LaMelo Ball is a wild basketball player โ ridiculous mid-air pass to Bridges on the corner cut for another spike. Small-ball 5 continues to hum for Charlotte.
Atlanta Hawks Spain Pick-and-roll -- 3 straight possessions in clutch offense, 3 straight buckets, all assisted by Trae Young
- Trae lob to Capela
- Trae skip to Bogdanoviฤ open corner 3
- Trae behind the back to open De'Andre Hunter pop 3
This exchange from Zion Williamson: my word. Grab-and-go rebound, ditches Jerome with an in-and-out crossover at top speed, to the finish over a 7-footer with his off hand. Wow.
By my count: Jaden Ivey with 5 kick-out passes to direct catch-and-shoot open 3PA vs. Portland, all off live-dribble paint (or near paint) touches. Downhill burst looked excellent -- half-court PnR creation or in the open floor
Coby White: just a ridiculous shot-maker. This is up there with the Nowitzki impersonation shot he hit at Louisville, in terms of degree of difficulty.
PJ Washington on defense, guarding some of the top mismatch guys in the NBA this season: 1-on-1, in space, or on the block. Able to grind out stops or force turnovers vs. the likes of Siakam, Giannis, Middleton, Cunningham, Mobley, Jokic, Embiid โ the list goes on
Duke using Kyle Filipowski + Caleb Foster like the Denver Nuggets use Nikola Jokic + Jamal Murray - inverted 5-1 pindowns with one of the guards handling in the slot (Jeremy Roach = Monte Morris)
NBA spacing different/better, but targeting the same spot + mismatch challenges
Full Purdue/NC State scout ready tomorrow, but something to monitor with Ebenezer Dowuona, one of the best development stories in the ACC
Dowuona on: NCSU +73 in 213 mins, allowing 1.0 PPP on defense, per Pivot Analysis
Dowuona off: NCSU -26 in 127 mins, allowing 1.14 PPP
Gonna release some year-end ACC awards/honors in piecemeal fashion โ starting with defense, everyone's favorite subject!
Defensive Player of the Year: Reece Beekman
All-Defensive team
- Beekman
- Mark Williams
- Justyn Mutts
- Leaky Black
- Jake LaRavia
Cody Martin defense โ just everywhere. Guards 3 guys on one possession late in Q3, multiple help efforts, Hornets force a shot clock violation. Arcidiacono and Valentine can't get around him.
Quick announcement: My time at
@ACCSports
is done. It was a positive experience. I believe the space was used to create unique, in-depth ACC basketball coverage. Unfortunately, this current path is no longer financially sustainable. It stings - I love writing about this stuff.
A year ago, Alondes Williams + Jake LaRavia played for different programs. In the span of a few months, they've become one of the most dynamic duos in the country โ more on how Wake Forest utilizes Williams + LaRavia, including two-man actions and post-ups
Bennett/UVA moving Reece Beekman around as a shutdown guy vs. Louisville โ started on Mason Faulkner, moved to chase coverage on Noah Locke, switched to Dre Davis after Davis started to work on the low block/o-glass, and closed on El Ellis
Who was the only ACC player to rank top 5 in the league in both isolation and catch-and-shoot efficiency this season? That would be Markell Johnson of
@PackMensBball
โ more on the point guard's breakout junior season
It's funny -- this is normally the time of year you can run into TJ Warren at the Cameron Village Harris Teeter in Raleigh. And instead he dropped 53 points on 29 FGA tonight vs. Simmons and Embiid. This is gorgeous: 9-12 3PA from above the break.
DJ Burns OT post-ups vs. Virginia: same setup on all 4 possessions
Burns right side. DJ Horne in the slot, Mo Diarra in the dunker spot โ if UVA wants to send help with its two best defenders, Reece Beekman or Ryan Dunn, it's a kick-out for 3PA or lay-down to the dunker
When considering the hypothetical Scoot Henderson-LaMelo Ball: for his career LaMelo is 41 3P% on catch-and-shoot 3PA (25% of his FGA on c&s 3PA)
Scoot, with his ability to run pick-and-roll, turn the corner, beat switches and get a piece of the paint, unlocks those looks
Diagraming the play: Duke "Ram" pick-and-roll
Screen-the-screener pick-and-roll set: Caleb Foster screens for Young, who lifts and flips the angle of his screen last second for Roach, Yves Missi up at the level, Young open on short roll, kick-out 3 for Jared McCain
Quinn Cook shot 49 3P% on catch-and-shoots, 46 3P% with no defender 4+ feet away. He got a great look, Draymond trusted him to make it. This was the right play, shot just didn't go.
