patrols. Reasonably quiet at the minute. Police, council, universities, parking enforcement and other agencies in the area. Pubs and off licences closed.
Sorted! The new sign with the correct spelling has been installed at zero cost to the ratepayer.
@SeamasBelfast
and I have secured assurances that a fail-safe will be built into the process moving forward to help prevent this happening elsewhere.
Really excited that Planning Committee has approved a transformative project for the length of Adelaide Street to provide seating, planters and artwork, making the area much more vibrant and friendly for residents, workers and visitors while complementing the area's heritage.
Yet another crash at the junction beside Ormeau Library at the weekend. I hope everyone is ok. This location needs safety improvements, in particular a right-turn filter light for vehicles and bikes turning up the road. I've raised this before with DfI, and have written again β οΈ
This is crazy. It's clearly unacceptable to expect someone to stand for a two-hour journey on a 'premium' cross-border service. Young families would've been on this train. Ticket sales should reflect genuine capacity. I'll be writing to Translink about the need to address this.
Turned up 20 mins early for
@Translink_NI
train to Dublin and itβs over sold. Booked 4 tickets a month ago, they said did you book a reserved seat? I said no I booked a ticket she said βa ticket is just a ticketβ what? Thatβs what a ticket is!!
The scale of dumping in the Holyland is at industrial levels, risking health, destroying the area and impacting on residents.
Workers clear the mess and do a great job β¬οΈ but we need targeted enforcement to identify those responsible. It's the only way to tackle this properly.
I had to do a 'disgruntled councillor points at pothole' shot at some point during my term of office, but this one on the Ormeau Road really justifies it! π²
The Department for Infrastructure has been made aware. Take care if you're travelling up the inside lane β οΈ
No need to cherry pick β the Good Friday Agreement confirms the right of people from this part of the island to hold Irish citizenship.
This is about having that right reflected in its most visible manifestation β the passport.
As part of my commitment to push for better green infrastructure in Belfast, I've worked on proposals to deliver secure bike parking across the city. I'm delighted to see this start to come to fruition with the new Bike Yard in
@CastleCourt
providing secure well-let parking π²
Delighted to get confirmation from Translink that 'Nightmover' late night buses will operate at weekends in Belfast over the festive period.
Belfast SDLP is pushing for it to be year-round to get people home safe and support the night-time economy, but it needs real investment.
Belfast, 2022.
Is it any wonder people feel disenfranchised by our planning system when it allows this type of monstrosity to be built right above someone's back garden?
I welcome tonight's Planning Committee decision to refuse plans for a 14 storey office development on the edge of the Market.
Everyone would like to see the site come into productive use, but this must be done in a way which works for the local community.
Getting the word out about

