Here's the thing, Eltingville was never about fans getting bullied, it was about fans being bullies. Nerds were always portrayed as meek, awkward and hapless in pop culture. I was writing about the bastards and the haters in fandom, who only got worse over the years.

The Eltingville Club was about the absolute worst fan behavior. Pure negativity. But bc of the TikTok thing drifting over here I've been made aware that -- in a small way -- through fan art, art/process talk, discussions, etc, it sparked some really cool stuff. Really surprising.

The medium is beautiful and blameless. The industry is where the dirt is. Young creators often make poor business and life decisions because they go in wearing their fan blinders. Making comics with your favorite childhood characters rocks, but not for shit pay and no royalties.

FYI, the Eltingville Club collection includes two full-issue stories that wrap up the series for good. The first is about the inevitable break-up of the Club (after destroying a comic shop), the second a reunion 10 years later at SDCC, resulting in, well...another kind of ending.

Fun Trivia: WELCOME TO ELTINGVILLE aired in Japan and Mexico. I have copies of the dubs. The Japanese actors were real-deal anime voice actors. I love them, I pretended the jokes were funnier. Seeing Eltingville in Newtype magazine was a geek thrill. And as a comic! Too wild.

I get why people might not like it, find it unfunny, too mean. But I reject the accusations that I hated comics/fandom. You can love something and still be critical of it. Eltingville is a pipe bomb, but there's a love letter tucked into it. A non-fan couldn't write Eltingville.

The only international edition of The Eltingville Club was published in Spain by La Cupula Ediciones in 2007. Obviously not complete. The magazine El Vibora was running translations of the comics, and the collection came about because of that. A weird publishing happenstance.