Kerr put Quinn Cook in the game for the express purpose of spacing the floor and taking a 3. He was wide open, he HAS to take that shot and his teammates should pass to him if he's open.
Sean Stewart: special vertical athlete with quick reaction time, plays hard as hell, skilled with good intermediate touch and some passing chops, and he's getting better game-by-game. Duke has another rotation piece for this season, and possibly a program-setter moving forward
PJ Washington was excellent defensively vs. Giannis during the 2-game series in Charlotte -- cracking up at how low he gets to front Giannis in the post, which pushes the catch point further out, then takes away the baseline + forces a step-back/fade 2PA when Giannis isolates
Mentioned this after the Duke-UNC game: Mark Mitchell really starting to pop as a back-line/help-side rim protector
With Dereck Lively up at the level of the screen, Mitchell is rotating, covering ground and making a difference altering shots at the rim
PJ Washington as a switch defender in the pick-and-roll โ grinding out stops, staying down on shot fakes + forcing turnovers vs. various All-Stars (Trae, Dejounte Murray, Middleton, DeRozan, VanVleet), Cade Cunningham and Anfernee Simons
De'Andre Hunter moving all over the floor defensively vs. New York: guarding Randle, also operating at the POA vs. Rose โ plus a ridiculous effort to block this PU2 from Quickley, jumping from inside the lane + extension to get to the top of Quickley's shot
Duke scrimmage observations:
Tyrese Proctor in full command - twitchy/deceptive handle, made good reads
Kyle Filipowski - quick decision-making in short-roll pockets continues to be excellent
Sean Stewart - defensive activity, switching 1-5, versatility guarding ball screens
Two things at play here for Duke:
- being intentional with spacing Jared McCain to weak side around Kyle Filipowski post-up
- Mark Mitchell attacking the space: moving without the ball -- being a moving target vs. junk defenses -- and getting on the offensive glass
Crafty two-way sequence for Campazzo โ pulls the chair on PJ Washington on the post switch, then a bowling ball pass in transition for a Gordon layup
With a new roster, Wake Forest has brought pace-and-space offense to Winston-Salem: more on the impact of Jake LaRavia โ as a playmaker and a cutter โ the downhill drive game of Alondes Williams, and an offense that's targeting the right areas of the floor
Even if Carlik Jones stays in the NBA Draft, the West-Locke-Ellis backcourt is strong. Lots of frontcourt options, too: Jae'Lyn Withers, Malik Williams, Matt Cross (good stretch forward), Samuell Williamson, JJ Traynor
Very much here for lineups with Locke, Cross and Withers
Will write more about this later, but really like the addition of Noah Locke for Louisville, an experienced movement shooter (40 3P% off catch career) who can help unlock key aspects of Louisville's playbook
Duke Horns Out Get pick-and-roll for Jeremy Roach vs. Hofstra Ice Coverage - with slight tweaks - leads to Kyle Filipowski corner 3
- Mark Mitchell sets ball screen + short rolls
- Flip spaced to weak-side corner
- Jared McCain roll-replace action lifting up from under the rim
LaMelo Ball drives by Chris Paul in early offense, forces Bridges to closeout to Hayward in the corner, then hangs in the air to hit Zeller for the drop pass dunk
Damari Monsanto's 3-point shooting is at hilarious levels right now: 19 3PA per 100 possessions, 41.5 3P%
Going back to 07-08 season, only 3 Division 1 players with 18+ 3PA per 100 possessions, 40 3P% and 2.0% steal rate: Steph Curry (08), Troy Daniels (13) and Monsanto
Once more โ LaMelo Ball to Miles Bridges in transition: live-dribble behind the back pass for LaMelo and Bridges punches it home with the windmill dunk
Two days later and I still can't stop watching this LaMelo behind-the-back pass the Hayward on the ghost screen/pop. The placement is just perfect, leads GH right into a rhythm 3PA with a live-dribble flick of the wrist.
Another big game for De'Andre Hunter: 19 points, 6-6 FGA inside 8 feet, 2 assists (linked up nicely in pick-and-roll with Diakite), no turnovers. And this is just excellent.
Tony Bennett is a good basketball coach. UVA's first play ATO/UNC turnover. Looks like they're loading up for their go-to elevator door play, you can see Kenny Williams turn his head. Then Kyle Guy zips in the opposite direction off Huff's screen to the strong corner.
