My husband left us when I was in the hospital fighting cancer. “This isn’t what I signed up for,” were his words. The kids heard him say that he wouldn’t raise them if I died. I thought when he left that I wouldn’t recover from it. I totally did. My life is much better now.

When I was young, my father took me to meet his friend. She was a beautiful woman with a guitar. Knowing I was deaf, she let me touch it for the vibrations. I set next to her on the step, my hand on her guitar, as she sang to me. Her eyes were so kind. Her name was Loretta Lynn.
