1/ Tonight, hundreds of our colleagues are putting on
#MetGala2022
, one of the most glamorous nights of the year. But the Met Gala’s sparkle comes from our sweat. We’ve been waiting for union recognition for over a month.
New: The Condé Nast union is launching a 24-hour walkout tomorrow in protest of what they claim are regressive bargaining practices. VF, Vogue, GQ, etc. in work stoppage mode, on Oscar noms day
We want to create a better, more equitable workplace at
@condenast
. So today we're uniting in solidarity to
#UnionizeConde
. We ask management to swiftly and voluntarily recognize our union. Find out more about supporting our union at
Our longest yeah boy ever: Nearly 400 of us have pledged to STOP WORK when our bargaining committee calls for a 24 hour walk out. RT to tell
@CondeNast
you stand with workers: stop breaking the law, stop union busting, and stop the layoffs. Keep your eyes here for more soon.
Last night, the
@nytimes
posted a graphic listing
@CondeNast
as a company offering access to abortion services they may not be able to obtain in their state. This isn’t 100 percent true.
Over 400 of our members have walked off the job over
@CondeNast
’s unlawful handling of layoff negotiations and bad-faith bargaining. Instead of covering the
#Oscars2024
nominations, we’ll be out at the picket line.
Last week, we flooded the Condé Nast slack with messages about our coworkers who work on contracts, how important they are, and how much terminating their contracts will negatively impact our work. How do you think Condé responded?
WE ARE READY TO STRIKE! With the
#MetGala
only 6 days away, the workers behind Condé Nast’s iconic brands are fed up with management’s laser-focus on layoffs and insulting contract proposals—such as a laughably low minimum salary proposal that won’t go into effect until next year
2/ We deserve to be fairly compensated for our around the clock work, and we deserve to do the work we’re proud of without fear of losing our jobs, working without healthcare, or working overtime without pay.
It’s been two weeks since we went public with our union. That’s ⏰ 14 days ⏰without a response from management. Here are 14 reasons why we’re demanding immediate union recognition:
While Anna and her millionaire friends get ready for the
#MetGala
, the workers who create all of
@CondeNast
’s award-winning content are still fighting for a fair contract! After a year of bargaining, Anna still hasn’t shown up to the table. So today, we’re coming to her!
.
@CondeNast
needs to recognize our union now without further delay. May this year’s
#MetGala
and the years ahead be dressed in a different kind of history.
3/ Yesterday, we donned a different red on International Workers Day while out in full force with workers from across the city fighting for dignity, rights and protections. It was a beautiful day to celebrate our union and uplift our demand for recognition
#CondeUnion
We’ve called this out before, but it reinforces the idea that full-time employees are granted their bodily autonomy as protected by a corporation whereas hourly workers are not.
Most excitingly, our permalancers who have been at Condé for over a year now have official union protections. The incredible
@newyorkerunion
paved the way for this win! 4/7
This card count is the formal recognition of our union, though we’ve been acting like one since day one. Our 500+ members and our 15K public petition supporters have helped us reach this milestone. 2/7
While the Supreme Court planned to overturn Roe v. Wade last night, there was also a fashion party called the Met Gala where permalancers, videographers, & editors worked overtime to make Condé Nast videos. On social media, they all went uncredited: but that changes today➡️
This week, we found out a number of our valued contract workers (who do the SAME work as regular full-time staff) have been terminated right before the one year mark when they become eligible for the union. This is blatant union-busting, and we won’t stand for it.
After 5+ months of relentless organizing efforts, our card count showed that we reached a supermajority of Condé employees who have signed on to our union. We won in a landslide! 3/7
Like many benefits offered to staff members, this was not extended to our permalance employees. They were not even sent the email announcing this company benefit, though many have been working for Condé for several years.
We’re ready to fight for job security, better benefits, and higher wages. We are finally joining our
@newyorkerunion
,
@p4kunion
,
@ars_union
, and
@wiredunion
colleagues in having a say in our working conditions. 6/7
+An Invisible Workforce—While the cameras are pointed at the red carpet, there are countless invisible hands making sure every moment goes off without a hitch. These are freelancers, assistants, and producers who work tirelessly starting months before events like the Met Gala
4/We met with
@bradlander
and
@AOC
, who shared their unwavering support for our campaign and our fight for recognition. They understand the importance of worker rights and have our backs as we hold
@condenast
accountable.
