A 1st in commercial aviation & one of the most distinctive features of the 777X's design is its innovative folding wingtips. The 777X boasts an impressive 235 feet and five-inch wingspan, a bit too wide for most airport gates. 🧵 The Boeing 777X Folding WingTip (FWT) operation.

Incase you ever wondered why the landing gear of the #A380 tilts forward. The body gear bogie is slightly larger than the wheel bay. So when the landing gear retracts into the wheel well, it tilts a bit to fit into the wheel well space.

The autobrake is a function which aims at decelerating aircraft at a predefined deceleration rate without any action on the brake pedals. On #A320 LO gives 2m/s sq, while MED is limited to 2 & then 3m/s sq. MAX allows maximum braking available on the runway 📹baixadoetravado

If you’ve ever walked past an #A320 , you couldn’t have missed the glaringly loud brake fans. For the #A350 , Airbus & it’s partners made a significant reduction in noise by the brake cooling fans reducing it to a humming sound of just 79 decibels. 📹: @aircraftengineered YT

Just like crew, a/c’s also have weight checks Every 4 yrs, a/c is drained of all fluids & weighed. This helps finding the basic empty weight & empty center of gravity On #A320 , a duty free cart of 150kg rolling from the back to front, moves CG more than 5cm out of 1.34m leeway

Retractable landing lights on #A320 extend outward into the slipstream. Not only increasing drag & fuel consumption, but also producing a slight bit of turbulence. The Multi-Functional Runway Lights provide better illumination, ease of maintenance & lower fuel burn

Traditional weather radar only give a 2D representations of the weather. Introduced for the Airbus #A380 , the IntuVue RDR-4000 from Honeywell & now standard for #A350 is the only weather radar that completely captures the 3rd dimension - altitude, providing 3D volumetric scans.

DYK : The Multipurpose Control and Display Unit (MCDU) on #A320 utilizes MRAM (Magneto Resistive Random Access Memory) which stores data bits using magnetic charges instead of electrical charges which allows for persistent storage without a backup battery on the cardset.

The Boeing #777 / #787 unique Flaperon movement. The next time you fly them, notice the Flaperon while taking-off. In a span of 40 seconds, a lot goes on. PS : There are also times when the Flaperon flutters because of this at low speeds.

Weekend Read 📖✈️ In the 60’s, LaGuardia airport (LGA) had four runways. But they were rather very short, with the longest (13/31) being only 6,000 ft (1,800 m) & runway 9/27 at 4,500 ft. The Boeing 727 story.

The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System was introduced in the 90’s to prevent the risk of mid-air collisions. ‘Nuisance’ or ‘undesired’ Resolution Advisories (RAs), which occur during 1000ft separation level-off manoeuvres however have been a side effect. 🧵TCAP
