This is excellent. No more twatting about with multiple interviews etc; if you're invited to one of these, you know the organisation will be a bag of shit.
Excited to introduce the world’s first AI interviewer, gpt-vetting.
With gpt-vetting, you can interview 100x more candidates in less time & candidates get a more enjoyable, gamified, and less biased interview experience.
You define the skills you want the interview to focus on,…
Modern web development: "If you just spin up an instance of Golden Goose on Elastic Clownshoes, then clone the flugelhorn inside a Bangwoosh container, connect to the Zonk using Zonk -commit -rj -hgs.plonk, you're good to go. Chrome only of course"
Wow, BBC reports that the King of Spain has been refused entry into UK and told to quarantine on his private jet.
The reign in Spain stays mainly on the plane.
Mozilla laying off their devtools people is a massive blow. The excellent devtools were a good., non-ideological reason for developers to use Firefox as part of their daily work, & thus test in it & care about it. Moz had long given up on any other developer relations activities.
If you are a JS developer who writes front-end code, learn the semantics of HTML. There are 120-ish elements. Most 2 year olds know 100 words; by 2½ they know 300 words. Have an HTML vocabulary greater than a toddlers'. You can do it.
I just received a DM from my MP,
@jessphillips
, checking that the benefits for the self-employed cover La Daughter and me during Covid. Her genuine concern for her constituents is why I voted for her.
"Ok, as part of your interview test for junior developer, we want you to put some words, an image and some links onto a webpage. We use Node, Docker, Kubernetes, React, Redux, Puppeteer, Babel, Bootstrap, Webpack, <div> and <span>. Go!"
I'm so proud of my son. It's not easy for a kid with a learning disability to apply to a mainstream college by himself (he only told me afterwards) but we've practiced interviewing and handshakes all over xmas, and today he was successful.
Another day, another article by a JavaScripter complaining that it took them hours to style their page, after first saying they don't know simple CSS concepts.
It takes me ages to write ES6 from scratch. That's a deficit in my skills. not a deficiency of the language.
Arrgh.
One trick that made me a better programmer/ speaker/ product person: rest, a lot. That's when ideas come. Read a lot, eclectically, about everything that interests you. That's where ideas come from. And wear groovy shirts.
I hate that there was a threatening Christian fundamentalist on the tube shouting anti-Semitic abuse at a kid wearing a kippah. But I love that Asma Shuweikh, a hijabi Muslim woman, intervened to support the child & his family. You rock, Ms Shuweikh.
I'm old. I don't care about NFTs, or "Web3". I don't care about the Metaverse. Except for some niche uses, I've no interest in VR/AR. For me, frameworks and tooling only matter if they don't hinder the things I do care about: an open Web, affordable and accessible to all.
What a hero. 17 year old Olga Misik in front of Moscow riot police, reading the Russian constitution's articles on the right to peaceful protest, to free speech and how the people's will and power are the most important thing for the country. She was arrested, detained and fined.
Terrifying. Dozens of vulnerable MPs are being duped by the MayMay Challenge, in which they are induced to attempt economic suicide in exchange for retaining their seats or a chance of a junior ministerial job.
#MayMayChallenge
I'm utterly shocked by the number of people who didn't know that every iOS browser is forced to use Apple's WebKit, despite being called chrome or Firefox. And this is *developers*. Apple aren't wholly to blame; Mozilla and Google are complicit in the bait-and-switch.
Terminal screen full of errors. Me to the team: "It won't build for me"
Team: "What did you do".
"I followed the instructions on the readme".
Eye-rolling abounds. "Don't do that".
@slicknet
1964, My grandad (a coalminer): So, you wear a shirt & tie to work, sit at a desk moving paper around, & at 21 you're paid more than I am now?
My Dad: Yes.
2010, Dad: So, your company makes a free product, competing with other free products, & you make more than I did?
Me: Yes.
I am *delighted* to announce that, for the 18th birthday of CSS Zen Garden, I have restored my original design "Geocities 1996" to its former glory. (Some class/ ID names changed so it broke.)
Web Standards are future-proof, and great design is timeless

