There is no perfect call. The conceptual overlap of a defensive scheme in its totality is how defense is played. Complimenting calls mitigate stress areas in other calls.
I was a HS soph playing varsity only on special teams. I came home & complained about wanted to play more. My father said "You missed that tackle last week covering a punt. You need to make the plays you are in to get more plays." It was a life defining moment for me. Thanks Dad!
Here is a quick video lesson on Box/Spill concepts on the edge. There are bunch of people out there looking to learn the game. One of the major barriers to entry is football vocabulary. There is no universal terminology in football so this is a generic explanation.

Been in a lot of HS this month where the HC has bread, peanut butter, & jelly in their classroom for players to come get extra/enough calories every day. Reminder of all the unseen things HS coaches do for their players!
Shoutout to all the HS football players who won't be playing in college. Good luck in trade school, military, work, or non-playing college life. HS football is special & should be celebrated for being a beautiful experience.

Super Bowl previews are all over the place. I thought I would do something a little different. I re-watched SB XLII. How did then NYG DC/current Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo make Tom Brady uncomfortable? What did the plan that held NE to 14 points look like? Thread
Patriots in 2man - Great technique by the low players in trail man. DB on the single WR side falls into the trail, mirrors WR's hips, undercuts the basic. DB on the wheel takes a great angle to the low hip to undercut the out before mirroring WR's hip to trail the wheel.
4-3 spacing run fits. Very traditional fit mechanics. A couple nice phrases I like in the explanation: "Spill

Khalen Saunders is a 324lb 2nd year DT out of Western Illinois. He got to play Mike LB in the NFL. Look at him move and bend to shed a low block.

Tite front isn’t a defense, it’s a front. Defenses are made of complementing calls not simply an individual front. The interaction and overlap of the calls make a defense function. Much more to defense than one call or alignment.
Dunning-Kruger Effect is why there are so many “football experts” all over social media. You learn a little bit & fool yourself into thinking you know more than you do. Expertise requires acknowledgment you are at the first peak & continuing on.

QB Jalen Hurts just provided one of his most descriptive answers of the year when asked by
@Jeff_McLane
about missing a wide-open Dallas Goedert in the end zone.
Here is Hurts’ full response:
There are coaches who either can't or won't learn x's & o's. Some even hide behind the "Culture beats scheme" mantra. Scheme helps cultural buy in, culture helps schematic buy in. The truth is it is all import. The special coaches build programs that do well in every area.
One of my favorite Bear front zone pressure concepts. OLB from the field side pressures, the ILB in the choke alignment on the TE runs a read stunt. OT blocks down ILB C gap pressure, OT fans out ILB loops to A gap. Nose smashes Center & works away from choke LB.
Pandemic Changes I hope stick around:
1. Zoom Clinics/Coaches Sharing+Learning
2. Improved hand washing practices
3. Notre Dame football as a member of the ACC
4. Increased outdoor dining options
5. Increased care about schools operational needs
One of many reasons we run simulated pressure is to keep RB in pass pro. Preventing a free release RB limits horizontal/vertical stretch on defense created by 5 receivers out in route. Cover 3,Tampa, QQH, etc all get more effective vs. 4 threats vs 5.
Nickle pressure - Show 1 high rotate to Tampa, invert Corner weak. One of the biggest strengths of Tampa2 is ability to disguise coverage pre-snap. This pre-snap sight picture doesn't clearly show Nic pressure nor a cover 2 concept, offense has to sort it all out post-snap.
Every FBS team puts all-22 film on a website like NFL Gamepass. Sell subscriptions just like the NFL does. Distribute the profits to each football player.
I’m way more impressed by a coach (from any level) who has tried a concept & failed who is working through mechanism of failure/discussing the experience than some football observer who wants to lecture on how a successful coach runs their system.
Most underrated aspect of a complete 46 defensive package is ability to play 2 high principles from a 1 high shell. Good example of a swipe 2 man. Jack w/ a butch tech (collision RB before pass rush) helps protect Mike in coverage on RB release to open side of formation.
Keep seeing references to Mike McDaniel when discussing "you don't have to play to know football". Conflating everyman football opinions w/ 17 year veteran coach is both erroneous & massively disrespectful to the hard work coaches put into their careers & knowledge they possess.
Changing the math. Stem from Tite front to field Over. Walk down safety as edge pressure element. Gets 2 off edge vs. freeze option. Tempo isn't just the speed at which an Off. snaps the ball. Pressure speeds up slower developing plays, defense can affect the tempo of a play.
People who say a team is full of nothing but love/acceptance are spreading a myth. Locker rooms have some guys you like, some you tolerate, & some you can’t stand. Setting aside the personal stuff to achieve something together is the accomplishment, it’s also how life works.
@CoachKStern
Develop a big toolbox. Not every player will be good at the same techniques. Saying "this is how be play it" & being rigid will disadvantage some players. Giving them multiple tools helps players pick a tech best suited to their skills. Improves execution/confidence/buy in.
If you play 46 defense concepts you likely have man coverage concepts. Opposing OC's will look to attack outside receivers in isolation vs. those looks. Currently researching double coverage concepts from 46 looks. Off-season is for finding scheme solutions.
Football is compelling b/c we keep score. Most teams end up average, greatness isn’t handed out. Winning demands of a team & to win consistently is a difficult task. Today 1/2 will win & 1/2 will lose. In the end only a select few teams will be elite. Earned always > than given.
1st starting out, visited a UMass practice. Don Brown was HC. He did a pre-practice w/ Corners working on press man. I was mesmerized &he took time to explain to me the drills, why he used them, & key coaching points. His willingness to share w/a rookie nobody coach was awesome.

