Climate action isn’t about individual sacrifice. That’s a lie you’ve been told. It’s the job of governments to make climate-safe choices the easiest, most convenient choices to make. Climate action is about changing the world together, not changing our lifestyles alone. 1/
Can we stop putting “natural” in front of “gas”? One of the most successful greenwashing efforts of all time. We don’t call it “natural wind” or “natural sun” - or “natural coal”, for that matter. The nature of gas is that it’s a fossil fuel whose combustion causes climate change
BREAKING: at
#COP27
, the UN Secretary General’s high-level expert group is releasing a new standard to turn empty net-zero commitments into meaningful climate action. Stick with me for details - it’s very good news 🧵
In 8 years of attending climate talks, I have never felt so much like we're getting real about what matters. It's kind of blowing my mind.

Who invented this lie about individual responsibility for climate change? I’m sure you can guess. Who is most interested in shifting the blame? Who benefits most from you being demoralized and hopeless, thinking you have to do all this work alone? /2
A tale of two COPs in Sharm El Sheikh: On one hand a landmark decision to establish a loss and damage fund to address the devastating consequences of climate change, on the other a major failure to finally name and tackle the cause of the climate crisis: fossil fuels.

#COP28

This is an extraordinary turning point for these negotiations that has come far later than it needed to.
Policy makers and investors take note: you will be held to this decision. No loopholes, no delay.
For some in the comments: this isn’t a dismissal of the power of individuals to take action- which, as a career activist, I’ve dedicated my life to empowering.
This is a statement about the myth of individual sacrifice to solve climate change perpetuated by the fossil industry.

Draft text from
#COP28
dropped this morning at 5am. Here's a look at where we stand on the push for this set of UN climate talks to deliver global agreement to phaseout fossil fuels and scale up renewables and efficiency:
@dvlahov
Individual action has value, absolutely. It’s just not going to fix the issue. At the height of covid lockdown in April 2020, most people around the world stopped doing most emitting activities in our control. Global emissions only ⬇️17%. Over 80% of emissions aren’t in our hands
I’m crying.

When environmentalists criticize oil and gas, we’re not criticizing the people who work in it; we’re criticizing the profit model it operates on, which privatizes all the benefits of the industry and socializes all the costs.

Fossil fuels are the cause of climate change. An obvious fact that has taken over 30 years to echo through the halls of the United Nations. That changed forever today at the Climate Ambition Summit. Today is a gamechanger for the global climate regime. The veil has been torn off.
Wanting ALL fossil fuels to be included:

US (?!)
Norway (W Europe biggest producer, ok!)
Australia (guys: Australia)
Canada (yes, even Canada!)
Abatement technology has a role but should be reserved for hardest to abate sectors.
Fossil fuel subsidies that don't address energy poverty or just transition need to go.
This is an economic challenge for both producers and consumers. EU is ready to work with partners to understand what financial support has to be provided to triple renewables and double efficiency by 2030 and "achieve and energy system predominately free of fossil fuels by 2050"
At 1.6% of global emissions 🇨🇦 is in the top 10 of the world’s biggest polluters and Canadians emit more per person than pretty much anyone anywhere else. Pretty sick of hearing Canadian action on climate change won’t make a difference.
Canada has one of the largest economies in the world. We emit 3x more GHGs per person than the global average. If we don't embrace sensible climate policies, why should smaller countries bother?

🧾Only 1/3 of publicly traded businesses have committed to net-zero, even fewer private state-owned entities. Commitments that do exist are poor quality with little accountability. The solution: way more transparency and public reporting, including a public dashboard.

Colombia: when we made the commitment to transition our economy away from fossil fuel production, which has ruined other sectors of our economy, we thought we would be able to bring that commitment into this process. But rather we have been confronted with the reality of power.

it would be silly for Canada not to extract natural resources for energy in the coming decades.
It is unfortunate the UN climate talks once again failed to live up to the science, which is clear that climate action = fossil phase-out. But don't be fooled: this outcome won't stop the inevitable progress moving toward cheap, secure & resilient energy efficiency & renewables.
I don’t often talk about politicians publicly. But I’ve spent years watching

Who is going to triple renewable energy? Those who have access to capital at 5% or at 30%? Where is the equity when we have to access capital with such high interest rates
Adaptation is critical. We need to secure things such as access to water, health, biodiversity and food security. EU thinks that we need to double public assistance when it comes to adaptation financing up to 40 billion by 2025.
