My favourite AITA post will always be the girl who threatened to evict her mom and stepdad when her clueless asshole stepdad tried to force her to pay rent to live in the house she inherited from her father
Just the perfect degree of fuck around and find out
As an adoptee I really hate the "just give the baby up for adoption" line from forced birthers
Let's ignore the still extremely relevant point that the existence of a uterus does not make you a publicly available incubator
and talk about adoption and it's flaws
Piers Morgan acts like Meghan Markle left him for Prince Harry
His wife who he's been married to since before Harry and Meghan got together, treats Meghan like she was the other woman
and it is all in both of their heads
PSA:
We are replacing an ableist term with the term "dead angle"
It means a spot in your periphery you cannot see or an area not covered by CCTV
You all probably already know what term I'm replacing so I'm not even gonna tell you
Dead angle, use it til other people conform
In case you were unaware and in my experience many of you are unaware
If a marginalized person tells you about an incident where they were discriminated against and how that hurt them
& you respond with "oh they probably didn't mean it that way"
You are gaslighting them
My doctor: You got your BA and your MA so you can clearly focus
Me: A lot has happened since then
MD: ADHD isn't progressive
Me: yeah but I had a fucking breakdown and destroyed all my trauma hypervigilance and coping skills
MD: oh
The reason I'm not talking about "the good men" is because
A.) They are not victims in this
B.) If you are a good man, you don't seek accolades for not being a rapey bastard
C.) As Matt Damon exemplifies in terms of systemic misogyny "the good men" are often complicit
After a worldwide search of blind and low vision actresses, Aria Mia Loberti — who is blind — will make her acting debut as Marie-Laure, the star of All The Light We Cannot See, an epic four-part limited series that will be released with audio descriptions.
News outlets: How a prop gun can kill someone...yada yada science of blanks
Prop master union: yeah it was a real bullet because the production hired an unqualified nonunion prop guy to save money

It sounded like he’d been enjoying the “free house” for a while before pulling that bullshit
Like, she already knew he was messy before he pulled that shit
Just didn’t realize he wasn’t as calculated as he thought himself to be in that moment
I am an adult with cerebral palsy who deals with chronic pain and an increased risk of serious injury because I was regularly pushed beyond my limits or physical comfort as a child
I really need to remind the general public that it has only been about 50 years (if that) since it has become expected for parents to raise their disabled children in the community instead of just depositing us in institutions at birth (or discovery of disability)
I hate adults who are like “young people don’t understand 9/11” which is happening a lot right now
What young people don’t have is that shared experience of cultural trauma that happened when the towers fell
And I don’t know why you’d wish that on them
Do not talk to me about adoption being an alternative to abortion ever, it's gross
but also don't uplift adoption as some ideal when there are thousands of children being shuffled around foster care
My first visceral reaction was "How the hell did no one realize she was pregnant until she went into labour, she lived in a care facility staffed by medical personel" but then reality reasserted itself and I knew why \
People can go into adopting a child for all the wrong reasons and the system does not even try to control for it
Sure there are home studies, you need references but you can still be handed a child who you just want to fulfill some personal saviour fantasy of your own
I think even more so than with biological parents. adoptive parents go into having children for the wrong reasons
They want to save some poor unfortunate soul
They want to make a statement about their (usually Christian) faith
But seriously what an utterly ridiculous idea that the experience of ADHD and how it impacts your life will remain static the whole time is objectively nonsense
@kantbemyself
@popelizbet
full Cinderella evil step parent bad
but he only tried to pull some shit bio parents pull on their actually dependent children all the time
so it's refreshing to see that hatred of youth behaviour get an immediate and righteous comeuppance
A disabled child is forced to self soothe because medical professionals have not figured out how to make this repeated experience in her life not entirely terrifying so that she must associate something that brings her joy (singing) and link it inextricably from trauma

@brianlilley
They are to stop visually impaired people from walking into traffic because the curb cut stops them from knowing where the street starts.