Aye. Taxpayers subsidised MP's Commons meals by £3.1 million in 2019. At £2.30 a head, that's 1,347,826 free school meals. Cummings' £50K council tax write off is another 21,739 fed kids.
When will the elite learn responsibility and stop expecting handouts?
Bah, no wonder my CSS wasn't working. I was refreshing the wrong bloody tab.
The whole web platform is therefore rubbish and should be replaced with Java.
Mozilla is 20 years old today. More than ever, the web needs a strong Mozilla to fight browser dominance, campaign for privacy and net neutrality. I hope they get their mobile strategy together - but am confident with
@andreasbovens
working his Belgian magic. Happy birthday, Moz!
@AlanFreestone
If women don't want to fuck a weird creep, that doesn't make it "toxic misandry", it makes it "women having control of their bodies and choices". The fact that you think women controlling their bodies is "toxic misandry" reveals a lot about you, and it's not healthy. Seek help.

has long maintained that every org needs a 12 year old boy (or me and him) checking product names and logos. But then, the folks at the Brazilian Institute for Oriental Studies would never have released this logo (now hastily ..er... pulled) which sparks joy.
NCSA Mosaic v 1.0 was released 26 years ago today. It had "Full hypertext support, including using inlined images as anchors". Images could be aligned middle, top, or bottom, instead of just top, & "background color can be set to white instead of grey".
On my first ever visit to my employer's HQ yesterday, I accidentally breached engineering etiquette when I mentioned my computer. Apparently it's bad luck to say "MacBook" in an office; you have to call it "The Scottish laptop".
"how come a church organ doesn't sound like a chip tune, which is also built up from simple waveforms? Well, actually it will, if you remove the church. And if you connect a Commodore 64 to a loudspeaker in a large hall, it will sound like an organ."
@JasonHall369
He is displaying his country's flag - see the hat on his head. But he can't spraypaint an ad for his shop on the wall in a conservation area, and has been warned about this repeatedly whether or not it contains a flag. Hope this helps get your blood pressure down to safe levels.
In a recent poll, 80% of people in the UK said they would not open their homes to a sentient water basin that walked up to their door and asked for shelter.
Let that sink in.
Filling myself with delicious Japanese food to celebrate my birthday. 20 years ago when I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I never dreamed I would still be alive by now. Carpe diem, my little gyozas. Xx
We need immediate support from web developers and businesses that operate online in the EU. The European Commission needs to hear from YOU to understand the devastating impact Apple’s new ban will have on your livelihoods, businesses and customers.
"I do not think we help our cause by talking about CSS as this whacky, quirky language. CSS is unlike anything else, because it exists to serve an environment that is unlike anything else." -
@rachelandrew
preaching most righteously
My lad just received an email saying "we look forward to your place here at the college". I'm so, so proud of him. It was so hard to get him a statement of special educational needs 11 years ago, and he's worked so hard for this.
I think about the layoffs at Mozilla like I think about the ones we had at Opera. The strategy that the Excellent Thinkers at the top were pursuing failed. So, the Excellent Thinkers laid off so many clever people who did what the Excellent Thinkers told them to do.
It's the 59th day of an unpatched Safari bug that leaves every iOS web user leaking data. They can't choose a different browser, because of the
#AppleBrowserBan
, which Apple says is to protect users' privacy and security.
Chromium & Firefox intwend to ship a new HTML Sanitizer API, which developers can use to remove content that may execute script from arbitrary, user-supplied HTML content. The goal is to make it easier to build XSS-free web applications.
Your occasional reminder that if you're refactoring a site to make it accessible, you can't do it all at once, and may never be able to do it the best way (with proper HTML). But every single fix you deploy makes it better for somebody, day by day, even if it takes months.
"It seems the best way to improve web development would be to completely remove the need for CSS."
I think the author of this comment means "The best way to make my life as a JavaScript developer easier is to remove any language I don't understand"
At work, that nice
@LeonieWatson
came and told our devs about screen readers. She answered the Q "what are the biggest barriers that have easiest fixes:
- images w/o alt text
- lack of landmarks, eg <main>, <nav> etc
- not using semantic HTML, eg <div> instead of <button>

I saw a patient earlier this year. She had measles because she wasn’t vaccinated. She had a stroke and will need years of rehab. She’s 6.
