Star-Advertiser sports columnist and other stuff, like adjunct journalism instructor at University of Hawaii-Manoa. Those beers weren't all mine, really.

Yes, from what I can tell, the kid in blue was using proper techniques. He just slowed it down a lot so the kid in red could have a chance. ... So, in a sense, the kid in blue was coaching the kid in red, in addition to helping him experience competition and victory.
Ridiculous. My friends and I would've been in jail two or three times a week in our teens and 20s. We'd drive all over the island to find where the run was.
These cops just threatened to arrest some guys hooping at a park. They say you need a permit to play basketball at the park — if you don’t live in the neighborhood.
Dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. Aren’t there more pressing issues America is facing??
To win with a true freshman at QB who hadn't played a snap in a college game in place of starter leading nation in several passing categories is a huge team-builder for a squad that has already displayed a lot of unselfishness. Remarkable.

Thank you for making Twitter a little bit less toxic. And be happy for that man ... although he died after his wife and apparently had no children or other close relatives, it sounds as though he found someone to love and to be loved by.
ok, the people shooting the video are friends who put her up to it, gotta be. Although I do have to admit to doing similar to this with rental cars ... but not repeatedly!!!!
If Corky were still with us his cartoon today would be two other late, great Hawaii icons: Robert up in the clouds, interviewing Colt. This poignant story by
@JeffMillerLAT
might be a tough read for heart-heavy Hawaii sports fans, but the work is superb.
Darren Hernandez pointed this out to me earlier today: Jordan Ta'amu (Pearl City/Ole Miss), Tua Tagovailoa (St. Louis/Bama) and McKenzie Milton (Mililani/UCF) combined to pass for 9 TDs today. Milton also ran for 1. Would've been nice to see any one of them in a Hawaii uniform.
I'm really happy for Dave Aranda. I thought he'd end up being an anonymous NFL assistant coach. Not a bad gig, but not as good as what he's experiencing now. Very deserving guy.
Facebook reminds me it was three years ago today that
@NickRolovich
was introduced as the new head coach of the University of
#hawaiifb
football team. It hasn't been smooth (when is it ever?), but the overall improvement from back then is real.

