For those unfamiliar with American history, my nation (Lakota) was still resisting colonization in the late 1800s. My grandpa’s grandpa fought in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. My grandma’s father remembered Wounded Knee. My grandparents weren’t born American citizens. 1/

“Ed is illiterate” probably comes from him signing with an X, but X-marks are a huge topic in Indigenous Studies. When treaties were signed, signers used the X-mark. The X doesn’t mean one agrees to the terms but that there’s no other choice. An X is the final act of survival.

Yes, we killed the settlers who invaded our space. We did so because it was either us or them, and that’s the brutal truth of it. When the government defined our borders, it chipped away at our ability to find enough bison to sustain us. We had to eat. And so we had to defend.

The bison were dying out and moving north to avoid the smell of death on the Oregon Trail. The Powder River Country was one of our most important hunting grounds. The space we gave the bison to repopulate was disrupted by the road the miners illegally built. So we fought back.

This is not a distant past. South Dakota contains four of the poorest counties in the nation. Child theft was at its peak in the 1970s, as was the sterilization of women. Boarding schools still exist. We are killed and imprisoned at rates only matched by the black population.

Battles were fought with some decisive victories. When the 1868 Treaty came, my ancestors thought ahead. They assured that their progeny would have access to health care. They knew the bison were disappearing, and negotiated for goods. We just didn’t know it was by design.
