Over the last 22 days, I’ve been on a road trip from Georgia to Maine. I stayed off social media to be as present as possible. I needed that time to build confidence, experience joy, and soak up beauty. Still a bit in awe at my ability to do a trip like this again!

Not lost on me that a black queer artist and a white country singer came together to sing a song about belonging. America is starved for connection across divides and that performance shows how much music has the power to heal. #grammys #tracychapman

I stopped by my sister’s house tonight. They were about to decorate their Christmas tree. I said, “I don’t want to intrude on family time.” My bro-in-law said, “You are family.” Married friends, you’ll never know how much it means to be included in special things like this!

Grief does not always look like crying. Sometimes it’s: -missing turns while driving -barely mustering the energy to pack for a trip -feeling numb during big or small moments that once brought joy -having a hard time making decisions

One time I was pouring my heart out to a friend & I ended with, “but God’s been faithful” She said, “you don’t have to tie the bow” How many of us feel obligated to state we still believe truth when we are unfiltered? Be the kind of friend that doesn’t make others tie the bow.

Instead of attending an Easter service, I drove to Dad’s grave and read the Resurrection story out loud. I needed the reminder that the place of his earthly ending is not his final ending. Death does not get the final say.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get married. But if the Lord calls me to this, my priorities in a spouse look different than 10 years ago. I used to want a man with charm. Now I want a man who can cry. I don’t want bravado. I want someone who is humble, gentle, and quick to repent.

We over-romanticize calling, as if it’s something we should naturally desire. Moses gave excuses. Gideon doubted and asked for a sign. Jonah fled. Jesus asked for his cup to pass. Calling often looks more like an unwanted cross to carry than a choice to consider.

I hear White Christians say “pray for revival.” I’m sad that we primarily see the problem “out there” instead of in here. Most of us aren’t in close proximity to anyone outside our churches to realize the damage we’ve caused. We cannot expect revival until we pray for repentance.

Pastors, one way you can shepherd the singles in your church is by affirming our singleness. Please do not categorize singles as the “not yet married.” Regardless of your intentions, this insinuates we are not whole unless we marry.

Singles with one income are more vulnerable financially yet spend a greater amount of finances on married friends + their children than vice versa. For relationships to be healthy, mutuality is important. We must create ways of caring for single people, including financially.

One of the ways we become like Jesus is by listening to people who feel like “the other:” The disabled. Minorities. LGBT people. Singles. Prisoners. Immigrants. The elderly. This is not liberalism. This is following in the steps of a Jewish carpenter from Nazareth.

There were 600 people at my Dad’s funeral yesterday. Close to 300 have watched the service online. My mom, sister, and I greeted people for over two hours after the service. The line was wrapped around the building. The main theme was, “he made me feel loved and important.”