Thinking about how this got started and came to this conclusion: The lovely couple came down from the nose-bleeds to seats they didn't pay for, and when the season-ticket holder behind repeatedly asked him to sit down, 'Little Boy' started talking sh*t.
I almost forgot how great a player Chris Brown was. An old-school bad-ass MLB. Nick Rolovich reminded me what a great leader Brown was, crediting him for turning his
#HawaiiFB
career and the season around with a short halftime talk early in '01. Players will listen.
Backup quarterback Chevan Cordeiro and
#hawaiifb
found a way to win tonight against Wyoming, 17-13. Here's my first quick take on it, to be updated with quotes from Coach Nick Rolovich.
Before I leave for a NYE gathering, my suggestion to UH football fans is to take a deep breath, take a break from ripping everything and everyone out of frustration and enjoy the holiday. And don't pop fireworks near dogs and small kids. Happy New Year!
As I watched
#HawaiiFB
offense yesterday, at times I thought I was seeing replays from the previous generation. Great execution. The run-and-shoot looked like it never left!
One of the things I like about Nick Rolovich is that he is a stand-up guy postgame, even after tough, disappointing losses. Doesn't get terse or rude, just answers the questions and tries to provide insight, same as he does after wins.
#HawaiiFB
coach Nick Rolovich talked about the decision he has to make at quarterback looking ahead and his team’s copious penalties against Fresno State.
Fresno State turned the ball over six times.
#HawaiiFB
took advantage of them, and won with a true freshman quarterback Brayden Schager in his first start.
#hawaiifb
quarterback Cole McDonald has still yet to throw an interception this year, or in his entire college career for that matter. After his 14-for-20 first half against Rice, he is 70-of-98 this season with no picks.
Folks who think the
#hawaiiFB
coach selection is "dragging out" should remember a process in line with state law must be followed. And the timeline is actually being accelerated compared to what is required for a routine hire, but with proper vetting included.
This was an incredible second-half comeback by the
#hawaiifb
defense, and an offense sparked by true freshman Chevan Cordeiro coming off the bench to throw 3 TD passes. I'll have a post on UH's Hawaii-bowl-clinching win at soon.
@AintNoSeatsPod
Sure. It was close between several teams for no. 25. Came down to Kansas and JMU. Kansas has some decent wins. But JMU's lopsided win over Middle Tennessee State, which has since won all 3, including over Miami yesterday, put them over the top imo.
So far the biggest news from
#hawaiifb
presser with David Matlin is that he said "That's possible" when asked if June Jones and/or Rich Miano could be hired for head coach Tim Chang's staff.
The players are student-athletes at a state school. If they are leaving en masse because of the actions of an $800K salaried state employee it's right for them to be concerned.
Per
@dave_reardon
- there will be an informational online briefing held by the
@HawaiiSenate
regarding
@HawaiiFootball
next Friday.
My question - why should the Senate be concerned about "Issues relating to the transfer of players?"
Kelly Slater once told me that waves worthy of The Eddie are waves that drive fear into the fearless. That's why the contest so rarely goes on. Today it looks to be a go.
#TheEddie
A friend just said this must be exciting for me to see
#hawaiifb
off to such a thrill-ride of a start. It is. Especially bc I admire, respect
@NickRolovich
. He "gets it." So sincere in his aloha, and insistence that team respect game, each other, fans and entire state.
It's wasting a lot of people's time and energy. I should've been writing some columns on their court sports teams that have won 12 in a row instead of this sh*t show.
The thing that's really starting to annoy me is that on top of insulting him, they wasted his time. If they had been honest upfront, then the whole interview process could have been avoided. Stringing him along is extra rude and unprofessional (esp. for those preaching integrity)
Am I the only one who when I put the news on sometimes on certain channels in Hawaii I feel like I've turned the TV on in a mainland hotel room? That's one reason I'm glad Sam Spangler is back on the tube. Kamaaina to the core.
The oft-repeated "I'm not booing the team I'm booing the playcalling" line is ridiculous. If you understand anything about team concepts you know that what affects one affects all. And this is supposed to help a 3-0 team continue to win how? Next time bet the moneyline.
@Gamecock94
@ewhigham
@dannykanell
Count me among many who agree with you Jeff. Reasons against 8 are all fabricated, especially the one about too many games (March Madness anyone?). It makes absolutely no sense to have a tourney that excludes one of P5 champs, and unfair to exclude an exceptional G5 team like UCF
Here's the approximate breakdown as of this afternoon on the 1,000 spectators at
#hawaiifb
game tomorrow: 330 football program; 60 visiting team; 310 season ticket holders; 100 UH students; 200 corporate partners.
I was thinking the exact same thing. And if that is the case, why did
#hawaiifb
interview Jones and offer him a job instead of saying "no thank you" from the start?
ASU didn't hire June Jones based on character, so ASU hired & fired Todd Graham based on his character. Then UH hired & fired Graham based on his character & now UH is questioning June Jones's character based on ASU questioning his character? Character confusion
@dave_reardon
Next Friday the state senate is holding an informational briefing regarding
#hawaiiFB
... online ... public invited, but no public testimony. I just wrote a story for
@StarAdvertiser
on it, and will link as soon as it's posted.
This has always been my favorite. Used to have a press box that was more like a tree house. Great people too. Was covering a game there about 35 years ago; car got stuck leaving the lot and Coach Mitsui had three linemen come push it out.
Another nominee for best stadium backdrop:
Raymond Torri Field at Waianae High School
I have been to a couple hundred football stadiums & this location is the elite of the elite. Imagine this being your home stadium as a high school player!? An unparalleled ocean view…wow🤩
This confirms McKenzie Milton as a Heisman frontrunner heading into next season. In case you were wondering, UCF's non conference foes for 2018 are North Carolina, Florida Atlantic and Pitt.
Starting QB injured, freshman making first start? No problem. Fans not allowed at homecoming game? No problem. Opponents ranked 18th in nation? No problem.
#hawaiiFB
overcame all kinds of adversity to beat Fresno State.
@TheOnlyEdAsner
When I was a kid, I wanted to work for Lou Grant someday. I think your dad and his castmates helped inspire a generation of actors AND journalists.
Played basketball for the first time in a long time today. Was dropping dimes, left and right. ... Then one of the other players picked them up and said, "Uncle, you like your loose change?"
Thank you
@arejayhollis
for sharing your perspective on this ... everyone in Hawaii is a stakeholder, but you are uniquely qualified to speak on the issue at hand, and I know you are among those who want to be an agent for positive change.
The
#hawaiifb
defense stops UNLV on fourth down at the Rebels own 7 and UH runs out the clockt. Hawaii wins 35-28 and has clinched a Hawaii Bowl berth.
OK, here's my first take on
#hawaiifb
's stirring comeback win against UNLV tonight, and whether Chevan Cordeiro has done enough now to unseat Cole McDonald as the Warriors starting QB.
The last time
#hawaiifb
played at Army (2010) the Warriors from UH edged the warriors from West Point 31-28 by building a lead early, slumping in the middle and finishing strong. Sounds familiar. Also, that was the last Hawaii team to finish with a winning record.
21 penalties in this game just announced as a SoFi Hawaii Bowl record ... then again, everything in the first SoFi Hawaii Bowl is a SoFi Hawaii Bowl record.
#hawaiifb
Hawaii SB 3268, as amended/passed by Ways and Means today, would allocate $3.6 million gen'l funds to UH-Manoa sports, $400K to Hilo. (Same bill empowers regents to hire/fire AD and others paid $200K/year). Still hoops to go through before law. Full story to come
@StarAdvertiser
One of the things about anxiety and depression is that tasks or social situations that seem "easy" or "normal" for most folks can be very challenging or dreadful for those afflicted. I think this column is free content; I apologize in advance if it is not.
@KirkHerbstreit
Great exposure for Manly "Pumba" Williams and Kalen Hicks and the entire Hawaii program. And a lot of eyes were also on Cedric Byrd's 4 TDs and more than 200 receiving yards. Great stuff that maybe gets lost among other great stuff if it's not Week Zero.
