3 rings & 2,000+ wins are dwarfed by the lives he’s impacted and the careers he’s shaped along the way. No one more thoughtful, reliable, and prepared. Grateful to have shared a dugout with you

Ron Wotus, the longest-tenured coach in
#SFGiants
history, has announced he will be stepping away from full-time coaching at the conclusion of the 2021 season.
Excited to announce that I will be joining the
@Indians
organization as an Infield Coach. Could not be more fired up for this new adventure & to become a member of the Indians family

⚔️ Fungos to 1B is an effective old school/low tech way to work on stretching & picking.
I’m a huge fan of starting w/ 2 hoppers (that come in soft & steep like a fading jump throw) & evolving to a mix of line drives, spiked short hops, & on purpose long hops
#FridayFielders
The Giants included in their game notes that Mike and Paige Yastrzemski welcomed their second child, a son named Michael Cahill "Kai" Yastrzemski, yesterday afternoon. 👶
Longo, I’m grateful & lucky to have had 3 seasons to watch you work on your craft. Your commitment to meticulous preparation, regardless of the venue, was both unrivaled & contagious.
Thank you

Fielding & throwing accurately on the run is an important skill for all infielders. Here’s a fun progression to master right-footed on the run plays

Your glove is your landing gear 🛬
❌ Present it too early = stiff, unathletic, slows flight down
❌ Present it too late = frantic, flat, deep, crash landing
☑️ Present it on time during the descent = fluid, loose, athletic, adjustable
#FridayFielders
Putting an object (like a bucket) in the running lane next to 1st Base & 2nd Base can help infielders learn to navigate the bag safely & avoid interacting with runners

7 MLB shortstops acquiring outs in 7 unique ways.
Outs are everywhere. Infielders make the choice to become a participant vs. an observer during every play.

We have finalized our coaching staff under Stephen Vogt, promoting Rouglas Odor to Infield Coach, Brad Goldberg to Bullpen Coach, and hiring Kai Correa to Major League Field Coordinator.
Craig Albernaz has been named the Bench Coach.

My baseball foundation was built sitting on the bench next to my grandfather, listening to a man much wiser than me, talk about the game he loved. Grateful my profession allows me to continue that practice.
Went to watch my buddy’s son play 1B last night. Took this pic to illustrate that all pre-pitches don’t have to look alike to be effective 😂
Here we have 3 examples:
1) “The Adrian Gonzalez”
2) “The 2nd Row of the Team Pic”
3) “The Thinking Man”
Over the course of the season
@mikeyaz18
has consistently minimized errors, controlled baserunners with a strong + accurate arm, taken away hits with highlight reel plays, & received strong scores (OAA, SDI, DRS) along the way.
Yaz is a

candidate.
🧰 Love repurposing old bases into drop down bases.
Ramp up the quantity & quality of your non-groundball work by practicing tags, pivots, & picks anywhere in any format.

“In playing ball, and in life, a person occasionally gets the opportunity to do something great. When that time comes, only two things matter: being prepared to seize the moment and having the courage to take your best swing.” - Hank Aaron

This little guy is only 7. He’s both impressionable & instinctual. What I choose not to say to him is just as important as what I choose to say to him.
Time for my version of Oprah’s favorite things…
I feel like I always get variations of the same 3 questions, especially this time of year:
1) Who makes those white training gloves?
2) Where can I get that machine?
3) What balls are you using with that machine?
Elite infielders are able to find balance between BALL SECURITY & EXCHANGE TIME. This takes mastery of both 1 & 2 handed plays.
Here’s a quick video of 12 year old Brooks alternating between my

flat glove & his game glove in search of that balance

👀 on the SS, comes flying in out of nowhere. Infielders find a functional place to go on every play (base, cut, relay, tandem, back-up). Outs are everywhere
Everyday after grade school I used to follow my dad around the field, sit on the bucket, & flip balls for him to fungo. Today we came full circle & he flipped balls to me

Rapid fire fielding/exchanging drills are a great way to make movements more subtle & efficient. Shortened time between reps exposes excessive forward/backward glove action or a slow/long path to exchange
#FridayFielders
Before taking live GBs, I like to emphasize/repeat the last 2 “pre-field steps” & the first 2 “post-field steps” through a series of different prep drills. This zig zag drill is one of my favorites

Pro baseball is my 1st experience coaching players who literally don’t speak the same language & it has been an awesome experience so far. To a certain extent, coaching someone who doesn’t speak your language is actually an excellent blueprint on how to teach in general...
To continue to evolve as coaches we have to be willing to acknowledge that some of our previous players excelled in spite of us & not because of us. Our attachment to past singular success stories as justification to coach how we’ve always coach impedes our ability to grow
🌈🤙🏾 Hard not to feel proud watching this
@HawaiiBaseball
team on opening night. 8 of 9 in the starting lineup from Hawaii, representing multiple islands & both public + private high schools.
It is a privilege to be in a position that allows you to mold player’s lives & have them simultaneously shape yours. Never take that role & those relationships for granted
Here’s a quick video of 12 y/o Brooks working thru a backhand progression I call BACKHANDED COMPLIMENTS
Focusing on maintaining shoulder tilt, presenting pocket on-time thumb down, mirroring hop w/ subtle glove action, & being comfortable arriving w/ either foot

The first major league baseball coach who was born and raised in Japan finally gets to see his dream come true 14 years after joining San Francisco as an unpaid bullpen catcher.
How Giants coach Taira Uematsu broke barriers he didn't even know existed:
Six years ago, Kai Correa was an assistant coach at the Division III college where he last played baseball.
Today, he's the

bench coach. The story of Correa's rise, his roots in Hawaii and what distinguishes him as a coach.

During non-throwing reps, a well placed bucket can serve as an easy way to encourage/reinforce post-field distance & direction toward the infielder’s target

Iwa, grateful to have shared a dugout with you. Rest in peace.
Shelley, I’m so sorry for your loss. Know that you’ve got 30 seasons worth of adopted sons who love you, are thinking of you, and who will always be ready to help.
One of my favorite parts of prepping for Winter presentations is creating new graphics.
Here’s an illustration on how range, especially at the corners, is just as much north/south ↕️ as it is east/west ↔️
During an on field hitting competition one of our young players was playfully talking crap to another guy.
Player A: “I’m going to call you Kai”
Player B: “Why?”
Player A: “Because all you do is hit ground balls to the infield.”
😂
My late grandfather used to say “2 hops is always faster than your average relay man.”
Obviously lots to factor in & no science to back it, but cool representation of his point here. Great no cut decision by Torres
In ‘14, when I was the volley at Northern Colorado I drove to Fort Collins on weeknights & gave little league infield lessons to afford rent/ramen. Kelsey gave youth softball lessons one cage over & now she’s the 1st female coach in the NFL. Every journey starts somewhere...
