Getting the opportunity to interview Toni Morrison altered the direction of my life. She was delightful company and loaned me her beautiful scarf to evade the archaic dining room rules at Brown’s Hotel. I will always be in her debt.
Today is the 39th anniversary of the Black Peoples Day of Action. We marched from New Cross along Fleet street to draw attention to 13 deaths and to show this country that we weren’t going anywhere.
4 Years since the fire at Grenfell Tower. Criminality Indifference Obstruction Immorality Greed Cynicism Cruelty. They use time as a weapon. We will never forget.
I am very sad to learn that the mighty Sven Lindqvist died ten days ago. His passing doesn’t seem to have been noted anywhere in the anglo sphere. He was a wonderful writer and a great contributor to the political ethics of antiracism.

Gargi Bhattacharyya and Corinne Squire are important writers, dedicated teachers and energetic union organisers at UEL. It's appalling that the management has targeted them--and others--for redundancy because of their UCU activities Please spread this news far & wide.
Today we remember Blair Peach, Clarence Baker, Misty in Roots, 6 Park View Rd. Michael Dummett, Stuart Hall and everybody who contributed to this priceless report into police conduct under a Labour Home Secretary.
This morning I am devastated by the loss of my dear friend John McKenzie, creative alchemist, bass-player, groove master, wit. His incredible low-end career suggests new angles on the history of popular music in Britain & beyond. Here we were in '67
I met Naipaul on a train once. He dropped his hat at my feet and was very frightened of me when I politely returned it to him with a few polite words of literary critical advice.

Congratulations doesn’t seem the right word for this. Peace to our brother Winston Trew. A moment of bright warmth in the deadly gloom of Brit-town’s winter.
20 years ago today, in order to initiate a “race war” David Copeland placed the first of his 3 bombs in London. He left it in Brixton by the station. His violent acts are not remembered as they should be nor are the 3 bombs left in different locations, sufficiently connected.

where 20 years ago today 48 people were injured when a nailbomb exploded. Planted by neo-nazi David Copeland, who was also responsible for similar attacks in Brick Lane and The Admiral Duncan pub, Soho. He got 6 life sentences.
In the name of fighting immigration, the European Union is emboldening dictators, fuelling corruption, and stoking the far right and the ultranationalists at home.
It’s shocking to think it’s 25 years since Gillian Rose’s death. She taught me a great deal in a short space of time. I am endlessly grateful for that teaching and her example.
Today is ten years since the nuclear disaster at Fukushima. It remains extremely important to remember that event and to track the slow violence of its continuing consequences.

I’m sure that many people eagerly dismissing XR for being "too white” probably don’t even know who this man is or why his participation is significant.
I am extremely sad to learn of the death of Andrea Levy whose London life closely counterpoints my own.
