“Enough” won an

2021 Salute to Excellence Award last night. A piece I wrote and narrated with a phenomenal team at

I always found it to be straightforward to play in Philadelphia. Care, treat the fans with respect and play hard - every day. They will let you know when you fall short but they will also let you know when you stand tall. Am I right?

I told Dusty Baker after his World Series win that I would write a poem for him. And then voice it.
So here it is…

Maddux figured out that when I led off the game, I would be in the batter’s box and also looking down (after my stretching routine). So one game, by the time I looked up, the ball was halfway home. Strike one. Guy was 10 steps ahead of you. Always.

My father, who passed before meeting any of his grandchildren, shared a birthday with Martin Luther King Jr. Today I explore being a father and the opportunity to manage in

Bobby was an outstanding all around player who quietly destroyed his opponents with a smile. His teammates knew he was a world class hitter. We often watched him like we were fans. Not for how far he would hit it, but for what magic he could create with a bat.

Bobby Abreu has been selected as the 2019 Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame inductee!
He will be inducted on Saturday, August 3, as part of Toyota Alumni Weekend.
I dropped down a bunt in Dodger Stadium. No way the 3B would even bother throwing the ball. Too good a bunt. Then the 1B stretched and I was out by a half step.
Who in the world has that kind of arm?!?!?

I lost my father the last game of the season before I played for Dusty Baker and like so many players who came across him, I became a son again. He touched seven decades in the game I love and he has always led with love. So well deserved. Congratulations, Dusty!

Congrats again to

I tried to get Ozzie Smith in St. Louis. I dreamed of the moment. The Wizard would be smacked back to Oz. I slid in hard to the outfield side of the base. He gets the ball, steps on 2nd and then steps to the mound side of 2nd to turn two. I missed him by 10 feet.

To the “but you still have to hit the ball” camp.
If Superman fights against Superman who has one extra super power, it is obvious who will win most of the time.
Small enhancements lead to big advantages in the sky of the elite.

In Pedro Gomez, we lost a bridge-builder. The best of coming together and bringing people to one understanding with energy, perseverance, and humanity. He treated breaking news like it was a birthday present to hand to us at our surprise party. Heartbreaking.

Rex. I got the game winning hit in Game 3 the 2003 NLCS. The postgame questions framed it as the “biggest hit of my life.” But it wasn’t even close. It was the hit after recovering from a torn hamstring, the hit after my father died. Life comebacks are the biggest hit. Always. 👊🏾
I was arrested 8-years ago this week for stealing from an Apple Store to support my 14-year drug habit. It’s been 8-years for me this week without painkillers/opioids. Life’s hard. For everyone. Friends and family saved me. Check in on your people…

I want to thank the entire OTL team for helping put this together. You can only imagine the emotions of piecing together these difficult images to find the right connection. Very fortunate to work with them.
As someone who hit 59 homeruns, most of which scraped the top of the wall, I feel you Len. Although whenever I did break the 400 foot mark, I wanted to notify all citizens on all highway billboards in and out of the city.
Ian. It does serve baseball players well to have long memories. For pattern recognition but also for grudges, unfortunately. One minor league manager slapped me (one of many incidents) and it was either do nothing or retaliate and never make it to the big leagues. I did nothing.
I want to recognize Kyle Schwarber for his first homerun against a lefty this season as he dramatically waited until the last week of the season. Mr. Rodón, you have been special Schwarbered. Congratulations to all and to all a good night.
