Everyone is important.
We need to remember - and we need to remind everyone - because it seems so easily forgotten.
My thoughts in
@westaustralian
this week.
A large part of the medical profession has backed itself into bias corner by prematurely assuming COVID-19 was or would become benign enough for us to all simply “live with” repeated infections.
Now many want to grasp every straw to avoid the notion they are terribly wrong.
The main argument I hear against masks is ‘people dont want them’.
Public health stops smoking, fences pools, mandates incredible car safety tech, & safe workplaces,
none of which people initially wanted - but that is the whole point of a public health campaign.
‘The child who died of covid had underlying health conditions’ is a dark phrase meant to convey
1. this avoidable death wasn’t our fault even tho we started this outbreak thru carelessness then failed to control it then gave up & pretended this was not only our PLAN but /2
I'm not tired of simple
#covid
precautions at all.
I have no problem wearing a mask when indoors in public & absolutely no issue eating alfresco or takeaway via the app & sending a tip.
I can keep this up; I don't feel it is a big price for a privileged first-worlder to pay.
Your triple dose vaccine is pretty good for protection against severe omicron.
However when the hospitals are overwhelmed, as most likely they will be, have you got a plan for the car accident or heart attack or stroke or cancer you might suffer?
Broken hospitals are dangerous.
So NSW jumped to 16 children admitted with covid now, 3 in ICU, 1 on a ventilator, the insiders tell me.
Protecting our children, whatever their prior health conditions, must be a national priority. We cant just vaccinate adults & pretend kids will be fine. Some are not already.
Doherty model predicts about 80 deaths of kids <16 in first 180 days (70% trigger for reopening, with low starting cases).
That’s why I think there are no more daily NSW press conferences.
As these deaths roll in people will lose their minds that this was the IN THE PLAN.
As I travel I see maskless frail elderly being loaded onto planes with care by family.
The disconnect between the love being displayed to them & the disregard for their safety is surely ignorance of airborne disease caused by failed public health messaging & misinformation.
Cant wait until the
#covid
movie gets to the bit where the cool kids who won't wear masks realise the geeks have been right all along & see the baddies for who they are & join the fight against airborne transmission.
Failing to mandate masks during a rampant lethal airborne pandemic is the embodiment of the principle that ‘I would rather you die than I be inconvenienced’.
We cannot build a positive flourishing future for anyone carrying a mounting burden of bad faith.
#COVID19
#auspol
‘Preventing
#covid
is just delaying the inevitable. Everyone’s gonna get it.’
The whole point of modern medicine is delaying inevitable disease, disability & death.
If you’re not into that, then get out of the way & make room for someone who is.
In the last few days I anaesthetised 3 very unwell patients who have had recent chemo.
They were all cared for by multiple unmasked hospital staff.
This ‘as required’ PPE setting is a sham & a lie in practice & undermines every other risk control too - it is very poor leadership.
If living with covid is 16 year olds in ICU & 27 year olds dying suddenly at home, talk to me again about your “opening up” when you have delivered safe vaccine to 80% of the entire population.
When people say we have to balance ‘the economy’ against health & human life they dont actually mean THE economy.
They mean THEIR economy, their personal wealth.
The actual economy will be just fine, better in fact, if we save every last vulnerable person that we possibly can.
No hospital that I know of is enforcing that all healthcare workers wear masks around immune compromised patients - even tho it is often in the fine print of infection control guidelines somewhere.
Why is this ok?
Just flew 3 hours across a continent.
My 4yo and I the only ones we have seen at either airport - or in flight - with any masks.
When this is the outcome, public health education has failed.
Airline advice seems aggressively silent re masks.
No-one who works as a paramedic, in the ED, the ICU or the long covid clinic thinks we can ‘live with’ covid.
Wishful thinking defeated many empires before, the ones that survive this will be those that are nimble with vaccine, masks & clean air.
And humble enough to listen.
Instead of ‘underlying health conditions’ alongside covid deaths can we have an actuarial report on years of life lost & years of health lost?