My motion to maximise transparency in Belfast City Council has been passed. It's really important that the public and journalists get to see how and why decisions are being made. Too often things are being done behind closed doors. Openness is essential for our democracy.
Pleased to speak in favour of tonight's council motion calling for an end to hunting with dogs.
It's cruel, abhorrent and disgusting, and needs banned without any further delay.
I'm working on a motion to Council tonight with
@AineGroogan
to highlight the importance of Writers' Square as a social and cultural hub in our city β a place to protest, celebrate and congregate β beside the beautiful and historic St Anne's Cathedral, which must be protected.
Great to see so many people down at the bandstand in Ormeau Park to get a free tree for Belfast One Million Trees. There's still time to call by β the team will be here until 3pm.
Very worrying damage to one of the pillars at MacNeice House on the Malone Road, Belfast. A listed building. Currently the Chinese Consulate. No planning permission.
This is why the government needs to intervene. First the hedge goes, then built heritage crumbles. What next?
Back on the ground! Out this morning with South Belfast reps updating residents about our upcoming public meeting on traffic, congestions and road safety.
A baptism of rain for
@MatthewOToole2
! π§οΈ
Got "Sieg Heil" shouted at us in the street today after
@SeamasBelfast
called out an idiot for aiming a Nazi salute at a woman from an ethnic minority, which we've reported to police. There's no place for racism or hatred in our city and we all have a responsibility to combat it.
The SDLP in Belfast City Council will continue to support the proposed Β£800,000 funding for SΓ³lΓ‘s. This is a phenomenal organisation which delivers essential support for lots of kids and families with a range of needs. To slash their funding allocation like this is sickening.
π΄ββοΈNEW POP-UP CYCLE LANESπ΄
There'll be a new pop-up cycle lane on the Dublin Road.
It'll link to Alfred St via Bankmore St. Plans to connect to City Hospital.
There'll also be one on the Grosvenor Road to the Royal.
This is fantastic, helping build our green infrastructure.
Fantastic that
@NicholaMallon
is widening the footpaths on the Dublin Road, Linenhall St, GVS, and Bedford St.
These areas have high footfall, so now more than ever we need the space for people to walk safely with social distance.
Watch this space β pop-up cycles lanes next!
Council has agreed to my proposal to write to the Executive requesting proper regulation of AirBnBs and other short-term lets to protect communities and visitors to our city. I brought a motion on this during the last term, and with the Executive now back, it's time for action.
Things generally looking ok around the Holylands and Lower Ormeau Road at the minute. Reassuring to see the multi-agency presence on the ground keeping an eye on things and available to offer support to anyone if they need it.
I'm delighted that the new playground in Ormeau Park will be disability-friendly with wheelchair-accessible swing, roundabout and multi-unit. This will make it welcoming for the entire community and ready for the future. This is something we've been working on, so great to see.
Good to see
@PSNIBelfastS
doing speed patrols in Ballynafeigh after
@SeamasBelfast
and I requested increased monitoring on the Ormeau Road and Ravenhill Road.
Residents have expressed concern at both being used like racetracks, particularly with more pedestrians and cyclists out
***ORMEAU BELFAST BIKES SUCCESS***
I'm delighted that latest figures show that the Belfast Bikes station at Ormeau Park is now the second busiest in the entire city.
This justifies looking at other stations across the Botanic district, including on the Malone and Lisburn Roads.
Old business name painted on a gable wall on Artana Street/ Ormeau Road, revealed by a billboard being removed after many years.
Wright & Son Painters & Decorators.
Great to see the 20mph signs going in along the Ravenhill Road ahead of the new school year β just a few more to be installed and it's good to go.
We requested this stretch be included in
@NicholaMallon
's programme to create safer roads around schools, and now it's happening!
Another decision made behind closed doors tonight at Belfast City Council β this time a proposal to put gates on Crescent Park.
Spoiler: it was approved.
Decisions that affect the fabric of our city such as parks should be taken in public so people can see how they were reached
Donβt forget South Belfast School Uniform Swap Shop is taking place today at Ballynafeigh Methodist on the Ormeau Road! You can use the side gate and door on Florenceville Drive. Weβre here until 3pm!
@SeamasBelfast
@OpenOrmeau

@PaulDoherty___
South Belfast
@SDLPlive
reps and
@Paul_Mc_Cusker
met Belfast Multicultural Association today.
Their home in Donegall Pass has been decimated by arson, but they continue to do important work in the community.
It has been fantastic to see so many people rally round in support π
*CHERRYVALE UPDATE*
I've had confirmation that a new survey will be carried out to examine the potential for a pedestrian crossing at Cherryvale.
With the redevelopment of the playing fields and increased footfall, this is essential for a true assessment of risk to pedestrians.
I'm delighted to have secured funding for a mobile Speed Indicator Device for South Belfast.
This unit will help alert drivers to remain within the speed limit, making our roads safer for everyone in the area.
Thanks to
@AineGroogan
for supporting and
@BelfastPcsp
for funding.
Here it is folks β the 20mph school speed limit on the Ravenhill Road is now live after we requested it for this busy spot.
Over 200 schools will ultimately benefit from the roll-out of the scheme by
@NicholaMallon
after a further announcement today of a new range of locationsπΈ
*Ormeau Lakes*
I've cross-referenced historical and modern maps and it turns out that there were actually two lakes in Ormeau Park at one time, in these locations close to the current Ozone and BMX track.
The smaller of the two seems to have been filled in first.
*South Belfast Pre-Loved School Uniform Swap Shop*
Delighted to be working with
@Foodstock__
, Open Ormeau, Ballynafeigh Methodist Church and
@bcda1974
to help local families get ready for the new school year.
Drop-offs Weds, Thurs and Fri, and collection event this Saturday!
Signed, sealed and delivered β nomination forms submitted for next month's council election!

