Homeless man coming in on the coldest night of the year for “pain in my leg” into an empty ER
Me: Sir, we’re very busy tonight, your workup may take a while. We will figure out your leg pain. Here’s an extra warm blanket, I know it’s cold tonight.
Life can change in a second, a minute, an hour, a day. Stay positive, always hope, be patient, put your positivity & dreams out into the universe.
I matched today. TY my dear twitter community for your support. Truly overwhelmed. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Let’s continue empowering those in need!
Me: I’m anxious about Match
Wife: Name 5 things which are more important than matching?
Me: You, My parents, Kindness, Happiness and…World Peace(?)
Wife: You forgot the most important thing!
Me: ????
Wife: You. You are the most important. Don’t ever forget that.

A year+ ago: unmatched, food & grocery delivery driver
3.5 months ago: unmatched in main match, unemployed, new country
Tomorrow: PGY1 resident
Believe and it will be.
❤️
Just learnt of another resident suicide. They were in their final year apparently.
This is your unfortunate more-than-often reminder that suicide is the number 1 cause of mortality in Male Resident Physicians and the 2nd leading cause in Female Resident Physicians.

Me: Looks like a Strep rash
Attending: No, that’s just eczema
Me: Looks like eczema
A: No, that’s a strep rash
Me: The tympanic membrane looks erythematous. Otitis.
A: No, that’s just coz they’re crying really hard
Me: TM looked red, they were crying hard
A: No. That’s
Countless sacrifices
Sleepless nights
Endless $$ spent
Multiple “Just do something else”
4 years of Uber
2 years of Instacart/Food delivery
4 Match cycles
Y’all have no idea how good this feels.
Thanks to those who helped. Not possible without y’all. Thank you ❤️
5 yrs ago: 1st of 4 times I went unmatched.
4 yrs ago: Sat on my dinner table with a pile of benzos ready to end it - my cat jumped on my lap & wouldn’t stop purring. I held her tight and cried as she licked my tears.
2 days ago: On a boat watching whales breach the Pacific
A year ago: unmatched, trying to scramble, delivering groceries for Instacart, managing a warehouse, delivering Uber Eats & e-commerce packages out of my car. Med school “friends” & jobs wouldn’t return my emails, calls or respond to applications. No1 wud give me the time of day.
No1 cares abt ur USMLE score when u r intubating coding patients with aspirate in their mouth, 📞 family to give bad news, placing a C-line in a dehydrated patient or ppl managing difficult staff.
You can google algorithms, you can’t google character. Show yours off. It matters.
Attending: Want to meet at 9am for weekend rounds?
Me: Can we do 930 as I’m waking up at 4am to eat for Ramadan?
Attending: I’ll see you at 10am.
❤️ Blessed to be in such an understanding program.
#Match2024
applicants: Question you should be asking EVERY program you interview at.
“Can you tell me a time a resident struggled academically or personally and what the program did to support them?”
Pay very close attention to how this ?? is answered in content and behavior.
Tips for
#SOAP2023
1. If you get the dreaded email, DO NOT PANIC. Although you will panic.
2. Take the time from 930-11am EST to get through all the feelings. Shout, scream, cry, vent, workout etc. Get the negative emotions out the way as you’ll need the energy to focus.
You can create a podcast helping 1000+ trainees - highlighted on Medscape, create support groups, be a speaker on (inter)national forums, get published, complete TY residency, be a great intern, not fail any board & still end up
#unmatchedMD
in psych. Maybe tad bit bitter today.
Ppl who said I’d never make it now say “I always knew you had it in you”
This post isn’t to brag, but to show you life can change in a moment. Work hard, never give up your dream & inspire yourself to be great. Still have so much to do.
It’s only failure when you quit.
Still having nightmares of going
#unmatched
. 4 years of uncertainty, self doubt, lack of confidence, imposter syndrome, guilt, sadness & shame don’t disappear after an email.
This process eats you away from the inside. Every. Single. Day.