We’ve fought hard to get to this point, and every last employee deserves to celebrate our historic accomplishment of unionizing Condé Nast. Follow us to show your public support and help us win the best contract possible! 7/7
But while winning a card check and being voluntarily recognized is a massive victory, it is also the beginning of the next chapter of our fight: bargaining. 5/7
+Overwork, but no Overtime—Making the Met Gala takes hours of extra work from the entire
@voguemagazine
team, not to mention other employees throughout the company. Yet Condé believes that prestige is enough to cover the incredible amounts of unpaid labor.
but receive no spotlight or recognition for their work. It’s the universal Condé experience on an even larger, more intense scale, proving that there would be no
@condenast
—or Met Gala—without us.
We are in awe of our coworkers and comrades at
@WIREDUnion
, who have announced that they will be walking out on Amazon Prime Day (July 12 + 13) unless management agrees to a fair contract.
Despite management promising us credits after our union went public, they would not allow credits to be posted on social media. We will be adding their names in the comments section of videos as they post today on Instagram and Twitter. Follow along in this thread!
Please RT to tell
@CondeNast
management - you’re on notice. If you continue this practice, we will continue to turn up the heat. Watch this space in the New Year.
Today, we took over the
@CondeNast
cafeteria at 1WTC to show our pride and let our bosses know we are not going away without voluntary recognition! It’s day 16 of waiting—spread this message wide to let them know it’s time to
#unionizeconde
! ✊
+24/7 with no breaks—Events may end at a certain time, but that doesn’t mean the work ends. With events like the Met Gala, the Oscars, the Grammys, and more, the all-night news coverage and viral video moments come from somewhere
—the computers of hard-working writers, video editors, and social media managers who have to stay up until the early hours to bring you content. Burnout is endemic to Condé Nast, and events like these do nothing but make it worse.
‼️🎉 We just marched on the boss to stop the ongoing layoffs of our coworkers that are paid through a third party to prevent them from union protection. More to come.
We’re ready to do whatever it takes to secure a fair contract for our members 👠 if management wants to avoid a strike, they know what needs to be done!
Scoop: The Condé Nast Union is prepared to go on strike, bringing management to the bargaining table Monday with a work stoppage pledge signed by a majority of members
Today
@bonappetit
and
@Epicurious
staffers stepped out of a print pitch meeting for a coordinated Lunch Break in protest of proposed layoffs at
@CondeNast
. Instead of the pitch meeting, union members are having a protest lunch in the food brands’ Test Kitchen.
Permalancers at Condé don’t get paid time off. Today, while staff are afforded a paid company holiday, our permalance colleagues are left with one less day of compensation.
POV: You’re late-night scrolling on Hinge and see our profile pop up. “Hey!” you say to yourself, “Isn’t today the start of union bargaining with
@CondeNast
? I should RT them to show the workers my love for fair working conditions.”
In at least three instances in the past month, we were met with security guards while exercising our federally-protected right to take collective action to demand answers about proposed layoffs.
Today, we filed an unfair labor practice charge:
BREAKING: The NewsGuild of NY has filed legal action against
@CondeNast
for surveillance and attempting to intimidate union members engaged in protected collective activity.
@condeunion
Being on the cutting edge of media means prioritizing workers. It's time we have a just and functional workplace, where diversity is truly valued. 7: Condé Nast describes itself as "a media company for the future." And the future of media is unions.
#UnionizeConde
We have kept Condé Nast at the forefront of media for more than a hundred years. We produce genre-defining work across culture, fashion, entertainment, politics, and more. We deserve a seat at the table alongside management.
We want to work in a place where positions are compensated fairly, roles are well-defined, and openings are filled promptly. Where we rely less on permalancing and instill a sense of security, so workers see a future for themselves at the company.
We want to continue to attract top talent, not lose it to layoffs, burnout, or better opportunities elsewhere. We know this is possible because we've seen the wins secured by our unionized coworkers.
We just want to get our f—ing ass up and work, but
@RogerLynch
won’t let us.
