people of KY deserve the option to end their pregnancies in a clinic environment.
@i_need_an_a
people of KY deserve the option to manage their own abortions.
@Plancpills
people of KY deserve to not be criminalized for their pregnancy outcomes.
@ifwhenhow
fighting back tears while trying to navigate callers to clinics out of state.
i lost it today and cried with a caller who is being forced to travel 600 miles for her abortion.
none of this is okay.
no election will ever liberate us. the two-party system was designed to maintain the existence of a ruling class. pointing the finger at voters is obfuscating the real disease in elections: white supremacy & capitalism
imagine having funding from warren fucking buffet & then telling a pregnant person that they don’t qualify for support with their $12800 abortion bc they make (maybe) $30k a year.
we are seeing more callers getting care later in pregnancy than ever before and i've essentially become a travel coordinator at this point.
i anticipated a rise in delayed care, but seeing it come to fruition before my eyes is fucking heart breaking.
i would highly suggest to anyone wanting to (just now) start an abortion fund/travel program (with no prior experience) to just… amplify the existing infrastructure that exists…
I am proud, and fucking humbled as hell, to announce that I have accepted the offer to join
@KyHealthJustice
as the Program Director for the Abortion Fund.
I am so grateful for the time I spent with
@ppfa
and
@PPAAEast
supporting the Patient Advocacy Program
sending love to every organizer that is holding an event today. i hope the action goes well. i hope more u get some well deserved rest.
(except Rise Up lol)
HUGE APPRECIATION to abortion clinic staff at EMW & at PP KY health centers that diverted folks out of state for 8 days & supported patients seeking abortion
language matters.
👉15 weeks isn’t “late-term”
👉 “viability” is subjective legal term
👉 the majority abortions later in pregnancy are a result of delayed care
👉 delayed care begets delayed care
imma say something & i don’t want yall to get mad at me.
(most) abortion funding is not mutual aid. (most) abortion funding is progressive charity.
it is mutual aid to philanthropists and clinic owners.
(most) abortion funds rely on grants & foundational wealth
just a friendly reminder to
A: NEVER counterprotest at a clinic. no matter what. don’t do it.
B: follow the lead of local repro organizers
C: know what the outcome of your action is!
what does it ask to do? who is for? and how does it HELP?
To be honest, Louisville has never felt like home to me. As an Appalachian living here, the awful things I’ve heard people say about the rest of the state is gross. I’ve been the outcast and I would be nothing without those who stayed to make a difference.
“palestine is anti abortion”
1) the US is fucking anti abortion
2) that justifies genocide???
y’all are so brain melted. it’s so simple mass murder is BAD actually no matter
what the govt or ideology dictates i cannot believe that’s something that needs to be explained
Today I wrapped up a case on the abortion fund I will never forget.
A caller who is taking a bus from WKY to seek care at one of the two operating clinics in the commonwealth (both providing in Louisville).
i mean at what point will folks in power start to take this shit seriously? almost the entire southeast has a near-total abortion ban. what is fucking happening.
FUCK FAKE CLINICS!!!
a caller told me a CPC confirmed they provided abortions and they prolonged her care so much she can’t get the medication abortion she wanted. she’s forced to do surgical now bc of a LIE.
fuckin unbelievable
rural/urban divide is its own barrier to abortion access. imagine supporting a person from louisa,ky to a major metropolitan area like chicago? it can be incredibly intimidating & i don’t think we talk about it enough.
had a podcast producer ask me why i stay in kentucky.
i had to think about it.
i’ve lived in ky almost my entire life. i LOVE ky. i understand why families will opt to leave.
some won’t be able to. i wanna stick around for them.
i’m literally a just 26 year old queer in a bathrobe eating moosetracks icecream out of the tub & an anti somewhere thinks i’m making blood pacts with satan
i really do not understand the round-off cartwheel back handspring folks in repro make to say, "women, trans men, and non-binary people with the capacity to be pregnant" like just say "people" why is this so hard
i used to work at a PP affiliate, and i used to work for PPFA, & i can tell u that the staff there are the most passionate, brilliant, dedicated people often times trying to change the culture that gatekeeping gen x/boomers force on the org.
i am so glad Brittany Watts will not be indicted but y’all need to cool it with the “this is the reality of Post-Roe America” no…
this is the reality of America for black & brown people & white feminism has simply failed to address it until it became useful to its own narrative
as always, i understand that some folks understandably will leave the state when their autonomy and live are being threatened. remember that there are those who can’t for a ton of different & complex reasons
many many many people who just learned about abortion funds abandoned us the minute the dobbs decision became old news. we are still in ky making sure people can access abortion out of state (traveling on avg 400-800 miles away from their homes)
idk the context but i am working over 40 hours a week coordinating funding and travel for people who can’t pay a cent towards their abortion bc it’s a large out of pocket expense + time sensitive so fuck anyone with anything to say other than “thank u” tbh
the non-profit industrial complex survives off the maintenance of oppressive structures. while orgs can do substantively good things, ultimately they cannot address root causes of oppression without disrupting their fidelity to capitalism.
