A sellout crowd of
#BlueJays
fans booed Anthony Bass in his first pitching appearance since he decided to amplify anti-LGBTQ+ content on Instagram Monday. The reaction was loud, sustained and unambiguous.

One thing I learned at
#MLB
GM Meetings: not only do GMs use emojis when texting about deals, some have been known to respond to trade offers with choice GIFs
Source tells me and
@ShiDavidi
there is at present no decision made by Shohei Ohtani, nor is there a timeline for a decision
#BlueJays
are a finalist. We'll see where it leads.
Heard same as
@BNightengale
, that Shohei Ohtani is not in Toronto or on his way to Toronto at this time & is at home in SoCal.
Again,
#BlueJays
appear to be finalists and we will see where this leads.
Bryce Harper wore 34 in Washington, now 3 in Philly.
“I thought Roy Halladay should be the last one to wear it ... He’s 34. He represents that number in Philly.”
Congrats to Julio Rodriguez on winning AL Rookie of the Year. A deserving choice.
As the only BBWAA voter who put Adley Rutschman ahead of Rodriguez, I want to offer my thought process to Mariners fans, Orioles fans & any others interested in the process.
Alternate headline: Mets’ Max Scherzer, who has 3 Cy Young Awards and $220 million in career earnings, advocates for higher minimum salaries and restrictions on service time manipulation for the third day in a row because he believes it’s the right thing to do
Mets' Max Scherzer arrives in Porsche, joins fellow pitcher Gerrit Cole and other players as union and MLB meet for a third straight day in an attempt to salvage opening day on March 31 amid lockout.
If Anthony Bass really understands the significance of his decision to endorse anti-LGBTQ material yesterday, a 35-second apology and a refusal to answer follow-up questions fails to make that clear.
#BlueJays
are in agreement with Kevin Kiermaier on a one-year, $10.5 million deal pending physical per source
@Feinsand
was on this. Deal includes some incentives
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said Jose Bautista & Edwin Encarnacion have told him: you haven’t fully experienced
#BlueJays
fans until you’ve played playoff games in Toronto
The Russell Martin ceremony also makes me wonder: when is Jose Bautista day at Rogers Centre? His name should be on
#BlueJays
' Level of Excellence ASAP
Asked whether he’s open to returning to the
#BlueJays
when he hits free agency next month, Marcus Semien replied: “Of course.” He cited the Jays’ young core, their facilities and “the passion of the fans” as reasons he'd be open to a return.
Just because there's no final agreement with the
#BlueJays
now doesn't mean there won't be one. Jays have been pushing all-in for Shohei Ohtani & there's clearly mutual interest. As of this moment, though, there's no final decision made by Ohtani, source told me &
@ShiDavidi
that baserunning by Vlad Guerrero Jr. is just not good enough for a team on the brink of the playoffs
he doesn't hustle out of the box admiring a near-HR then makes a risky decision going to 2B and nearly gets caught
#BlueJays
will need better than that
Aaron Judge says he heard Jordan Romano played a role in retrieving the ball he hit for No. 61. Called it a “class act move” and said he intends to seek Romano out to thank him.
#BlueJays
' lineup has a chance to be stacked. On paper, something like:
Biggio
Springer
Bichette
Vlad Jr.
Teoscar
Gurriel Jr.
Grichuk
Tellez
Jansen
Good chance they add an infielder, moving Vlad back more into the 1B mix, but you get the idea.
Kevin Pillar’s legacy in Toronto will include some truly phenomenal catches and significant contributions to the
#BlueJays
’ 2015-16 ALCS runs
695 games, 55 HR, 14.6 WAR from a player drafted 979th overall
Which means the Dodgers' rotation options will soon include:
Clayton Kershaw
Trevor Bauer
Walker Buehler
David Price
Julio Urias
Dustin May
Tony Gonsolin
Per sources,
#BlueJays
have now avoided arb with Bo Bichette on a multi-year deal.
Terms still unclear but sources said a three-year term was under active discussion this week.
When Kawhi Leonard walked in and
#BlueJays
fans started cheering, Clayton Richard was pitching. For a moment, he wondered if the cheers were for him
"I got 0-2 on Calhoun and I was like 'man, I know I haven't gone 0-2 on a lot of hitters, but they got excited for that one."
