We lost our mum last night. Eileen at 92. Widowed at 42 with 6 children, youngest just 5. With love and determination she got us through those traumatic times. A stay at home mum until then she forged a career and ran businesses. A great lover of and beloved by all small children
Gemma O’Doherty and John Waters to face a bill of between €50,000 and €75,000 in legal costs following their failed judicial review case. Reporting shortly on

So renovating an old shed on the farm in W Cork and found this - it’s gelignite - lots of it. Bomb squad have arrived. Earlier tweet with pic of DF personnel deleted at DF request. It’s War of independence era
In a bit of personal news. After nearly three decades reporting for RTE Radio I have decided to leave RTE to pursue other interests. It’s been an honour to tell people’s stories 1/3
Pete Reed was one of the greatest human beings I ever met. Killed yesterday by Putin while evacuating civilians in an ambulance in Ukraine. Here he is on the left saving lives again in Mosul
How is Eimer Cusack still employed by

on €200,000 a year???? She signed off on what turned out to be a fake redundancy for her “peer” for €450k and never mentioned it to anyone. At the same time

Human Resources treated young employees appallingly
3/3 That weight was the vile, vicious, poisonous campaign being run against him week after week in the Sunday Independent. No explanation ever given by them
For all those claiming that there are floods of UK cars arriving off ferries- including so called
@academics
and medics - this IS NOT TRUE. I went to the trouble of checking it.
I went to Dublin and Rosslare ports yesterday to check number of UK cars off ferries. Only 4 cars per ferry, 99% trucks. Cars I spoke to were Irish people living in UK not strictly tourists

You and Ciaran Cuffe were the only two Green MEP’s in Europe to abstain on a recent EU Parliament vote condemning Russian aggression. What is actually WRONG with you? Asking for 50,000 Irish voters
In line with our policy of neutrality, Irish funds will not be used for weapons.
Instead, Ireland will provide funding to a specific stream within the peace facility for the purchase of non-lethal equipment to Ukrainian military.

I don’t believe that our pathway to a just and free society lies in electoral politics.
I have seen how brilliant and brave people are bullied and silenced within parties that profess to be grounded in equality and democracy.
I’ve seen how much effort and energy gets taken up 4/
Gemma O’Doherty and John Waters face a legal bill of at least €100,000 and probably more after today being ordered to pay the State’s costs by the High Court
John Pilger was one of my biggest influences when starting journalism. Unfortunately in my dealings with him while in RTÉ he was dismissive, insulting, rude and obnoxious. Gave him the benefit of the doubt the first 2 times but after the third odious encounter I learned my lesson
After nearly 40 years in journalism reporting from all over the world I can say we only exist because people talk to us in the face of intolerance and intimidation. Only sadness leaving is that the Seascapes programme will come to an end for now. 3/3
It’s clear from the Grant Thornton report into the
#RTE
toy show fiasco that Moyà Doherty was a prime mover in deceiving the board on the issue. She also hired Dee Forbes. She is refusing to attend today’s hearing.
I was at Dublin and Rosslare ports for
@drivetimerte
. Only 4 cars per ferry arriving from UK. 99% trucks. In Dublin cars seemed to be from NI. In Rosslare spoke to cars and they were Irish returning home. No influx fro UK
Say Happy 21st birthday to

Shane Keane. Theoretical Physicist, All Ireland champion cricketer, long jumper and sprinter. Not the celebration we had planned. Will rock it after lockdown
@niallmurray1
Seems the factory which made it closed around 1920. You can just make out makers name on one pic. We think it was hidden by Denis Dinny O’ Neill and his comrades around then. He emigrated to the US in the mid 20’s and it was forgotten about. Found 180 sticks in total
The
#roseoftralee
is a national embarrassment. Misogyny, patronising, paddywhackery. Should be consigned to the dustbin of history along with Magdalen Laundries. No place on our national TV
1/2 I worked for many years alongside Charlie Bird and he always got the story. He was always kind to new journalists starting out but his biggest achievement in life was how he dealt with his terrible illness.
@DavidMcredmond

What amazes me are the so called academics, medics and others putting these completely untrue statements about an influx about. Thanks
That includes being a part time farmer, part time sailor and part time content provider and writer for hire. A bit early for me but the draw of other adventures is strong 2/2
I was at a Fianna Fáil election press conference in 2007 when Mícheál Martin told us that waiting lists

No Taoiseach in modern times has taken office invested with as much hope and optimism as
#leovaradkar
. Unfortunately he squandered that v quickly mostly through narcissism. FG have wanted him out for last 2 years.
Joan Burton, Ruth Coppinger, Mary Mitchell, Regina Doherty, and possibly Jan O’Sullivan and possibly Kate O’Connell. Lots of women losing seats. What’s going on?
Not only is Moyà Doherty not going to appear, she is listed as “no response” in Committee docs. That’s what she thinks of the tax and license fee payer

Sinn Fein topping the poll in Cork Sth Central with quarter of boxes tallied. Ó Laoghaire on 24%, FF leader Ml Martin on 20%, but Ml McGrath of FF on 12%. Coveney on 17%

When I applied for accreditation for the RNV in Jan I got on Trump’s mail list. Does this my “last warning” mean no more email or is he about to Arrive at my door
The right wing violence at Leinster House yesterday is a direct result of the light handed approach the Garda and authorities have adopted to earlier intimidation and violence elsewhere
2/2 I climbed Croke Patrick with Charlie Bird two years ago and it was the most uplifting day we had in years. Thousands of decent people turned out to support his great courage. Sympathy to Claire and his two daughters
Really sad this afternoon to learn of the death of journalist Gerry O'Hare - a man who was loved by all. Sincere sympathies to his wife Anne Cadwallader
Now that
@arusbridger
has resigned from the Future of Media Commission it's time to look again at the membership of this group. NOT ONE working journalist I know has any faith in the membership. They unanimously backed him to stay just a week ago.
Ah. 5 years ago today on one of many panels over I’ve shared over the years with the late Noel Whelan. I can’t recall the topic now but I can guarantee it was a lively & informative discussion, it always was with Noel.
And yes, I looked ‘different’ back then.
“He left the little that he had
To build a house for the fools and mad.
And showed by one satiric touch.
No nation needed it as much.”
Was the way he put his bequest himself in one of his last poems. Just happened to know that. 👼
Jonathan Swift died on this day in 1745. What's not widely known is that he left the bulk of his fortune to found Irelands first psychiatric hospital. St Patrick's, as it's still known today.
Ah, the Taoiseach backs up
@fergalrte
’s assertion that the number of people coming to Ireland on ferries is extremely small. Don’t believe the “anecdotes”.