Many underlying conditions, if treated, affect neither quality nor quantity of life.
We must return to a world where prevention of disease is seen as better than hoping for a cure.
This is impacting hardest on all the vulnerable groups that we profess to support.
Public health must return to its role of always being a thorn in the side of disease enablers.
Some doctors on here saying there won’t be a tsunami of child deaths from covid. Good to know but no-one is suggesting that.
What we are saying is that even rare deaths, 2% hospitalisation (for any reason) & long covid is plenty enough reason to PREVENT covid in our kids thanks.
If you believe that we are seeing a
#covid
"reaping" of the vulnerable, yet you don't INSIST on easy measures that can save people, then what is the job of Chief Medical Officer?
Is our "best medical advice" that the frail must die so the rest can decide to shop maskless?
The privileged ableist perspectives on what a pain it is to wear a mask during a pandemic to a wedding or party or shop after ‘all this time’ are quite extraordinary.
Look at it from the point of view of yourself but on chemo.
Is that unimaginable?
Let’s be clear.
The opposition to mask mandates is political, not as a result of decent health advice.
This will keep
#covid
as either number 1 or 2 in causes of death cos without mandates, we dont wear them.
Politics is a dangerous game.
#auspol
If only we had known back in 2022 that permitting infection of all the little kids would result in life-long problems for a small, but very real percentage of them.
Can we just fast forward to the bit where we accept that vaccination is both absolutely vital & also not enough?
We need clean air. Good masks. Everywhere. Cut down transmission. Vax for little kids too.
This is not even at the start of being over.
Sad seeing so many unmasked old folks in the shops.
Waiting at pharmacies for the meds they hope will keep them healthy cos they enjoy their lives with their grandkids. They earned this autumn. Long may they keep it.
Lack of airborne protection is a massive public health fail.
Genuine question
At what daily death rate (if not 50) will Australia ask its citizens to wear masks while in indoors in public spaces.
Note - I am not saying mandate, I am saying ASK.
The governments are not even doing that. Where are the medical advisors?
I never thought ANY doctors would approve an exit strategy from covid that just assumes infecting ALL children <12yo with a toxic virus is OK.
It is not the right thing to do ethically, medically or economically.
The long term damage is immeasurable.
#findourkidsavaccine
Those who said we would soon enter an endemic phase of mild
#covid
, that omicron was mild, that we should abandon all protections & live with it (without mentioning the disability, death & economic toll) remind me of crypto hustlers.
After this wave they wont hoodwink as many.
24 of the 59 adults in ICU in NSW are double vaxxed I’m told.
Living with covid in our dystopian near future - brought to you by covid libertarianism.
Get your third dose as soon as you can.
Never mistake
- anyone’s concern for covid spread as ‘anxiety’
- any expression of concern for others, esp children, as ‘weakness’ or timidity.
Big risk taking is dumb, not admirable.
Appropriate risk management is mandatory in pandemics & does not include sacrifice of anyone.
Can't wait for BA5 to peak & cases start to decline a little so that people can tell me it is all over for a few weeks while I still wear a mask everywhere.
Can't wait for it then to start running away again so that people look confused & argue about whether kids spread it again
Australia : wow there is a teenager in ICU, this is serious. 😳
Rest of world : did our teenagers being ICU mean nothing to you, or were you just not paying attention cos you think what happens overseas can’t happen to you?
Living with
#covid
means you must now avoid public indoor spaces if you are
- immunocompromised (including unknowingly)
- frail for any reason
- old
- unable to be vaccinated
- under 5 yrs old
- hoping to avoid long covid
- healthy & young but unlucky
I avoid crowds if possible & wear a decent mask in public places indoors because I understand medical science & I dont like being sick or making others sick. It is no big effort.
Weird huh?
It is not possible to protect the most vulnerable from
#covid
unless we reduce rampant covid transmission between everyone.
We are all in the same lifeboat here & the big lie is that there are groups with superior health or age that have nothing & no-one to worry about.
So are we going to get back to sensible encouragement of low level public health measures like wearing masks when indoors in public & decent ventilation of buildings now?