Use ChatGPT to review your PS.
It is a LANGUAGE AI bot - perfect for such situations.
Ask:
1. What do you find intriguing about my PS? What is boring about it?
2. What do you think is missing?
3. What is repetitive?
4. What improvements can you suggest?
One year ago today I was out delivering groceries w/ Instacart and delivering food w/ Uber eats.
In 2.5 months I’ll start start my dream of being a physician. It’s Ramadan; the time to be grateful. Today I am so grateful. Alhamdullilah.
#Match2023
applicants, share how much you spent on applications this year.
I’m looking at $6200 currently.
Let’s highlight the financial burdens this process puts on applicants.
For transparency and equity, I think programs should be obliged to publish their selection filters BEFORE applicants apply for
#Match2024
.
Understandably, PDs wont agree.
Eliminates💰 & ⏰ applicants would otherwise spend on programs that won’t even look at their application.
Rural Family medicine is wild. In one day you can go from seeing kids with strep & Covid infections to Squamous cell carcinoma excision to acutely managing a stroke patient while you wait for the ambulance. I’m absolutely loving this rotation. We don’t give enough credit to PCPs.
Today was the worst day of residency for me. Some days can drain you mentally, physically and spiritually - today was one of those days.
Everyone tells you how stressful residency can be, but nothing can prepare you for one of these days until you actually go through it.
I’m so proud of all the
#unmatched
DOCTORS letting the world know their situation.
Y’all are models for future physicians when it comes to tackling obstacles.
It’s only failure when you quit.
Proud of you all. You are prevailing right now, even if it doesn’t feel like it.

This is a tiny blurb - obviously I’m a whole more more than below but some academic highlights. Please advocate for me. Thank you
#Medtwitter
. I appreciate you. Overwhelmed by the support 🙏🏽
#SOAP2022
If a program expects a customized personal statement for interested applicants in
#Match2024
..
…they better be writing a personalized acceptance or rejection emails.
Y’all ask too much from candidates.
ERAS needs to make a box with “Why this prog” to put a sentence in.
Today: Offers to write articles, participate in research, flooded inbox w/ requests 4 help & salutations, health executives calling to collaborate, ppl requesting my advocacy, MedEd leadership telling me I inspire them & a secured residency spot for July.
Thankful for EVERYONE sending me congratulations. I appreciate all of you so much. Wouldn’t be possible without the love I’ve gotten. I will respond to all of you when I have a moment. Did not realize how many people cared. Overwhelmed with love.
Thank you so much
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You’ve just applied for
#Match2024
You don’t know:
-# of interviews you’ll get
-What state you’ll be in
-What program you’ll be in
-For some, what type of doctor you’ll be
-Who your leadership will be
-How your relationships will look like once you match
-If you’re good enough
Remember the people who were constant supports in your life.
Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
Always stay humble and never forget where you came from.
You too will do it. Never quit. Never say die. Always strive for more.

, I’m Asim, a transitional year intern and a

aspirant!
I am passionate about
#MedEd
, mental health, physician wellness and being a voice & beacon of hope for those unheard.
Hoping to hear from programs that share the same passions I do!
How many applicants have had PDs tell them they’re ranked to match and then not match there?
Unprofessional game played by many on both sides; perpetuated by architecture of match system and dynamics of pre-match uncertainty.

Doctors in
#SOAP2022
1. Fully extend arms above your head
2. Repeat loudly x 5 “I AM AMAZING, I AM WORTHY, I AM A DOCTOR”- let the universe hear you
3. Continue your hustle.
You got this! Sending all of you positive vibes!!!
Can we take a moment to appreciate how amazing EM is?
You see EVERYTHING & EVERYONE. Make decisions in split seconds, recognize disease at a glance, counsel entire families while thinking of 10 other active urgent cases going on in the back. Procedures!
Its so special!
My TY co-resident, die hard OBGYN fanatic, takes all OB patients, volunteers for all OB physicals, tackles all OB problems on floor, has case reports, literally runs OB clinic on her OBGYN rotation got 0 invites today post mass applying.
#Match2023
process is unfair to so many.
Dear
#Match2023
applicants, the time to focus on your deficiencies is over. Now is the time to revel in your accomplishments and highlight your work ethic. You’re all brilliant. You’re physicians. < 1% of the worlds population. You’re amazing.
Let the world know how amazing ❤️
*Note: I don't host the spaces for residency clout. I genuinely enjoy helping people & have a passion for normalizing emotional wellness - negative or positive.
Today hurts. I deserve better.
Thanks for all the support 🙏🙏
Today I learned of 3 year pediatric hospitalist fellowships and I don’t know what else could be a worse financial decision.
No wonder no one wants to go into peds.

Potassium PO absorbs faster than Potassium IV.
The potassium mixture tastes horrible! Go for tabs unless they can’t swallow.
Replete the potassium!
Incoming interns! Warning: Unpopular opinion.
The urge to copulate with fellow co-residents/interns might rise steadily or all at once during the year.
Keep ur pants up @ work. Don’t get into r’ships with colleagues. When it ends, it’s nasty & makes for awkward work envts.