Two-way sequence from Amari Bailey -- rebounds and saves the air-ball 3PA from Wemby, which launches a fast-break opp that he finishes with a hustle and-1 layup around Vic
Ayo Dosunmu's on-ball defense is so damn impressive: screen navigation, physicality and lateral quickness
Hornets go with their 21 Flip action, which DSJ turned the corner on and/or forced help all season, but Ayo meets him perfectly and takes away the baseline
By opening the floor up with 4 guards + a playmaking 5, Duke has lanes to drive + windows to pass into and pressure the rim, with Kyle Filipowski mapping the court + making good decisions
Great ATO call: Flip DHO Keep, Roach backdoor, defense in rotation, kick-out 3 Jared McCain
Duke is now + 24 in 16 minutes with Kyle Filipowski + 4 guards -- Jeremy Roach has been a part of all 4-guard groups so far, too
In those minutes: 18-26 FGA (69 FG%), 12-16 2PA, 6-10 3PA, 8 FTA, 7 steals, only 1 opponent offensive rebound
The vision is there: LaMelo Ball + Mark Williams empty-corner pick-and-roll, Scoot Henderson in the opposite slot, bend the defense, kick and let Scoot speed drive into the gaps, with Williams in the dunker spot as a pressure point on the rim
The numbers are impressive and the film jumps off the screen: Virginia's Ryan Dunn is a defensive prospect on the rise and a breakout candidate in the ACC next season -- more on his shot-block prowess, weak-side rim protection and next steps, for

The other day,
@EWPod
was talking about another one of these weird coincidences - the top 4 Mariners in career ERA all have the same number: 3.42
Wake Forest - Punch Hammer - Game-winning play vs. NC State
After-timeout set from Wake: Efton Reid initiating in the post, with Andrew Carr setting Hammer screen for Hunter Sallis and then slipping to the rim for game-deciding layup
Hunter Sallis -- early returns of scaling up at Wake Forest look excellent, so far: 19 PPG (4 PPG at Gonzaga), 25% usage, 44 3P%, 55 2P%, 85 FT%
68 FG% rim
54 FG% / 62 eFG% on pull-up jumpers
1.16 points per spot-up possession
1.02 points per pick-and-roll possession
New to Wake Forest: Hunter Sallis scouting report + fit with the Demon Deacons -- Sallis as a cutter, opportunities to work as an initiator, defensive upside
Shakeel Moore with 4 steals vs. BC โ now up to 16 steals in 116 minutes this season, good for 5.5 steals per 40 mins, 7.6% steal rate. 3 games already with 3+ steals for Moore, 4 straight games with 2+
NC State - BLOB Box Punch Double
With Sean Stewart on him and Kyle Filipowski roaming as a helper parked at the rim, DJ Burns hits DJ Horne with a submarine pass on the curl. Good off-ball action around DJ post-up
Jake LaRavia is gone, but Bobi Klintman will keep the inverted pick-and-roll game alive at Wake Forest. 6-10, skilled, good vision + passing feel to his game
Sam Hauser & Jay Huff buried Clemson under a barrage of 3-pointers, but for stretches of time, Reece Beekman was the best player on the floor
More thoughts on Beekman
- POA defense, guarding screen-roll
- Pick-6 event creation
- 1st step
- off-ball mover
PJ Washington rim protection โ pins RJ Barrett's layup attempt, then swats Mitchell Robinson on the put-back, which leads to the Rozier run-out layup on the other end
Excited to see Year 2 of Leaky Black this season -- intriguing two-way prospect. 2.4 steals per 40 minutes (3.1% steal rate), opportunistic in passing lanes/help situations, long wing who can move his feet vs. smaller guards
After Wake Forest-Duke, Steve Forbes opened his post-game comments talking about this sequence/adjustment from Jon Scheyer โ Duke empty-side ball screens, and Kyle Filipowski + Mark Mitchell attacking the space
Duke spamming empty-corner pick-and-roll with Kyle Filipowski or Mark Mitchell as the screener and the other in the slot - Wake Forest putting two on the ball, when the defense rotates, kick to slot and have Flip or Mitchell drive against bent defense
Jared McCain: 45 3P%, 50 2P%, 62% true shooting
1.06 points per spot-up possession, 1.2 points per off-screen possession, 9-18 3PA in transition per Synergy
Duke - Wedge Pick-and-roll for Tyrese Proctor vs. Pitt
Duke went to this set 4 times at Pitt, scoring 7 points (1.75 PPP), with Proctor initiating every possession. This set generates Proctor-Kyle Filipowski pick-and-pop 3 vs. Guillermo Diaz Graham hedging out
Duke - Delay/Open Scissor Flare, ATO
I loved this design from Jon Scheyer to get a 3 for Jared McCain. All season long, Duke has countered loose perimeter coverage on Mark Mitchell by having him set flare screens for McCain. This time, working off Jeremy Roach-Flip screen-roll
Fun concept for Duke's half-court offense centered on Kyle Filipowski's passing + Jared McCain's gravity
Flip initiating in high post, Mark Mitchell flare screen for McCain โ flare action puts screen defender in bind: help on McCain or open the lane for Mitchell's cut
Duke - Ram Exit Pick-and-roll vs. Miami's aggressive screen-roll coverage
Sean Stewart works as off-ball screen for Jared McCain, Kyle Filipowski draws attention on the dive, Tyrese Proctor skips to Jeremy Roach for corner 3
If you live in NC and don't have cable, this game is blacked out on NBA TV and Fox Sports Southeast is unavailable YouTube TV and Hulu TV. So there's no real way to watch the game. Excellent work from everyone, truly great stuff.