Can we drop the fake pandemic is over nonsense & prevent some disease?
Cheerleaders for trashing ALL COVID protections have set back public health basics like
- vaccination
- safe workplace air
- PPE
- trust in science
- compassion for medically vulnerable minorities
- consideration for others
- the precautionary principle
by about 100 years.
Close examination of death certificates from 2022 revealed that yes, Australia had many COVID deaths. >8x the road toll. In all age groups, not just the not so old over 65’s.
How long are we going to pretend it didn’t/isn’t happening?
My thoughts in
@westaustralian
this week.
A lot of people trying to find ‘balance’ in the argument about
#covid
deaths & long covid & reducing transmission.
They did that with asbestos & cigarettes & road safety & pool fences & coal dust & drink driving & Chernobyl.
Sometimes things are just bad & need to be avoided.
How do we know hardly anyone will isolate if it’s not mandatory?
Well we did an experiment with masks didn’t we?
Make them optional, people think they are no longer necessary. Not just a few. 99%.
Congrats to the pro disease lobby. Excess death & long
#covid
is on you.
I was never dumb or cool enough to smoke.
Now I am still not dumb or cool enough to catch repeated SARS-2 to impress strangers who dont care if I live or die.
I’m masking up cos I want to retire young & healthy enough to avoid the health services - which will be stuffed.
Proud to be abused by those who dont give a shit when old people or sick people or disabled people die before their time.
I care.
Their deaths matter. The coming disability from long covid matters.
And if your turn for a bad outcome arrives I will still think you mattered too.
Live with it? Be honest.
What you mean is
“get comfortable with a new cause of mass death & disability that could be reduced dramatically with masks & fresh air - which are far cheaper & easier to implement than most public health measures we use now for much smaller problems’.
Pretty sure EVERYONE I know who has
#covid
got it via their kid’s school.
Weren’t the usual suspects spinning some nonsense about schools being safe & how masks are unnecessary etc?
Excess deaths are due to the
#covid
pandemic - either directly or indirectly - there is no other new cause of death around.
XS is not decreasing; it wasn’t just a few imminent deaths brought forward.
Public health has betrayed its remit - we must return to disease prevention /2
I wont debate
#covid
or anything else with people who dont care about sickness and death of strangers.
It is a waste of time if there is no compassion beyond their inner circle.
Sorry 2022 but you will be remembered as the year that most people came to believe that death & disease for many ‘others’ was a reasonable wager to gamble on an ill-fated, ultimately futile, attempt to return to a pre pandemic lifestyle.
Maybe I have a different view on the risks of the pandemic because I live with & help to care for my mother who, like all the elderly, has the right to be treated with a little respect by society & not just be left out with the pandemic trash.
A few paediatricians argue that kids don't need vax cos covid is "mostly mild".
BUT nearly all diseases that we vax for are mild for most kids.
Get out of the way & let us protect the little ones, esp those with underlying medical problems, who are just as deserving as anyone.
As my workmates groan back to work after
#covid
- some having had two rounds of
#Omicron
this year - they dont laugh at me any more - they ask where they can get a Halo mask like mine…
Workplaces that are not flexible to allow high level reusable PPE will keep losing staff.
The idea that for children to live happy lives & reach their full potential they must inevitably be exposed to repeated bouts of SARS2 lacks both will & imagination.
They can easily breathe clean air to enable better health & educational outcomes with minimal thought & resource.
The people want
#covid
reduced so they dont get sick every few months, or worse.
Small biz want customers & workers healthy - so they can pay the bills.
Hospitals need a LOT less patients.
Who are politicians so afraid of that they will not mandate masks?
Who is in charge?
Aussies will vaccinate & isolate & lockdown & fight a fire or flood without expecting payment.
But tell us that some of our little kids have to die without vaccine because the govt wants to open up sooner & we will advise you where to put that plan.
#findourkidsavaccine
I’m told I got attacked in The Oz today.
I may have annoyed someone by pointing out obvious reality, or failing to accord some preening middle aged male ego the demanded respect.
