Here's a scene I animated from the first Futurama ep I directed, "Parasites Regained," where Zoidberg hallucinates. Normally just our FX anim is done in house, but occasionally we get to do character stuff. I basically did this without asking and showed it to Peter Avanzino.

The advice I like to give storyboard artists who are struggling with thumbnails is to not worry about the first pass. So many times artists are beating themselves up trying to get it right the first time, and the time spent planning results in less time doing.

Someone really needs to make a documentary about Fox ADHD. That place was bonkers. The people who ran that studio really had an eye for talent. It just came and went. I don’t think I’ve worked for another studio where it felt like all the weird kids were welcome.

Besides the obvious desire to get the cheapest labor possible, the unforeseen outcome of outsourcing is the destruction of institutional knowledge. You end up with more people in charge who come up through the system, not knowing how to make the product.

This is all because of greed. Companies wanted to grow faster than they could earn. Deregulation forced smaller financially solvent companies into a “sell, or get crushed” situation. Top brass wants to extract whatever value they can before they escape.

In order to pay off those debts, studios have had to take bigger and bigger gambles in order to get those giant payoffs, but lately they have been losing a lot more than winning. They could stay the course and inevitably go bankrupt, sell portions of the company to pay off debt…

In 2010 the economy was still recovering, it was over a year since my first and only animation job. UI was running out. Things looked bleak. Luckily, I landed a job on this show and it kept a roof over my head. Can’t believe that it both lasted 14 years AND that it’s really over.

Cleanup is done overseas. The animation is done in Harmony and then each level is exported as TGA files with field guides and labels. Then we fill out an x-sheet with labeled keys and call for inbetweens for our overseas vendors to use. In this case it was Digital eMation.

Here’s a time lapse first thumbnail pass I did when I was on Duncanville. The sequence was about 2 1/2 script pages. I did this in 15 minutes. Sometimes I’ll draw shots out of order. It’s easier for me to draw key scenes first and bridge them or work backwards.

For the panning BGs, I didn't use motion layers because I hate them. I made video tracks which contained the drawing layers and panned them using the transform tool. It's a neat trick to get more than one timeline and be able to re-time your acting without affecting the pans.

I think its really important to share anim career struggle stories. Most schools and even online programs don't like centering those stories because it doesn't help them fill class rooms. Getting an animation job out of school at 22 or 23 is not fucking normal.

Appreciate this write up on the Futurama episode I directed paying homage to Dune. If it weren’t for the necessary research, I would not have watched Dune: Part One, and unless I direct an episode based on part two, I won’t watch part two because part one did nothing for me.

When it comes to boarding, my least favorite part is the first thumb pass. I like to tinker with and redo my shots and find ways to improve them, and the more time I spend on the first pass, the last time I have to do the fun stuff that I really want.

I genuinely think going into the future, art that looks imperfect, grungy, and overall harder to replicate will start getting more eyeballs as AI shoots for hyper realism.

I think it’s reflective of how people look at media now. It’s going to be harder for a show like Futurama to exist in a modern media landscape where you can’t just be a sitcom anymore. Laughter is too cheap. People want something more out of their TV comedies.

Since all that matters are the shots themselves, and nobody sees it but me, I try to finish my first pass as quickly as possible. This means chicken scratch thumbnails, barely legible layouts, popsicle people. Speed is the goal here.

Last thing. I understand that throwing shit at the canvas can be a rough feeling to get over. It’s hard seeing your own mistakes. Boarding like this can take time, experience and confidence building, but I’ve been doing shitty first passes for a decade now and I work consistently

My 2024 goal is to hunker down and start animating my own stuff again. I feel like, professionally, there is no gig out there that will give me any sense of creative euphoria. No amount of brand prestige or franchise clout will make me feel like I am doing something special.

If I second-guess myself, I don’t feel bad erasing drawings because it took seconds to doodle them. If there’s a shot I can’t figure out, I will put down whatever shot I can just to bridge the gap and move on. There’s a good chance a shot I come up with later will solve that.

an advantage to having this rough blueprint is now I can go back to the first shot with fresh eyes, knowing how it’s supposed to end, and that informs my shot choices when I attempt to improve upon the board.

@aalong64 I don’t see any other outcome right now than total collapse, and maybe that needs to happen. All the big studios are saddled with billions in debt due to decades of mergers and acquisitions, and they are still trying to buy/sell. It’s going to be a biggest fool scenario.

I get it that platforms are king now, but they aren’t as ubiquitous as people think, so when someone tells me to support a piece of media, and the only way I can do it is pay a monthly subscription to the only platform it exists on, it makes me wince a little.

Echoing what other artists have said in the past about keeping page count to a minimum and reducing pencil mileage by not writing in so many crowds and riots, I would greatly appreciate it if more showrunners did not insist on so many check-ins. It only slows things down.

My second pass is another round of shitty thumbs. After that, I take it into SB Pro for my third and final pass, where I keep myself open for minimal changes, but for the most part try to keep everything locked in.