I’m seeing several coaches with offense in their profile are now following me. I respect your search for football knowledge, I hope you learn something from the website, and I hope your QB gets sacked anyway. 🤣
A player who was sub 2.0 first semester got a 3.6 this semsester. No one woke him up, no one checked his classes, there was no babysitting. Beginning of week HE made a to do list, HE told the coaches his list, end of week HE said what HE did/didn’t do.

Teaching the big picture concept of balancing the pass rush followed by a sim/creeper concept where a specific player is assigned the responsibility to balance the rush. Clear explanation helps rushers know what they can or cannot do when rushing the passer.
Old Fritz Shurmur 5 LB defense concept with a Nose Backer allowing the defense to build non-traditional looks. In most structures the nose cannot reasonably drop to the H-C. Would love to see film of these concepts.
Patriots in Cover 3 - Great example of nail down/overlap technique. When the WR motions to a cut split the post Safety nails down on the WR's crossing route. The Corner overlaps to replace the Safety in the post.
Old okie front pressure we got mileage out of in the past. The crossfire action creates stress. When the Will crosses 1st the guard has can either squeeze inside creating space for the T/R off the edge or fan out and create space for the Mike going 2nd in the A gap.
One tool we carry in our bracket coverage concept is a motion adjustment for stack. On motion to stack we can use an inside/outside double on the motion WR. This concept is very useful vs. teams that motion to create isolation horizontal dbl moves w/ the man in motion.
More 46 package from Rob Ryan, being able to present as 1 high w/ 46 front spacing threatening 5+ rush threats at the LOS while playing 4 man rush 2 man principle is where the layers of the scheme really start to show.
NFL Film Study - Here is every forced fumble of 2020 (minus strip sacks that is a separate study) sorted by mechanism of how the ball was forced out: Chop, Rip, Punch, Rake, and Contact from helmet/shoulder pad. Watch, save, or share.

Negative yardage plays kill drives. Regular D&D pressures can help create those negatives. Being able to call and execute “run” pressures is critical for producing negatives.
Pursuit≠Effort. Pursuit is angles, assigned responsibilities, spacial awareness relating to other defenders, blockers,& ball carrier. Spacing is constantly changing within a play. Running full speed after the ball may satisfy effort, it doesn't meet all requirements of pursuit.
Every summer I review one coverage. I build a binder of playbook pages, articles, clinic notes etc then watch cutups and take notes. Process is all about looking at coverage nuance & best practices to fine tune our package. 2buster binder from last summer.
Coaching isn't knowing terms/mastering lingo. To be a coach you have to be able to help players thru teaching & drill execute scheme/techniques. Can you tailor the teaching to the talent? It isn't a theoretical exercise. Film is the proof. There is no other measure.
Strategy to build a pressure pack, same presentation build a naming structure for different rush patterns/rushers. Allows defense to present same look while bringing different rushers based on game plan. Also can break previous pressure tendencies from that look.
Care about players even when they can no longer help you win because they are people. People matter. The way you choose to treat people is a reflection of your character.
NFL Film Study - This cutup is Carolina's defense in 3 High safety concept. Great study if you are interested in playing 3 High defense or looking to attack it.

Having defensive calls/pressures built to handle the tilt of the formation is a valuable piece to any defensive structure and can be a concise way to speak to players about the formations
5-0 presentation to get OL in man blocking. The B gap mugged player can control the set of the OG while also man covering the RB (take 2 for 1). The Nose occupies the set of the Center. This creates the 3 vs 2 overload on the OT&OG away from the RB.
3-4 for flexibility - w/versatile hybridized players we can reduce the front to space as 4-2-5, reduce&bump LB's to space as 4-3, bump LB's to play 3-3, or reduce&invert a safety to space as 4-4

You have to play defense the rest of your career in one personnel grouping 4-3, 4-2-5, 4-4, 3-3, or 3-4. Which one you choosing and why?

Bucs did a bit of everything in the SB. Here is 3 high Safety with a 5-0 front bringing pressure from the Corner and Nickel playing Fire Zone coverage.
Starting to think coaches may not covet a job where the last guy was fired with a winning record every season, 8+ wins 6 of 8 seasons, played for a national title, won Iron Bowl 3x. Paying last guy 20mil buyout after all that could appear to some as an unhealthy environment.
Peel Pressure - presents as 6 man rush allowing the Rush LB to occupy the OT in pass pro while covering the RB. Dbl A gap with the stunting Rush LB creating the triple inside pressure pattern.

Like this Tampa Pressure if running 5-1 look. Shows as 3buzz w/ MOFC pre-snap alignment. Post-snap helps provide relief to Corner on iso X also helps deny slot fade strong. Initial alignment helps force 5-0 pass pro to increase effectiveness of interior stunt.
5-1 spacing Crossfire variations. Presenting a 5-1 box helps manipulate 5-0 protections from OL & makes crossfire less expected. OL pass off crossfire best when D tips the look, crossfire most typically comes from 2 backer box alignments. The 5-1 helps hide the pressure pattern.
Clock management is a skill that can be developed. You have to work on it. Have a plan, work the plan in meetings, in the film room, controlled practice periods, and unscripted practice periods/scrimmage. Assess in game clock management and repeat.
Concept of walking LB up in sub personnel covering Center stressing protection came up big last night on the final offensive play for SF in the Superbowl. Great way to affect protection by creating 1on1's at the LOS & pressure opportunities for off the ball defenders
Rams in Nickel. 5-1 odd front spacing, Safety drops in strong. When Nickel carries

wheel is a threat to strong hook dropper. This is a concept that can stress an ILB. Here Rams use a Safety in that role, improving the coverage matchup.