the national abortion funds are overwhelmed, the local abortion funds are overwhelmed, the clinics are overwhelmed, and folks are still getting abortions.
sometimes i truly can’t conceptualize that once roe v wade is overturned things will get worse than they already are. the anxiety of this decision doesn’t come w relief, it’s just more & more & more than we all can already take
had a caller with a very long back & forth between clinics.
finally, after nearly a MONTH & four appointments in 2 different states later…she got the care she needed today.
she said today is the first time she’s felt relief.
excuse me while i cry 🥹
this! the automation of abortion support is frankly so unhelpful. abortion seekers often feel so isolated, especially those in banned states, and they deserve connection, care, and accompaniment.
the worst part about this is that most abortions later in pregnancy are due to delayed care due to significant barriers. so if one can’t gather the funding for a $700 abortion, y’all expect for them to somehow magically find an extra 12k?
imagine having funding from warren fucking buffet & then telling a pregnant person that they don’t qualify for support with their $12800 abortion bc they make (maybe) $30k a year.
f/u: i talked to the lead organizer of this action & she admitted no repro orgs in ky wanted to collab w them.
if the state u are planning an action in does not want ur support: LEAVE
@MollyOShah
yeah it logically makes sense but knowing how trauma informed fake clinics are (they aren't) and how trained they are to use medical equipment (they aren't) sent literal chills down my spine when a journo informed me today....
most people assume KYians are going to chicago.
it looks more like this.
we went from working w 1 clinic to 14 regularly + Dupont for later care callers
same thing happened in ky with a total ban…. dangled the carrot during midterms & still ruled against granting a TRO against the ban. solidarity with floridians and the rest of the south. we only have eachother
A wild decision by the Court to simultaneously start the clock on a 6 week abortion ban going into effect in May AND tell Floridians that they can vote on abortion in November. That's months of feeling the enormous negative impact of a 6 week ban to motivate people to vote.
when national orgs ask what they can do to support local orgs on the ground my sole answer is always “amplify our fundraisers, give us money directly, & connect us with (ur) funders that would support our work”
we don’t need our work replicated, we need it deeply invested in
the pinnacle of egomaniac to not only center urself in a global human rights crisis, but also throw an organization providing pivotal material support for the entire nation under the bus… publicly…
we are in hell
Why I Resigned From the DC Abortion Fund: The landscape of organizations ostensibly working to advance sexual and reproductive health has become mired in antisemitism
idk the context but i am working over 40 hours a week coordinating funding and travel for people who can’t pay a cent towards their abortion bc it’s a large out of pocket expense + time sensitive so fuck anyone with anything to say other than “thank u” tbh
our callers are already waiting weeks to a month for an appointment in a receiving state, beyond many other complex barriers.
a 6 week ban in FL impacts all of us and will further overwhelm receiving states, push scheduling back father, delay care,
so are dems gonna continue to exploit trauma porn to appease the right or are they actually going to support storytellers that reflect the majority of people seeking abortion? which overwhelmingly are people who aren’t survivors of SA, fetal diagnoses, and life endangerment
we supported 104 abortion seekers in the month of august.
no matter what the legal landscape looks like in KY, Kentuckians will ALWAYS need access to abortion.
55% of our callers have gone to IN for abortions this year. Now we are making HARD decisions about our budget to pivot. This is just so fucking hard & no one cares anymore
everything that infuriated me about the response to abortion bans last year was justified today.
people really just salivate for the new next social justice issue & then fucking disappear.
JFC... Little Way (fake clinic) told my caller that they could perform the abortion for $600... I'm so glad I reached her before she gave them her money...
I’m proud to accompany KYians with seeking care and will continue to do so in ANY climate that our lawmakers create.
But y’all… it shouldn’t EVER have to be like this.
@TypicalTahdig
i also hate that verbiage! how DARE u tell someone they make “too much money” when they’re getting hit with a bill that’s thousands of dollars by the time of service. in this economy?
i know this has already been said, but it bears repeating: the reality that repro orgs are being silent about Palestinian genocide while their unionized staff releases solidarity statements at much larger personal and professional costs is unconscionable
it is so fucking hard to listen to both parties exploit abortion access in their campaigns as a person managing an abortion fund… talking directly with people seeking abortion out of state… for over a year…
Many folks in KY already live in a post-roe reality with economic challenges, proximity to the clinic, and general stigma about their decision. Cases like this are not unusual.
i got approved for a tubal!!!! my ob is amazing. like any good doctor, we talked about risks and considerations & eventually decided this was the right decision for me!!!
surgery in august :)