It exists to accommodate visually impaired people who lost accessibility to make the world more accessible to people with limited mobility
but as the adopted child who turned out to be disabled either being undiagnosed at birth or more likely falling down the basement stairs as a baby
I had all of the added expectations of the fantasy of the adopted child and I really did not meet expectations
and this resulted in a lot of abuse that included physical violence, which as far as I know none of my siblings experienced
My eldest sister didn't speak to me for months after I told her dad hit me
In addition to my mother's intractable expectations around public behaviour (I'm autistic so I did not and could not live up to these), her academic expectations (I again did not measure up, I was supposed to just get over having cerebral palsy (not medically possible)
In a completely unsurprising turn Britney Spears has been free of her conservatorship for about 15 seconds and people are already questioning her entirely predictable decisions
#FreeBritney
It opens with a reference to the ill fated Rolling Stone University of Virginia gang rape story.
What this has to do with Allen is unclear.
The Rolling Stone article is however a case of bad reporting on rape allegations which is relevant to Stephens piece specifically
How Apt
It really does boil dpwn to people just not caring for disabled people combined with the cognitive dissonance of firmly believing that disabled people are in fact culturally valued
and while the "lucky" adoptees move on to uncertain futures with parents whose motives might or might not be ideal. There are thousands of children still in the system in even more tenuous situations
Please always defer first to disabled people
yes even if it is specifically about a nonverbal disability
disabled people who can talk are still going to know if something is oppressive better than a parent who has never been disabled
but in reality violence and other horrible things are common occurrences in the lives of disabled people
The world just has a policy of "out of sight out of mind"
and boy is it ever easy to keep us out of sight
How does pearl clutching handle the reality that 83% of disabled women will experience sexual violence in our lifetimes?
Do you even know the rates we experience other forms of abuse
People don't like to hear that bad things happen to disabled people and they'll clutch their pearls every time a story comes out but they always think things like this are anomolies
I am so confused by the claim that the average period involves only 3-4tbsps (45-60ml) of blood
But period products often claim to absorb up to 30ml
Hygiene aside, I’ve never had a period that could have been fully dealt with by 2 products over the week
Hello, I see that you asked "but what about paper/glass/silicone/metal/pasta straws
You are person 1986473658 to ask that question
Your question may be answered in the order it was received
Or you could just read one of the thousands of explanations on why those don't work
Disabled children deserve to be celebrated for the people that they are not mourned as the nondisabled children that you expected but who never existed
So to recap
You don't need to be accused by many for allegations to be credible
regardless Allen has exhibited a pattern of behaviour that put Dylan's accusations into context
Also, know that there is a real and deeply ingrained prejudice in society against disabled people
expectant parents saying shit like
"we don't care if it's a boy or a girl we just want the kid to be healthy"
is just the tip of the ice berg
um hi ableds, can we talk about disability and yoga for a minute?
Ok, first off it is never ok to give unsolicited medical advice to disabled people ever
Please stop doing this in general
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk
Just kidding there's more
but it cannot be ignored that people are uncomfortable with seeing Jirau in a bra not because she is generically disabled
They are uncomfortable because she has Down Syndrome and do not see adults with intellectual disabilities as adults
Parenting advice for disabled kids is largely crowd sourced
and no one really listens to disabled people when we say certain things are harmful
You'd all rather defer to a parent
My experience of growing up disabled can probably be summed up with the following anecdote
My mother to 30-year-old me: "I just realized why it takes you longer than other people to put on your shoes"
(I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when I was 1)
Just watched a video of a plastic surgeon explaining why you shouldn't use the diabetes drug Ozempic for weightloss & he went through all the science and the risks, that its use is causing shortages for people who need it
then he just capped it off with
it will make you ugly
That woman who tackled a black child because she assumed that he stole her phone (she left it in an Uber)’s lawyer is claiming she did the violent racist thing because she has anxiety
As someone with a severe panic disorder, I would just like to remind you that this is bullshit
