Climate action isn’t about individual sacrifice. That’s a lie you’ve been told. It’s the job of governments to make climate-safe choices the easiest, most convenient choices to make. Climate action is about changing the world together, not changing our lifestyles alone. 1/

Can we stop putting “natural” in front of “gas”? One of the most successful greenwashing efforts of all time. We don’t call it “natural wind” or “natural sun” - or “natural coal”, for that matter. The nature of gas is that it’s a fossil fuel whose combustion causes climate change

Today, we have a: ✅fracking ban for 2024 ✅an official end date for oil extraction in CA ✅a draft public health & safety setback rule of 3200 ft. A year ago, we had none of this. We must now strengthen and expand the rule, but taking a moment to appreciate how far we've come.

You know what I’m really noticing? A lot of blue check marks beside the names of influential men in my Twitter circles, and almost no blue check marks beside the names of influential women. What’s up with that @Twitter ? It has nothing to do with follower counts.

Speaking of cool, hardcore, and fun #WomenLeadingonClimate , @cathmckenna wears her #EmissionsCap while calling out oil & gas for wasting billions on advertising and shareholder profits while demanding billions in public subsidies. High time to tax windfall o+g profits!

China comes in next. 🙏🙏 to our CSO translators! "We are running a marathon together. We need to act. Why a marathon and not a sprint? Because, whether it’s the green transition or climate change, it’s a process. Developed countries need to run faster."

I’ll never stop being shocked that the UN process has spent five decades avoiding talking about fossil fuels while attempting to talk about the ecological damage they cause, including climate change. It’s wild that it took this long, and it’s big that it’s finally happening.

We’re waiting for the actual text to be released but it seems that #stockholm50 might be the first UN conference to clearly recommend the “phase out of all fossil fuels” and to recognise the urgent need for “financial and technical support to realise a just transition.”

Am I encouraged by environmental changes resulting from lockdown? No. Like most environmentalists, I don’t celebrate short-term gains that come along with such suffering. But there are some big lessons for us to take from this moment. Check out my chat with @globalnewsto about it

Tuvalu comes in now on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). "We have been saying two things loud and consistently: one, we must not compromise 1.5; two, we need to strengthen our commitment to phasing out fossil fuels"

Incredible to see country after country line and call for this COP to be the first in 30 years to finally have the guts to name the roots of the #climate crisis: coal, oil and gas. From major producers to major polluters, developed to developing countries.

Those running at the front need to be those with the ability, and they need to provide financial and technological support to those running behind them.

We finally get to hear from the Environmental Integrity Group! They've been somewhat quiet so far. Switzerland speaks on their behalf. We need to agree to global energy targets that include fossil phaseout and see how each country contributes according to their national capacity

Tomorrow I'm meeting with PM @JustinTrudeau . On the shortlist for me: 1. Work together to deliver universal pharmacare for all. 2. Stop taking Indigenous kids to court & drop the appeal of the ruling on First Nations child welfare. And more – looking forward to it. #cdnpoli

Need to peak our emissions before 2024, and a rapid and deep reduction of emissions of 43% by this decade and 65% by 2035. In phasing out fossil fuels, we need a solid push on fossil fuel subsidies.

Inspired by the courage of UN Secretary General @antonioguterres as he opens Climate Ambition Summit at #UNGA78 . No more giving credit to countries for setting targets they won’t meet. No more ignoring the cause of the crisis. Fossil fuel expansion must stop now. #endfossilfuels

World leaders have departed and we’re into the the meat of the negotiations at #COP28 . A (very) quick update from me at the end of Day 3 on the push to finally get the UN climate talks to acknowledge the need to scale up renewables and efficiency, and phase out fossil fuels.

@cjmcgowne Nope those are false talking points from those who benefit from the status quo. Here’s a good breakdown of some myths about renewable energy.

To some people in my comments: The fossil fuel industry doesn’t need you to defend it. They want us disagreeing over the definition of words they use, rather than seeing the political ways those words are wielded. Let’s save our power for defending the people and places we love.

Let me just say it’s f*cked that AOSIS wasn’t in the room when #COP28 President gavelled the decision, and it was painful the way their objections after the fact were “noted”. These are the voices that have tirelessly pushed ambition into this process. We should have heard them.

🔊 1/Good News: Canadian government just announced that any new or expanded thermal #coal project will be deemed to go against the public interest because of the severity of ecological impacts and the #climate imperative to get rid of coal. #cdnpoli