Let’s direct our energy toward finding a safe vaccine for our 0-12yo’s shall we? That’s important.
Re health practitioners’ right to free speech in Australia - you may want to co-sign our letter to Health Ministers @
Patients are safer when doctors can speak freely & disagree with those in positions of power robustly.
@YouAreLobbyLud
The five day isolation farce is supposedly to help employers.
Ok CFO’s let’s do maths:
You want one worker off for 7 days or five off for 5?
Anyone? Bueller?
This is illogical & will backfire.
Then the long covid will take up residence in what is left of your productivity.
The reason that many are trying to normalise & downplay the very real deaths & ongoing disability being caused by SARS2 is that admitting now that they have been so confidently wrong means accepting a terrible responsibility.
It is a big incentive to avoid the scientific truth.
So it turns out ‘locking down as cave dwellers forever’ in WA actually means opening up in about 3 mo with nearly all vaxed, hopefully including little kids, third doses for most vulnerable, very few deaths & a healthy society meantime.
Put that plan in your pipe & smoke it.
I get pushback for wearing a mask when it is not mandated.
Is this because exposing the ‘covid is over’ comfort talk for the lie that it obviously is makes some uncomfortable?
Otherwise what does it matter to anyone else what I wear on my face?
Governments that take our taxes but can’t provide an ambulance, covid test & a hospital bed when we need one are bludging.
Lazy calls for ‘personal responsibility’ are a sure sign they are political good for nothing slackers & shirkers.
This idea that ‘these covid deaths are almost all really old people who were gonna die anyway - be mature about it’ is
a- disingenuous &
b - the same inhuman approach that leads to disgraceful aged care & NDIS underfunding scandals.
It is ‘health supremacism’.
I thought the worst with cvd would be - let it rip.
I didn’t guess they’d also
stop testing & reporting (we do for flu!),
make antivirals unavailable,
not bother updating vaccines,
do nothing on clean air,
ignore long cvd,
& no vax for kids under 5.
How is this good medicine?
Lies of the pandemic:
‘80% vaccinated means we can…’
Can what?
Infect 20% of adults and everyone under 16?
That’s over 40% of the population.
Are you kidding, or just dangerous?
Those with ‘underlying health conditions’ are not expendable.
Asthma, diabetes, epilepsy hypertension, allergies, heart, CP, cancer, kidney, liver, lung, muscle, autoimmune, thyroid disorders, HIV, ad infinitum.
All treatable.
No-one left behind.
Haha.
In other news I have been forcing the 4yo to wear shoes & a hat & sunscreen & a helmet & a seatbelt despite obvious distress at times. I just make her do it if she says no! I grabbed her & made her cry when she went for a frypan handle on the stove. As for crossing roads..
Did you hear them say that reduced covid restrictions would bring MORE freedoms? That was a crock wasn't it.
Not impressed with leaders who ask vulnerable people to not call an ambulance, & not get a covid test? Me either.
My thoughts in
@westaustralian
this week.
Time for a proper examination of the medical advice given to governments during this pandemic & to call out those who have been repeatedly wrong - in science & predictions - & thereby caused untold damage.
Start by removing anyone who denied that airborne spread is the problem.
The price of long cvd is high for those struggling to regain their former health.
Attempts to obscure the name & scale of post viral syndromes are morally, medically & scientifically bankrupt.
My thoughts in
@thenightlyau
this week (no paywall)
Downgrading healthcare workers to surgical masks during an ongoing airborne pandemic is not just dumb - in a workforce sense - it is an abrogation of responsibility for workplace safety by those managers & directors who are accountable under WHS law.
Removing mask mandates in schools while there is community spread of SARS is cruel to children & families with medical vulnerabilities.
Being the only kids wearing masks is much less effective & makes them ‘different’ which is something we should try to avoid.
Those who gave very bad advice ie "that on balance of the risks it is better to permit spread of SARS-Cov-2 than prevent it"
seem to be getting nervous & trying to rewrite their "contributions" eg regarding airborne spread, need for PPE & when the pandemic would be "over".