Duke on/off with Tyrese Proctor this year, per CBB Analytics
Proctor on: +105 in 223 minutes, +27 points per 100
- offense: 120 points per 100
- defense: 93 points per 100
Proctor off: +5 in 97 mins, +3 points per 100
- offense: 113 points per 100
- defense: 110 points per 100
Via my own charting, Duke with more drop coverage vs. Baylor than any other game this season - kept Filipowski + Young below the level of the screen, occasionally in a deep drop: guard more actions 2-on-2, reduce kick-out 3PA
Base coverage this year has had Flip up at the level
Hornets - Wide Elbow Chicago Twirl
ATO set with plenty of moving parts, all designed to organize LaMelo Ball + Mark Williams pick-and-roll
OKC stays home on shooters, guards this 2-on-2. LaMelo deceptively switches ball from right to left, gets JW in air, hits Mark
Kyle Filipowski: 0-4 3PA on pick-and-pops vs. UNC Drop or Ice coverage, all on lightly contested or no contest looks
UNC did well swarming Flip in the middle on pocket pass reads, Duke found little second-side options off that. But the pops were there, just didn't hit the shots
Pick-and-roll manipulation from LaMelo Ball โ little jail dribble to keep Lonnie Walker on his back, followed by a ball fake show before he leaves his feet, gets Poeltl off the ground, and then yet another left-handed drop pass. 2-on-2 pick-and-roll creation wizardry.
Reece Beekman back is significant for 2024, ACC and Draft. Connective passer. Elite on/off-ball defender โ a force at the point of attack, A-1 screen navigator, and devastating when he shifts to free safety mode In Virginiaโs post doubles or jams up passing lanes.
Shakeel Moore is a special athlete, covers a lot ground to get up and block this 3PA vs. BC
Moore: 3.3 steals, 0.7 blocks per 40 minutes this season, ranks 9th nationally in steal rate (4.7%)
PJ Washington continues to show his 1-on-1 defensive abilities vs. some of the best face-up/middle-of-the-floor frontcourt scorers in the world โ forces a tough shot from Pascal Siakam, who had an off night in Charlotte
PJ Washington was excellent defensively vs. Giannis during the 2-game series in Charlotte -- cracking up at how low he gets to front Giannis in the post, which pushes the catch point further out, then takes away the baseline + forces a step-back/fade 2PA when Giannis isolates
Mark Williams rim defense has been really impactful. No blocks, but he's influenced (possibly altered) a handful of shots. Covering ground, staying vertical, absorbing contact.
MJ Rice arrives at NC State from Kansas with an opportunity to be a playmaker on the wing -- over
@PackPride
: More on Rice's two-way fit in NC State's scheme, upside, and the different lineup combinations he helps unlock
NC State countering some of the off-ball attention for DJ Horne from Clemson's defense โ with Chase Hunter and Joe Girard face-guarding Horne, Pack clear out a side, lift the weak side and initiating backdoor action for Horne, with DJ Burns facilitating
Oh hello, Mamadi Diakite. Face-up game has looked pretty damn good early this season. Also: 5 dunks, 2 steals, 4 blocks, 7 offensive rebounds though the first 2 games (64 mins)
LJ Thomas is already a solid ACC guard, and heโs earned a spot in NC Stateโs rotation. Can run a pick-and-roll or create without a screen, finds ways to work as a connector and cutter when slotted to more of an off-ball role too
