Our lab tradition is that when someone leaves the group, an instrument is named in their honor. Today we had a special ceremony for Dr. Julia Zinkus-Boltz, our first graduate student. It is a somber and serious occasion.

Re this week’s university scandals: @uchicago disbanded sports in 1939 (we were actually really good at football back then - we won the first heissman!) because such competitive college sports were deemed inconsistent with our academic mission. Prescient view 80 years ago.

Celebrating one another, with the team. Truly - that this is my “job” is surreal. Amazing people, amazing scientists.

Celebrating our most recent NIH grant submission with one of our subgroups! Gotta celebrate the submission, not the the outcome. The parts we have control over are done. Now the universe is in the drivers seat…

My advice (in order) is: 1) Find a PI that excites you and will mentor you in the ways you need, 2) who has a set of projects of which the science REALLY (legitimately) motivates you, and 3) that is in an environment that will allow you to have a simple happy personal life. (3/3)

Key to happy assistant prof life? Find a place with good colleagues. Especially junior colleagues.

Wow - reviews back for two papers today. All the reviewers were thorough, fair, reasonable - and critical in helpful ways. What the heck is going on 2019? I am worried an asteroid is going to crash into Earth or something terrible tomorrow - this simply can't last =)

Flattering, but also a little concerning to get such an award from the group today. Hopefully its just a very touching going away gift from my postdoc, Hua, who sadly is leaving for better things. But receiving praise on April 1 always makes you wonder....

Pro-tip: don’t write NIH grants that look like randsome letters. Bold, underlined, bold and underlined, italics, and italics and bold, used at various times on the same page does not increase clarity for the reader 😉