For what it’s worth: in four years of covering Charlie Montoyo, I’ve never known him to be anything but friendly & respectful. For example: his response to the Budzinski family tragedy showed how he truly cares about the people around him. Wish Charlie all the best from here.
After last night’s game,
#BlueJays
manager John Schneider spoke with Alek Manoah. He told Manoah: hold your head high, you got us here, now it’s our job to get you another start.
Manoah told Schneider he’s available out of the bullpen for Game 3.
Over the last 5 years,
#BlueJays
have consistently debuted impact homegrown players:
2018: Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Danny Jansen
2019: Vlad Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio, Jordan Romano
2020: Santiago Espinal, Alejandro Kirk
2021: Alek Manoah
2022: Gabriel Moreno
If you’re tracking flights & following opera singers for restaurant news, you’re not alone. Have heard from various execs & agents who are similarly intrigued. Big consequences for entire industry, wherever all this leads.
The last time a work stoppage led to lost baseball games, the damage was immeasurable. Today, MLB teams are even more profitable yet owners declined to step up and make players a better offer. Embarrassing for the sport that should be celebrating its players, not fighting them.
May 31, 2007: Mark Buehrle & Roy Halladay face off at Rogers Centre. Halladay pitched 7 scoreless. Buehrle complete game. Time of game: 1 hour, 50 minutes
Yankees fans booing the home team as they return to the dugout after allowing four runs to the
#BlueJays
. Spotted one fan giving Gerrit Cole the finger and yelling some things that I will not repeat on this social media platform.
With
#BlueJays
down two in a must-win game, Bo Bichette at the plate and runners on second and third, Vlad Guerrero Jr. gets picked off second base by Sonny Gray.
Just an incredibly costly baserunning mistake.
Addison Barger joining Blue Jays in Kansas City today and expected to be active per source
Barger offers LH power and the ability to play corner OF or 3B. Kevin Kiermaier left last night’s game with hip flexor discomfort
First on this was
@JohnnyGiunta_
Unclear who or why, but someone was not happy in
#BlueJays
’ clubhouse post-game. A commotion could be heard from outside of the clubhouse. Wasn’t open to media post-game
#BlueJays
have officially clinched a playoff spot
The Mariners just lost to Texas, sending the Blue Jays to the Wild Card round at either Minnesota or Tampa Bay. Kevin Gausman won't have to pitch tomorrow. He lines up for G1 of playoffs instead.
As Ross Stripling leaves the game, his 2022 regular season (likely) comes to an end. Began the year in the bullpen, started, returned to the 'pen, got a save, returned to the rotation & stayed there
All told, 134.1 innings, 3.01 ERA, 111 Ks, 20 walks. A huge part of Jays' season
Last thing: Heard MLBPA has told MLB not to expect expanded playoffs in 2022 if players miss the chance to play a full 162 and be compensated for the full season.
until a Blue Jays decision maker acknowledges the possibility of a strategic mistake, a disconnect will remain between them and the fanbase that watched the strategy backfire
On the field Anthony Bass didn't pitch particularly well this year (4.95 ERA, 5.06 xERA). He wasn't trusted in leverage anymore.
#BlueJays
' bullpen will be totally fine without him.
Anyways, happy Pride Weekend to all 🏳️🌈
Austin Martin's 21 years old – born the same week as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Between those two and Bo Bichette, the Blue Jays now have three players 22 or younger with a real shot at being stars at the MLB level.
Charlie Montoyo on his ejection today:
“I’m deflecting attention from my MVP. I’d rather watch the game from the office than Vladdy watch it from the office."
#BlueJays
refreshing perspective from David Cone (the second person you hear weighing in here)
why when basically every industry has had to become more analytically savvy to survive in recent decades would we expect baseball to remain frozen in time?!
1st of all, troubling to see Marlins cancel home opener due to COVID-19 outbreak (per
@JeffPassan
). Hope everyone recovers quickly: players, staff, hotel & service workers
Marlins would've played in TO in 2 weeks. Example of why Canadian gov't didn't give Blue Jays exemption
This pitchers' duel was as good as advertised
Shohei Ohtani: 7 IP, 0 R, 2H, 1BB, 9K, up to 100 mph season-high 109 pitches
Alek Manoah: 7 IP, 1 ER, 4H, 2BB, 8K, up to 96 mph, 105 pitches
In 2020,
#BlueJays
fans didn't see their team play a single home game. Last year, the team spent just 2 months in Toronto. Limited capacity. Barely missed playoffs. On paper, 2022 team is really good. Would be a shame for Jays fans to miss even more ⚾️. MLB should realize that.