I would really love to see
@TheOnion
or hell even a perfectly serious publication write an article with all the bullshit sweet syrupy things society thinks it believes about disabled people next to cold hard facts about our actual reality
I just watched Andrew Yang’s presidential campaign ad about his autistic son
Both the terms illness and special needs were used
The child is framed as a burden
I didn’t get the MMR vaccine until I was 10 but my mother has the same “regression” narrative
I suspect autistic “regressions” are just that until about 3 or 4 kids’ autisticness is masked by the universal truth that
Toddlers are weird
“You all heard about what happened today … We are reminded there's nothing guaranteed about our democracy, nothing guaranteed about our way of life. You have to fight for it, defend it and earn it by voting." - Biden
When deinstitutionalization happened, parents weren't prepared, they did not know what they were doing and I'm sorry I'm gonna offend a lot of people here most still don't
@UnclePaulEMath
@JessicaValenti
Because 2000 years ago ultrasounds didn’t exist so they simply assume Jesus would rock up to the 21st century still riding a donkey
Saying someone has overcome their disability if that person has not in fact somehow become nondisabled is really just saying that you consider disability and competence to be mutually exclusive concepts
Please understand that pretty much every parent (with few exceptions) who gets a disabled child has to go through finding out that they got a kid that they didn't want
and then they have to keep and raise that kid
and you think prejudice doesn't make an appearance?
The more you think about pain, the more it hurts, an expert hypothesizes. To help kids with a rare pain syndrome, he's offering a paradoxical cure:
"Put them in pain to get them better."
It might just be an innocuous milestone, the gaining of a new skill or it may be the beginning of a lifetime of unreasonable expectations and long term consequences
We just don’t know
In either case it has no place making the rounds on the internet
I've seen a lot of physically disabled people posting sexy pics in response to the Sofia Jirau Victoria's Secret modelling backlash
and it makes me really uncomfortable
Of course no one realized that woman was pregnant until she was in labour
No one would even have considered that she or anyone else in that facility might be harmed
That sort of thing just doesn't happen to disabled people after all
No one could be that horrible
"the charges
#MeToo
has leveled against men such as Harvey Weinstein or Kevin Spacey are almost certainly true. The reason they have not been spared is because they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The facts, not the allegations, prove it."
um really?
It's also really important to contextualize Pratt's comments in the misogynist history of blaming mother's if their children are disabled. That it has been seen as a moral failing
Despite attempting to appear reasonable by presenting Spacey and Weinstein as clearly guilty.
His primary defence of Allen is that he was neither tried or convicted of assaulting Dylan
Seriously, people can you please stop telling marginalized people to subjugate their trauma in favour of assuming that the person had good or neutral intentions.
Not only bc you might be fucking wrong but also who cares about their intentions
They were a discriminatory asshole
I don’t know what led up to this video and neither does anyone but that little girl and that is precisely why it shouldn’t be fodder for inspiration and manufactured good feels on the internet.
"Journalist" Sees a tactile strip on a curb cut. Doesn't know what it is.
Does he look it up? No
Does he see it's integration into the curb cut and assume it's an additional access feature: No
He decides it's for nondisabled people who are still inferior to him somehow
Colin Powell’s death is interesting because of how often people’s deaths involving COVID are dismissed because they had a pre-existing condition
But in Powell’s case the media keeps highlighting that he was fully vaxxed while ignoring or downplaying the fact that he had cancer
PSA: Many disabled people who use Identity First Language (IFL) like disabled person as opposed to Person First Language (PFL) Person with a disability do so because they view disability as a valid part of their identities
They are not necessarily using social model rhetoric...
I am so fucking sick of people justifying views that harm disabled people by saying
"yeah, I'm disabled too"
The harm doesn't disappear just because you are a member of the group you are harming
Considering one of the goals here is to switch from emission causing gas inhalers to non emission powder inhalers, I can’t comprehend why the messaging is targeting patients
Put that responsibility on doctors FFS
Where it becomes a relatively benign suggestion
Elon Musk is the worst kind of autistic white boy
He has an entitlement complex which during the pandemic has seen him endanger his employees.
Claim that he was making respirators (he wasn't)
