What do you know about the productivity and harvest of wild waterfowl? The biology of it is in some ways poorly known in Europe - but we can look at the USA first to see what they have found

@BylineTV
Watch Byline TV's excellent video above ⬆️⬆️⬆️and then direct your anger at those who conned people in our fishing communities along with millions of others as they systematically stole our rights, freedoms and protections through lies, cheating and illegality.
One has to celebrate little wins... not an ounce of this is gained alone - from family sacrifices to dearest colleagues, amazing students and vital collaboration with communities 😇🙂
#ecology
This is the most common wildlife crime in the UK - its also something nobody speaks of, nobody campaigns on, no celebrity social media films - whether its deer or hares - its not "hunting" or "shooting" folk - but people chasing animals with cars and dogs 🤬🤬
For all the reasonable concern about dogs and wildlife I find it completely bonkers that UK legislation protects free roaming
#cats
on others peoples property - especially in
#conservation
scenarios as per below /1
Massive over reaction and stirring from Simon - this a very well managed and studied pilot scheme to support small vessels and coastal communities - it's a teeny harvest quota - it will have zero effect on the numbers seen by tourists - move along
Tens of thousands of people up and down the country have been thrilled to see the huge Tuna feeding often a stones throw from the shore in British waters after an absence of 70 years. Now on a plate for the wealthy
@RickSteinRest
this iconic symbol of hope will be flushed away 🤯
@GeorgeFreemanMP
George you were a candlelight of reason and fairness before BoJo took office - now you are walking to heel - its sad - lets be very clear - you know No Deal is a car crash and it has nothing to do with the EU being poor negotiators and everything to do with Unicorns
The problem here is that if I find an NGO scientist out birding, fishing or even privately talking to me about their opinions and biases - say RSPB scientists whom many are friends - do we then consider all their work shoddy - no we don't and of course shouldn't. Petty. Childish.
And here is the scientist who undertook the Countryside Alliances 'science' . . . you couldn't make it up . . . and you don't have to . . .
Top work Timmy !
This is insane - more foxes were killed on roads than by hunting - the idea that fox hunting with hounds controlled foxes to the point of helping reduce lamb kills is unevidenced and widely known to be untrue.
@1GarethWynJones
knows this. Legal control exists - use it.
"There's nothing as cunning as a fox - overpopulation of anything causes problems"
@1GarethWynJones
says a neighbouring farm lost 50 lambs to foxes - he's supporting bringing back fox hunting.
He adds that hounds are bred to be 'instant killers'.

Reindeer, like many other deer, are hunted for their meat. If you visit Norway you will have no doubt eaten it, or seen other parts on sale from herders. 10M Turkeys will be sold this Christmas - what is the point of this stirring pot from

- an attack on Sami culture?
It's been quite a week - finishing on two highs - an excellent and productive MCZ management workshop followed by PROMOTION to Senior Lecturer

but this is nice ☺️
As soon as you value human lives less that the wildlife those people live with - you have just created the conditions for intense conflict and wildlife loss - this is why on-site applied conservation is different to keyboard conservation

I hate this - poison is the most despicable abuse and risk to both wildlife, people and our pets - whether in keepering or farming the use of poisoned baits to target predators must stop!!

How can anyone be so utterly ignorant and selfish to be illegally killing hen harriers - is it any wonder pressures on recreational hunting are so bad when it is associated with this depravity 😡😡
New scientific paper confirms ongoing & widespread hen harrier persecution on UK grouse moors.
Study found on average young birds survive only 4 months before being killed.

Its taken until now to recover our finances following job losses re 2008 crash - no small thanks to our family, friends and colleagues along the way - we have just picked up the keys for what should our family home for some time 😁
Fascinating example of dangers of rogue rewilders and their financiers - non authorised beaver reintroduction heading for cull in Italy - if this was community sponsored and authorised it wouldn't be happening - rogue rewilding is a crime however you dress it.
Italy plans on eradicating its tiny population of beavers. The cruelty and the stupidity of people seems to know no limits. Beavers are native to Italy, hunted to extinction by humans several centuries ago, and now back in small but growing pockets.
The worst part of it is that…

The bit where our union is pissing about pretending to be politicians and making claims against NATO, and against Ukraine instead of sorting out our current industrial action - that bit.
So some news - I am starting a research leave/ sabbatical in Sept and as part of that I have promised myself, family and friends to stop fighting the good fight, or as other see it a distraction 🤣 - and have a long twitter break - starting soon /1
Trophy Hunting is not a major threat to any species - what is driving species to extinction is habitat loss - and TH income helps prevent that - and hereth endeth the sermon👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Leaving this

I am Quote retweeting this because it needs to be recognised - as Tony points out - as much as I hold genuine high regard for Chris and other natural historian celebrities - he is using his privilege to polarise the tricky world of

Unlike many others - given the behaviour of the whippet that will be known to the owner - this is as close to allowing or setting a dog on shorebirds for recreation as you will see - that shifts it from disturbance to a possible

crime - certainly if it was mammals.
Seems like this disturbance is happening every day in the restricted area. It would be good if
@BirdWiseEK
could setup at the Pegwell hoverport one day as lots of dog walkers use that area and they certainly need educated.

Thanks Natalie - I am more angry about wasted public money on a Brexit not delivering on irresponsible promises, millions given to conservative donors without tender, tax avoiding companies and MPs, and £££ and time wasted by gov on useless PPE and killing our elderly
#diversion
can be done - and we absolutely should be reintroducing Lynx to England and Scotland and pos Wales. But we should not expect or promise fast results on deer control and we do need to invest in professional and recreational hunting/culls /1
The Iberian Lynx reintroduction program continues apace. First 2 of 10 animals to be released in

has now happened. I look forward to bumping into them.
#conservation
projects like this have to be long term & require commitment from all sides.
#Rewilding
This isn't controversial - and there is no point pointing fingers at farmers - but look to policy and our collective behaviours that "wanted" this - likewise we can choose to reverse it!
#birds
Big movements of Pintail being reported moving through Yorks and the

By aligning with CBT Natalie is really damaging her credentials here - as are any other Lords and MPs - their disinformation campaign has been robustly demonstrated - worse the decision will more likely hamper conservation 😞 - listen to the experts - not celebrities

But how will it work and will it be effective? We’ve launched an inquiry.

Imagine if rich men didn’t avoid taxes, didn't profiteer from war and supported the country they profit from. We might reduce asylum needs and not be so dependent on talented migrants.
Imagine if men stopped running away from their homelands and stayed to make them a better place to live?
We in the West need to stop encouraging and rewarding cowardice.

A nice story, but some dodgy science here. I've been studying 3 of these species for 5-20 yrs in British woods & Bialowieza forest. Lynx are great, but they don't & won't have the simple simplistic 'silver bullet' effect that

@domdyer70

Dom - genuine question - why is this cruel? What makes it cruel? These deer will have been killed cleanly, ethically, they provide the best quality and low carbon venison (I do get the nuance re travelled hunter) - but I struggle other than lobbying bias why you say cruel?
For the record - at t'weekend when I served seared fillet of muntjac, thinly sliced on warmed horseradish blinis, topped with a sliver of port and orange duck liver pate, lingonberry and a sprig of thyme - I think I held a satisfied proud smile 😲
