The immediate effects are that you‘ll become aware of your unconscious social media habits: opening Instagram while waiting for the bus, just because you’re bored. This is often not an aware decision. And taking a deep breath helps you to reflect on yourself in that moment.

When opening social media apps, the “one sec” Shortcuts Automation is triggered, and guides you to take a deep breath instead of showing the app you intended to open. Afterwards you can decide with a clear mind if you really want to proceed to the app.

The setup works through Apple’s Shortcuts app, which comes pre-installed on your iPhone. Go to the Automations tab, and select an “Open App” Automation, add the “one sec” shortcut, and disable “ask before running”. That’s it. Here’s the app:

Long term, “one sec” increases the effort of opening a particular app. This makes it less likely that you open an app just like that. If it ain’t worth one deep breath, you won’t need to open that app anyway.

Complete a Duolingo exercise before you can start scrolling on social media. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck reaching someone at @duolingo so far. I believe it would be a powerful intervention feature for @one_sec_app .

Someone please build @one_sec_app , but for learning mandarin 🙏 - Every time I open an app of my choice, ask me a question like "Select the correct character for wǒ". - Repeat questions I get wrong. - Make the questions get progressively harder.

@GenoEug nope that’s a real effect. by adding additional friction the "dopamine-on-demand" effect from social media is removed and your brain is re-balanced. we gonna publish a scientific study soon, statistically significant reduction is 36%
