Finally --- the 2nd edition of ISLR is out!!!!🥳🎉🪅🍾 Well, sort of. 🙄It's "published", but due to shortages in the global paper supply, hard copies won't be available for a bit longer 😢😭🤦‍♀️ You can pre-order a hard copy from Springer/Amazon, & **download the pdf today**! 1/

The Bias-Variance Trade-Off & "DOUBLE DESCENT" 🧵 Remember the bias-variance trade-off? It says that models perform well for an "intermediate level of flexibility". You've seen the picture of the U-shape test error curve. We try to hit the "sweet spot" of flexibility. 1/🧵

Why does this matter? In many contemporary settings (think: the internet), sample sizes are so huge that we can get TINY p-values even when the deviation from the null hypothesis is negligible. In other words, we can have STATISTICAL significance w/o PRACTICAL significance. 7/

Google discovered that giving every employee a credit card and trusting them to follow policy on expenses, even with some bad actors, was cheaper than the enforcement and structures most companies use. How much do you waste due to low trust? Can you do the math for your company?

One of my students wrote in my course evaluation that they "really love the professor's nerd humor". Thanks and I appreciate the sentiment, but at the same time it stings a bit because that was just my regular humor 🤓🤦‍♀️😭

But in practice, what if we decide what test(s) to conduct AFTER we look at data? Our p-value will be misleadingly small because we peeked at the data. Pre-specifying our analysis plan in advance keeps us honest… but in reality, it’s hard to do!!! 12/

Checking in for a flight from Canada back to Seattle. The woman at the @AlaskaAir checkin desk asked me if I’ve been to China or Iran in the past 14 days. “No”, I replied, “but I have been to Seattle.” Friends, she did not even crack a smile. #CoronaVirusSeattle #coronavirus

Often, people focus on that tiny p-value, and the fact that the effect is of **literally no practical relevance** is totally lost. 8/

If you’re testing whether mean=0 and actually the truth is that mean=0.000000001, and if you have a large enough sample size, then YOU WILL GET A TINY P-VALUE. 6/
