@GMomurder
i’m a columbia alum (sad!) and covered the PolyU occupation during the 2019 HK protests. absolutely no benefit, whatsoever, to staying on campus and getting arrested. from a guerrilla POV you’ve already won @ optics by baiting the cops onto campus. staying to be punished … why
Out of all the clips I’ve seen—this one of Cal Poly Humboldt is the one most reminiscent of the 2019 Hong Kong protestors, in terms of tactics, siege mentality, and willingness to escalate Humboldt clearly studied tactics well.
@zhao_dashuai
Wonderful to see students expressing themselves openly in the lineage of the 1989 demonstrators, great to know the Chinese government has changed their minds on protesting!
“So tell the story right. We wasn’t being violent, we was peaceful walking down the street, and nothing happened as far as vandalism - or anything - til [the police] showed up.”

one guy I met organized 100+ protestors out of Poly by procuring a map of the sewers and memorizing it, then leading groups out from underground. speaking strategically (not ideologically) opting to stay at CU will have pretty unpleasant consequences for students
@JeffSharlet
Was on the scene. Sheriffs started firing on unarmed protestors before a single water bottle was thrown. The rapid normalization of police violently repressing 1st Amendment rights is concerning to the extreme.
@NazaninNour
These are lies & even your own friend apologized to P on your behalf. I was at the party. You write our friends and ask for support often. Maybe because you don’t read much you don’t know who P is. And you smeared lots of people including the NYT to pander to some following.
@waltshaub
honestly it reminds me of CPAC, America First, similar right-wing conferences etc in the US. I have 0 ability in Russian, but visually speaking, very similar aesthetic

this is actually also 100% true for photographers. many forums full of dentists and lawyers quibbling over Leicas and the newest mirrorless kit, meanwhile some kid in Myanmar or Senegal is out winning World Press Photo awards with a Nikon D3000 from 2008 and a 18-55 kit lens

horrified by last night’s shooting in Monterey Park but also appalled at how clueless the law enforcement response & much of the reporting seems to be? 12 hours later and no motive or meaningful suspect description, very few reporters covering with Chinese language skills

I find it very interesting that lower-income/working-class US unis (Cal Poly Humboldt, CUNY, etc) have had the most militant protest responses to state suppression. HK protests drew from all classes but the frontline “braves” drew heavily from poorer kids with nothing to lose
gutted for my partner

So

I relate to this so much. In my dad’s home village in China, where my ancestors fled as refugees 600 years ago, generations of us are buried in the hills. There’s been a tomb with my name on it since I was a toddler. Comforting to know where we come from & to where we’ll return
I spent a summer as an incarcerated farmworker in New Hampshire county jail. Our labor was not only unpaid, it was coerced - we were threatened into with the loss of “good time” (i.e. time towards early release) if we refused to work. Some people sent to solitary for striking

I interned at the Phnom Penh Post back in 2014-15. The Post did solid reporting and refused to coast on its legacy, even after the peak days of the freewheeling 90s were long over. Then Hun Sen’s PR firm bought it in 2018 and it all went to shit. Ignominious end to an institution

as a Columbia alum (I transferred from another Ivy, long story) I really have trouble recommending CU as an undergrad school. city campus means little sense of community (this is common to all schools in big cities), questionable admin, many classes taught by TAs and not profs

Here's a walk-through of Intifada Hall at Cal Poly Humboldt. Mainstream media + "movement" NGOs ignore Cal Poly because they want to contain this movement to liberal/reformist tactics & don't want other students to learn from & take up these militant tactics & occupy buildings.