Incoming interns!
Intern year is fabulous because it is the time where you learn you truly belong.
It’s also grueling physically and mentally.
Here are things I’ve learned from the past year when it comes to intern mental health:
How to
#scramble2023
:
1. Take the weekend off. You're exhausted from not
#Match2023
, not
#SOAP2023
& all the emotions that come with it. Refresh. Most programs are not filling their program on a weekend.
2. Collect the NRMP list of unfilled spots; filter programs.
Incoming interns! You have the next 3-7 years to learn medicine. Congratulations on graduating. Enjoy your time off.
Don’t study. Don’t join residency prep classes. Take the damn time off & spend it with family/friends/living life.
Medicine isn’t going anywhere. Your time with

Finally a big 👊🏽 to Me for never giving up, continue to dream & having self belief.

187 - If there is a code call, don’t be scared of being the first one there.
Even if you don’t know how to run a code, you help w/ CPR.
As an attending put it “They’re already dead” - any intervention is a positive one.
Most of the Rads residencies filled up.
A large amount of EM residencies did not.
......who's going to order all the imaging for these radiologists if there are no EM Docs?
Celebrate.
Celebrate that first clean diagnosis. Celebrate that perfect suture. Tap your heels to the praise you received. Celebrate the 90% UW block. Celebrate that step pass. Celebrate that patient hug.
We often forget to celebrate ourselves in this profession.
Celebrate.
Incoming interns!
#ResidencyTip
475:
Before ordering ANY test/lab/imaging, ask yourself:
“How will the results change management?”
If the answer is “It won’t”, don’t order it.
What if ALL interview invites were sent out at specific times throughout
#Match2024
?
Eg. Every Monday and Wednesday of the week at 10am.
This would greatly ⬇️ the constant anxiety applicants face AND allow all applicants an equal shot at scheduling interviews.
8 times.
That’s how long it took Khalif to match.
Should have happened a lot sooner.
This was inevitable. Congratulations my friend. I’m proud of you.
Thank you for everything you have done for this community. This is simply the middle of your amazing journey. God speed ❤️
As you navigate going
#UNMATCHED
, think of your family & significant others going through this with you during
#SOAP2022
.
They feel even more helpless than you do.
Be kind to them and be kind to yourself.
Even the best iftar food in the world can’t replace that home feeling of having Iftar with family and your mom screaming at you to go pray Maghreb before it gets dark.
This community talks so much about accepting failure. Yet, when someone makes a mistake here, they are given very little grace.
There is room for lots of introspection today.
Be kind to each other. Be kind to yourself.
#Match2023
applicants, if you’re in a position where you’re applying for a residency spot - you’re already cream of the crop. Don’t let self doubt get in your way.
You are enough.
#Match2024
Interview tip:
1. Think about the people who've supported you along the way.
2. Introspect and consider what made them help you.
3. Write down those qualities.
4. Emphasize these qualities in interviews.
If you’re a program who’s looking for

You SHOULD know:
You’re part of 0.2% of the worlds population that has the privilege, honor and duty to care of & change peoples lives.
Know…that you’re already enough!
You gave up funerals & weddings.
You gave up nights out w/ friends to relive them on IG.
You gave up sleep & peace.
You gave up birthdays & anniversaries.
You gave up sitting on the floor during family reunions laughing.
You’ve given up so much to gain even more. Don’t quit now.
Incoming Interns!
Some ppl will tell you to “live like an intern”.
You’re going into a position who’s number 1 (male) or 2 (female) cause of death is suicide.
Treat yourself. Be comfortable. Live enough to live happy.
It’s Ramadan, the annual holy month where Muslims fast (nothing past the throat except air) from sunrise to sunset for one whole lunar cycle.
Many medical trainees are fasting during this time.
In this 🧵 I’ll provide info & point out a few things you can do to be helpful:
My one interview tip I find worth sharing:
No one is more of an expert at being you than you! Be yourself in interviews.
Words will flow easier, body language won’t be tense & you can bank on your expertise of being YOU.
If they’re interviewing you, they already like you!
Incoming Interns!
Unless you want to be stalked by a patient, colleague, ex, taxman, old neighbor, the nosy auntie who lives across the street, the cousin who asks too many questions or the person you owe money to:
DO NOT PUT YOUR HOME ADDRESS ON YOUR NPI APPLICATION!
Guys, this is the toughest time of
#Match2024
season.
Awaiting invites.
There will be times where you’ll question your hard work, imposter syndrome will be ripe & anxiety will be through the roof.
Leverage your support systems 🙏🏽
Remember, you are enough!