Call me radical, but I believe patients have a RIGHT to get safely treated - without us giving them a preventable infectious disease while they are in hospital.
My thoughts in
@westaustralian
this week.
People ask me to ‘more optimistic’ & spread some good news.
Ok - we know how to reduce covid transmission to save lives & prevent disability & keep business open!!
Clean air. Masks. Updated vaccines. Antivirals.
Govts have access to all these things!! 🎉😀
The least ‘free’ people I have ever seen are those who need ventilators in the ICU. They have to be sedated & paralysed with drugs. Then our tubes & machines take care of their breathing, nutrition, fluids, urination and defaecation.
Families fret.
Value your freedom? Get vaxxed.
I wear a mask indoors in public cos I’m selfish.
Something about higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, early dementia & long covid fatigue trashing my plans just doesn’t seem to make the bare-faced fun of sucking up dirty air seem worth it.
But that’s just me I guess.
Children with pre-existing health conditions do not deserve to die from covid any more than anyone else does.
They deserve love, care, precaution & vaccines.
#FindOurKidsaVaccine
2/ the smart thing to do plus everyone who is not letting covid run free at manifestly inadequate vaccination rates is an idiot.
And
2. ‘Normal’ children wont get sick & die - while even govt’s fave Doherty model says oh yes they will you liars. Dozens.
#findourkidsavaccine
Imagine putting your medical name & face to campaigns to remove public health protections;
you SUCCEED in selling ‘hybrid immunity’ to politicians (yay!)
then slowly wake up to the nauseating realisation you were spectacularly & irredeemably wrong about what would happen next.
IMO a healthcare worker turning up to work RAT positive, or not testing when indicated, should be regarded as professional misconduct.
That should not be controversial, but I expect it might be, given the zeitgeist is "care about anything - as long as it is not THAT virus."
The first big lie was 'covid is not airborne, & masks are bad'.
The next one was that 'only old folk die, it's fine to let the kids catch it'.
Then 'the economy will do better without lockdowns, just let disease spread & you will prosper'.
Oh what a tangled web they weave...
Children dying from covid may have underlying conditions but that does not mean they would have died anyway.
Without permissive covid spread policies they would have a better chance of living & continuing to delight all who know & love them.
#FindOurKidsaVaccine
NSW Govt : get rid of all the restrictions
Experts with insight : yeah that wont work
NSW Govt : be quiet nerds we have to live with covid
Experts : you cant do that without masks, tests & ambulances
NSW Govt : stop calling ambulances & um, put your masks on
Experts : sigh
Covid is spread through the air. When exercising we breath out more than 10 times as much air. The only shock here is that anyone is shocked.
‘Huge shock’: Sydney gym boss speaks after FIFTEEN people catch COVID-19 - 7NEWS
When govts showed the first signs of ‘letting it rip’, I said they would drop all public precautions & just let people die.
I was pilloried as people pointed to the Doherty model with masks & TTIQ.
No-one is arguing now.
It’s time for the reaping - but we wont take it quietly.
Mum sees her 96th spring dawn tomorrow.
She is lively, funny, kind, naughty & irreplaceable.
She and many more like her deserve our respect, veneration & care.
People are not dispensable just so that we can avoid isolating an extra 2 days or wearing a mask for a few hours.
I dont understand why the people who advocate for US and UK style policies for covid, who downplay masks & clean air, dont look at their death toll, compare it to what Australia has achieved in the last two years, and slink away.

priority rapid testing NOW.
This is not a game.
No-one who works in ICU would say we have many ventilated beds available for ‘immediate use’ at all. We already cancel heart surgery cos ICUs full.
Suffering is massive with long stay ICU COVID. 33 this sick is failure, not success as some would have us believe.
Overwhelmed? The nation has over 2200 ventilators for immediate use and only 475 in use with only 33 of those used for COVID patients. Challenging?Yes. Tough on the frontline in Sydney? unquestionably. Overwhelmed? No.