Unwelcome graffiti on Ravenhill Road outside Cherryvale. A lick of WD-40 removed the worst of it.
Looking forward to the 20mph speed limit outside nearby schools going live shortly, thanks to
@NicholaMallon
.
@SeamasBelfast
and I working to secure further safety measures here πΈ
Thanks to council workers for clearing the remaining leaves on the Park Road cycle lane today β I know a lot of people were concerned about the risk to users.
DfI own the cycle lane. DfI own the trees. DfI won't pay for the clearance and leave it to council and residents to fix.
Took a dander down the magical Rushfield/ Deramore Avenue entry, which has been beautifully transformed for the festive season by

Residents here have been at the heart of the

Thanks to everyone in Team Botanic who pounded the streets, knocked the doors, and engaged with thousands of people across the area. I'm forever indebted.
It's over to the voters now, and I hope they put their trust in us again to deliver for this diverse and vibrant community.

@belfastcc

I've never been so proud of the young people of this city than when I joined them outside City Hall for the

Great view along the towpath while taking a spin on
@BelfastBikes
.
If only there were a way to connect the lower Ormeau and Gasworks directly to Ormeau Park to open up our city even more and make our green spaces more accessible. I dunno, a bridge maybe...
The new play equipment in Castle Espie. Wouldn't it be great to see more facilities like this in parks and public spaces around Belfast, using sustainable kit that doesn't jar with the natural environment? This is something I've raised with officers.
*NEW ORMEAU ROAD CROSSING*
I'm delighted that
@NicholaMallon
has announced a new pedestrian crossing on the Lower Ormeau Road beside Farnham Street.
This is something that the SDLP has been calling for on behalf of the local community, so it's fantastic to see it delivered.
Standing room only as over 100 people join us to discuss traffic, congestion and road safety in South Belfast. Thanks to everyone for joining us and to the panel for their active participation π΄πΆπΈ
Tonight the SDLP voted to reject the rates increase in Belfast. There are ways the rate burden could've been reduced which haven't been fully pursued, so we couldn't vote in all conscience to hike rates by nearly 8% during a cost of living crisis.
People regularly contact me about graffiti, so I have proposed a game-changing council service for residents and staff to report it in to, with agreements to be made with utility providers requiring them to remove tagging and graffiti from their property as a matter of urgency.
Great to be out with fantastic residents just off the Lisburn Road today clearing up an entry. It's community-driven activism like this which is transforming our neighbourhoods for the better π
Imagine if we had alley gates in all of Ballynafeigh β we could have little pockets of heaven across the neighbourhood.
With things on ice over coronavirus, some residents have gone ahead and started to reclaim their alleys anyway β hopefully this will spread like wildflowers!π»
Pleased
@PoliceServiceNI
have agreed to mount speed enforcement on the Ormeau Road and Ravenhill Road.
Members of the community raised concerns with
@SeamasBelfast
and me about drivers using them like racetracks β particularly worrying as more people are out walking and cycling.
Great to see the pedestrian and cycle crossing going in which will link with the new bridge from the Lower Ormeau/ Gasworks to Ormeau Park, across the Lagan.
This is phase 1, and secures planning for the next steps to progress π²πΆββοΈπ³
