My freckled, redhead of a dad grew up in poverty and abuse in West Philly. He fought bigotry against his bi-racial sister, stared down the KKK to register black voters, served his country during the Cold War and died of cancer at 43. He never complained. That is a heroic life.

In 1981, my father was dying of cancer. We knew it would be his last Christmas. My mother kept the tree fresh. In January, it was still green. So she put hearts on it in February. Shamrocks in March. Then Easter eggs. He died in May. That tree was still alive. My lights stay on.

I joined Twitter 4 years ago today. Was fired by @PhillyInquirer because of it. Was blocked by many, including Brian Stelter from @ReliableSources . Gained 2000 followers overnight when I was silenced by the newspaper. Have posted selfies and lizard and dog pics. Made friends. ❤️
