As you may have already seen, Flaco the Eurasian eagle-owl has passed away. I am sad beyond words. Flaco defied the odds and made quite a life for himself in the city over the past year. Along the way he came to mean so much to so many, including me. ❤️🦉

Flaco, the @centralparkzoo ’s Eurasian eagle-owl, is so handsome. Last night, he flew to the south end of Literary Walk, where he swooped at a rat unsuccessfully. Then he returned to the zoo’s edge. This long exposure was faintly lit by street lights. #birds #birdwatching #birdcpp

I love traveling to Canada for work: this past week in Ontario, I saw my first parliament of owls! Several long-eared owls were roosting together, concealed in a row of trees. At the end of dusk, they dispersed quickly but one provided lovely looks first! #birds #birding #nature

The results of Flaco’s necropsy confirmed what I expected but they made me sad again all the same. Flaco was unique and special but I don’t think his life was worth more than the lives of native red-tailed hawks and peregrine falcons who are subject to the same hazards. #birdcpp
