I’m increasingly convinced that one way to quickly democratise EV charging for those who park on-street is a £30 bit of hardware that can be installed in 30 minutes. Now we just need the government and local authorities to get ready to enable this solution. #throughstreetcharging

It’s 12 years until 2035, when all new cars and vans in the UK must be zero-emission. 12 years ago, the fastest you could get 24kWh of energy into most EVs was about 10 hours. I just got that in about 12 minutes. Using today’s infrastructure in debates about 2035 is a nonsense.

I think car manufacturers need to take the brave pill and focus their drivetrains on efficiency, rather than performance. Most EVs have way too much power. It’s also very wasteful as you end up needing a 100kWh battery to reliably do 250 miles, when a 60kWh pack should suffice.

This week, the UK grid essentially ‘declined’ 21.5 GWh of wind energy in 12 hours, because we had no way of using it. That ‘wasted’ energy could have been used to power the daily mileage of nearly 3.5 million electric cars, based on UK average figures. Energy storage is crucial!

We should absolutely care about how EVs and their components are made, and focus on improving global supply chains. But it does amuse me that absolutely nobody seemed to give a sh*t about how cars were made until electric ones arrived. Funny that, eh?

I love how people like Matt consider themselves intellectuals and then completely undermine themselves by spouting utter rubbish like “batteries last about 60,000 miles.” The batteries will invariably outlast the cars. Why do I know this? Because I’m an expert. And Matt isn’t.

If Britain switches all cars to electric, it may actually increase emissions. An EV has to travel 50,000+ miles to break even with an ICE car. That number is growing, not shrinking. But batteries last about 60,000 miles.

A nice little nugget from @SolarEnergyUK_ : If just 1 in 6 UK homes (4.4m out of 28m) had solar panels + battery + intelligent system controls, it could help *eliminate* the winter evening peak in electricity demand entirely - and, of course, also support overall grid stability.

No ‘smug EV driver’ posts from me. EVs aren’t yet affordable for all who buy the 8-9 million cars sold every year in the UK. Panic buying is going to hit the poorest hardest. Consider the key worker using a sub-£5,000 ICE to get them to work. Not funny.

The car braked and indicated. If you're a cyclist, surely you brake and don't go up the inside. There are some truly terrible drivers out there with no respect for cyclists, but I am starting to think there are a bunch of cyclists who basically just want viral helmet cam clips...

When are folk going to realise entitlement to occupy a particular bit of roadspace is NOT the same as it being a sensible place to put yourself? I would never, ever, EVER ride up the inside of a left turning vehicle, especially having just been in its blindspot. Just don’t!

OK folks, so I did a thing. I’ve bought what is almost certainly the UK’s cheapest Tesla and am picking it up after @FullyChargedShw tomorrow. Needs a bit of work to get it running as it should, but was too much of a bargain to ignore! Watch this space…

“I’m ignoring the million or so people who have happily swapped their diesel/petrol for an #ElectricCar , for a piece in a national paper focusing on the <1% who have switched from EV to ICE.” #journorequest She also uses ‘EV cult’ in a follow up post. Tediously predictable. 🙄

I am approaching middle age, so I have, naturally, bought myself a lightweight, rear-wheel drive, two-seater with minimal driver aids and very little room for luggage.

Placed orders for 10 Kia e-Niro within hours of the order books opening on 8th January 2019. Final four arrived today. EV demand is *MASSIVELY* outstripping supply in the UK. True demand could well be 10% of the car market, but nobody knows, because OEMs can’t supply the volumes.

Hang on, I thought it was just electric cars that depreciate. Seems it’s the whole car market! Whatdya know?!

One of my favourite current graphs (from @theCCCuk ). Once you’ve displaced coal power generation, the second best thing you can do with a MWh of renewable electricity is powering EVs. The third is powering heat pumps.

People enjoy sharing videos of rare electric vehicle fires with me, so I hope those people are equally interested in what happens when refuelling at a petrol station goes wrong…

Being wilfully ignorant isn’t a virtue, especially when you’re in a position of influence. The UK electricity grid has arguably decarbonised faster than any other major economy’s power system, so we can stop with the coal-powered lawn mower nonsense.

Net Zero Nonsense. Cutting my lawns with a battery powered lawnmower (a gift) gets you thinking.

Getting so sick of BBC clickbait. The article even says it’s not too hot for solar panels, so why not just SAY IT in the headline? A lot of casual readers will simply scroll past this story, read the headline and assume the answer is ‘yes’. We desperately need better journalism.

These figures are from a recent WhatCar? real world EV test, where they drove EV’s around Millbrook until they conked out. Advertising Standards should take a look… as no one else could get away with such nonsense in their advertising. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Given all the recent negativity about UK EV charging infrastructure in the press, a reminder that if you wanted to use only a bank card or smartphone wallet to charge at a motorway service area about three years ago, here's how much choice you had versus what you have today...

Why do allegedly intelligent people assume that ‘global warming’ means ‘it’s hot everywhere, all the time’. Are they genuinely stupid or are they just knowingly misleading their audience like all populist contrarians?

Helpful suggestions for those marketing non-plug-in hybrids: ❎ Stop using the word ‘electric’... ...because they just use petrol ❎ Stop using the word ‘charging’... ...because they just use petrol ❎ Stop confusing your customers... ...because they just use petrol
