One of my coaching heroes is Don Meyer. He had a quote I love. “Leaders pick up trash. It keeps the leader humble and the parking lot clean”. Let me challenge you this week- pick up others trash, push your chair in after you use it, and put things back where you got them from. 👊
We experienced our first
@12thMan
Midnight Yell practice tonight and it did not disappoint! This place is special and continues to amaze me everyday! Gig ‘Em👍.
This is a great time of year to develop team culture and discover more about your team's identity.
I have shared this before but the fox hole test is something we did as a high school staff.
We learned a great deal about our team through this exercise.
As you can see I am a big fan of
@ThatGuy__Kai
and have tried to implement a great deal of his stuff into our routines. Especially his information on spin data as it relates to each position. He has helped us change the way we take ground balls. Thanks
@ThatGuy__Kai
👍
I’ve watched college baseball all over the country and this weekend is one of the better atmospheres I’ve seen.
The music, traditions, energy…wow.
And
@OlsenSection203
is legit!
Great response from recruits in attendance.

HS RESOURCE MONDAY
This time of the year is a great time to develop/rework your charts and practice structure.
This is a defensive positional checklist we used in high school for practice.
This is our version of a drill we saw and Vanderbilt- we call it Vandy Short Bag. I love it because it teaches cutting & getting directional. This is early in our base running installation and involves 8th-12th graders. Notice the difference in the more experienced guys.
This is a great drill we borrowed from QB guru George Whitfield. Works to help infielders that have trouble staying "stacked". It is also a great drill to teach "hip pops" or change of direction.
This is a screen shot of the defensive checklist I use to plan out our practices. It also helps me to make sure we are covering everything we need to cover and it allows me to track how much we work on a particular task.
We've had coaches ask us about our base running install. This is raw practice video from day 1 with 8th-12th graders working on getting out of the box. We do this at home plate & all 4 bases. Primary emphasis is getting out of the box & getting directional.
Another raw practice clip of us teaching our guys a drill inspired by a drill we saw at Vanderbilt. We call it Vandy Short Bag. Great for teaching the concept of aggressively rounding the base and getting directional.
We put together a "master practice" sheet for each position.
It included our mindfulness training, warm up, throwing progression, specific positional information, and team defensive drills.
It was lamented and attached to the back of a clipboard.
Raw practice video of us introducing our Clemson Turbo PFP drill during our mini camp in December. One of my all time favorites- we borrowed it from Clemson. I love it is- fast and it involves rapid decision making. As you can see our execution is very bad.

As a high school coach this was the week we normally began our throwing progression.
The following posts include the progression for infielders, outfielders, and catchers. The masters also included our warm up routine, mindfulness, and drills.
Here is another good idea... take every opportunity to convey the language and identity of your program.
Brand your player development facility with "messaging".
Below are a few examples of branding we used at Hartfield High School.
A common language is so important in any organization.
We took the time to define the words we referenced the most in our program.
This is an example of words we used when I was a high school coach.
I hope the information I have posted over the past few weeks has been helpful.
I love helping high school coaches!
Please reach out if I can do anything to serve you.

High School Coaches Resources.
In an effort to help high school coaches I will try to post something each week that I believe could be useful.
My plan is to do stuff chronologically... what I would be doing if I was still coaching high school baseball.
I know this is a bit late …meant to post in May for high school coaches. This is something I used for my year end checklist when I was a high school coach. Hope it helps.
Several people have asked if we had a master sheet/throwing progression for our pitchers when I was coaching high school baseball.
This is what we used for our everyday routines. All throwing was built around each individual pitcher.
I have had several people ask about our QAB chart with swing decisions that we talked about on a recent podcast. Thanks to
@MonteLeeCU
for the swing decision idea. I am excited about using it this season!
@MatthewGriese
I believe team building opportunities are important in high school.
This is an example of a "toughness training" program we put together when we were coaching at Hartifeld High School.

RESOURCE MONDAY
October is a great month to work on game day charts.
Below is a game day responsibility/game administration chart we used in high school.
Young coaches just a piece of advice from almost 30 years of doing this- keep social media light, bright, and polite. Not going to solve anything on a 6” screen. 👊
This is to good not to share! This is what I wish I had a better understanding of as a young coach, husband, and father. Taken from The Obstacle Is The Way.
This is the process point scoring system we used at Hartfield High School.
Each inning was worth a "skin"/1 point. A tie would carry over.
We used the process scoring to emphasize what was important to our team.
Best wishes to all the Texas high school baseball coaches who begin practice tomorrow.
Please let us know if
@AggieBaseball
can ever be of assistance to you.

As high school baseball season draws to a close, I thought I would share a few resources we used as high school coaches at the end of each year.
This is the format we used to do an analysis on our season.
I use this during our bunt installation and practice. It is my "cheat sheet" when teaching our bunting game. It also serves as a checklist during practice planning.

COACHES RESOURCE MONDAY
I've had several coaches ask about practice schedules.
Below is a copy of our practice schedule from Hartfield in 2021. This was a pre-season practice in January.
The next post is the batting practice schedule.

In 30+ years of coaching I have seen some incredibly ignorant decisions by state associations but
@AHSAAUpdates
suspending
@MoseleyAdam
for representing our country might be the worst!
Zero common sense and lack of feel.
This is a chart we used at Hartfield High School to score offensive production in practice.
It created great competition opportutnites.
Things that get measured get managed.

You can begin to install your base running into your speed work, conditioning, and movement prep.
This is a copy of the our base running install sheet we used in high school to make sure we covered everything.
OK Twitter…need some help. Several years ago
@ThatGuy__Kai
put out this awesome graphic measuring what happens in the infield.
Seems like I saw one for outfield. I am also looking for something similar for catcher and first basemen.
Can anyone help?
Creating standards for myself is something I started doing my last few years as a high school head coach.
I had it posted in several prominent places to serve as a reminder to me on a daily basis.
I wish I would have done this earlier in my career.
A THRILLER IN AGGIELAND 🎉
@jpalisch11
goes 6️⃣ up 6️⃣ down to close the game for the Aggies.
Your final from Olsen: Aggies 11, Hogs 10.

This a screen shot of my weekly practice overview. I use this on Sunday to plan out our practices for the week. This is an example of our first week this spring.
Most successful organizations have a vision/mission statement. They also have core values or covenants that drive the vision statement.
This is an example of what we used when I was a high school coach.
I believe I posted this before... but as many of you are beginning practice I thought I would post this again. What I used as a high school coach to plan practice each week. Helped me to stay on task.
This has been posted before but thought it may be good to show again as coaches prepare for the upcoming season.

The

program was very well represented today on the national stage at the

coaches convention. It is a pleasure to work with this staff every single day! Gig ‘Em

When expectations are clearly defined, expectations are met more frequently.