Crowd stood for Marcus Stroman as he left the field at Rogers Centre, possibly for final time
Stroman went 7, allowing 1 run. 6 Ks, 1 BB. ERA drops to 2.96, trade value climbs a little
If that's his last start with
#BlueJays
, it was a strong finish to a memorable career here
Bo Bichette has played 59 career games. During that time he has 82 hits, including 38 extra-base hits.
In
#BlueJays
history, no one has more hits through 59 career games.
In MLB history, only Joe DiMaggio has more extra-base hits through 59 career games.
Truly disappointing year for
#BlueJays
. They had real chance to rebound from a frustrating season this October. Instead, they score just 1 run in two games vs. Twins & run into needless outs on bases
Still winless in playoffs during the Vlad/Bo era. Last playoff win: 7 years ago
By agreeing to terms with Kevin Kiermaier on a 1-yr deal, the
#BlueJays
have an outfield of Kiermaier, George Springer & Daulton Varsho in place for 2024.
The Cody Bellinger possibility now looks like an awkward fit at best for Jays, as OF looks like less of a priority for them.
Reported with
@shidavidi
last night that
#BlueJays
were making a push for George Springer. Since then I’ve heard from a source who described Springer as “impressed” with Jays. Where that leads, we will see. Will update once there is more to share.
Last night, when the news first reached the Blue Jays, Charlie Montoyo decided right away that he needed to be with Budzinski.
“The moment that happened, my heart’s with Bud. The game? We’ve got enough coaches that can do a good job, so that’s why my job was to be with Mark.”
John Schneider on walking Ohtani intentionally: “Following Chappy’s lead there. Listening to our third baseman, and it worked… glad I talked to Chappy”
Yesterday Matt Chapman was caught on camera telling John Schneider that Shohei Ohtani's "the only f***ing guy on the (Angels) that can hit.” Today
#BlueJays
have intentionally walked Ohtani twice in a row, limiting Angels to one run.
Josh Donaldson
"2015 was a special year for me & this organization. I was told this city would go on fire if you were able to get to the playoffs. Those people weren’t wrong. That was one of the most special years I’ve been a part of. This city was on fire"
#BlueJays
Kevin Gausman calls fellow Colorado native Roy Halladay his idol. Soon Gausman will pitch for Halladay's longtime team
Gausman wears No. to 34 out of respect for Halladay.
#BlueJays
retired Halladay's No. 32, but 34, which he wore in Philly, remains available
(h/t
@DrewM987

I love baseball. Don't mind if it's slow. I enjoy it at the Trop or the Coliseum or Christie Pits. I'll watch Yankees-Dodgers or O's-D'Backs. It's the best
But there's just no excuse for missing regular season games. MLB could and should have avoided this.
Russell Martin's five-year $82 million deal should be considered a success in my view.
Martin was instrumental in helping
#BlueJays
reach the ALCS in 2015 and 2016. Generated 7.6 WAR over four years in Toronto, and also helped shift club's culture in 2015.
After eight seasons in the minors, Yermin Mercedes showed up and hit .364 with a .984 OPS as a 28-year-old rookie. That to me should be the story here, not whether it was ok for an MLB hitter to swing at a pitched baseball. His job is to hit, and he is definitely hitting.
Hyun Jin Ryu finishes his first regular season with the Blue Jays by throwing seven shutout innings vs. Yankees in potential playoff clincher
A strong finish to a great debut season. Ryu's 2020 numbers: 2.69 ERA in 67 innings, 9.67 K/9, 2.28 BB/9
Kevin Gausman plans to wear No. 34 with
#BlueJays
as a tribute to Hall of Famer Roy Halladay
Halladay's No. 32 is retired in Toronto, but 34, which Halladay wore in Philadephia, is available
Big news for
#BlueJays
' front office. They've hired James Click, the former Astros GM who rejected a seemingly disingenuous one-year contract offer from Houston last fall after building a World Series winner.
Click came up with Rays. He's VP, Baseball Strategy with Jays.