We’re flooding the
@KimKardashian
#GQMoty
cover today for our workers who still have no clarity on layoff proposals and no agreement to an open Q&A town hall.
How to show solidarity 💪⬇️:

This cover was produced in solidarity with
@wiredunion
workers, who are bargaining towards a fair agreement that benefits all workers at the magazine. If an agreement is not reached by tomorrow, they’re walking out.
Sure, Anna’s plate of $77 steak and white caprese sure feels like a metaphor for our fight to
#unionizeconde
, but these tomatoes aren’t going anywhere. 🍅✊
Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour has revealed her 'go-to' lunch order. It's a $77 caprese salad with no tomatoes and steak. Would you try this?

Lack of salary transparency—Without formal salary ranges tied to job titles, Condé can get away with paying people less than their colleagues, for any reason.
All 23 members of the Jezebel editorial staff were laid off this morning, effective immediately. As a union that includes
@glamourmag
@TeenVogue
@SELFmagazine
@voguemagazine
, we will feel the huge empty space their feminist news coverage once held. Solidarity with
@gmgunion
✊
We are pleased that
@condenast
has quietly instituted a salary floor of $56.5k/year for all U.S. employees. Like expanded parental leave, vacation rollover, and ending NDAs, this change is a result of our union’s wins, not a goodwill gesture by Condé. That’s the union difference.
Last week,
@CondeNast
CEO
@RogerLynch
told
@Axios
the company had no plans for more layoffs.
Today, rather than come to the bargaining table with new contract proposals, management instead proposed five more names to terminate, and threatened more to come.
Low Salary Floors—Recently, the company announced a new $56.6k salary floor increase (thanks to our unionized colleagues!). Prior to that, many entry-level positions paid less than a living wage, a huge barrier to entry for less-privileged talent.
Few Raises and Promotions—At Condé, a promotion is very rare. Additional work and responsibilities are handed out easily, but new titles and compensation are often nowhere to be found, leaving many with only one option: to leave the company and go elsewhere.
In addition to our overall mission statement, this morning we sent this request for recognition to
@condenast
leadership as well as President of
@CNE
Agnes Chu.
We’re on the road to walking out! A majority of Bon Appetit, GQ, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest, Self, Allure, Glamour, Condé Nast Traveler, and Teen Vogue unit members have signed our walkout pledge.
Rampant Racial Inequity—Despite the fallout of 2020's Bon Appetit salary scandal, BIPOC workers still report making less than their white coworkers, and many of them still face various forms of racial discrimination at work.
❄️It’s union season!❄️ We had such a great time at yesterday’s
@labornotes
Troublemaker School session in NYC! We are so honored to play a part in one of the historically largest union movements in U.S. history and hear from organizers across every industry.
On Thursday,
@CondeNast
executives shared with us their latest revised offer on proposed layoffs—for far less than what they had previously proposed.
Today, we filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board.
LEGAL ACTION: On behalf of
@condeunion
we have filed an unfair labor practice charge against
@CondeNast
for regressive bargaining during layoff negotiations.
if i were a conde nast exec i would simply recognize the union on the day of the met gala, thus earning myself public goodwill and allowing people to feel good about obsessively consuming my content for the next 48 hours. just an idea!
COAST TO COAST: Vanity Fair, GQ, and The New Yorker lunched out today in NYC, LA, and other remote worker cities in protest of proposed layoffs at Condé Nast.
Management is threatening more layoffs—despite the fact they stand to benefit from Reddit’s upcoming IPO.
We’re marching on the boss to demand answers, but NO executive is present to provide information.
Stop hiding from your employees,
@CondeNast
.
UPDATE: Our majority grew by TEN PERCENT yesterday—with MORE people committing to WALKING OUT by the hour! We’re ready to do what it takes to protect our 94 colleagues from layoffs and to win a fair contract!
#solidarityforever
We’re on the road to walking out! A majority of Bon Appetit, GQ, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest, Self, Allure, Glamour, Condé Nast Traveler, and Teen Vogue unit members have signed our walkout pledge.
Today over 60 of us in person and many, many more Zoom marched on the office of
@RogerLynch
to deliver a petition signed by more than 350 of our colleagues and demand - NO layoffs outside of a complete agreement.
On November 1st,
@CondeNast
announced its intention to lay off 5%
