The core Raft implementation to support ZooKeeper-free Kafka has been merged (including 5k lines of test code). This is a major milestone on the way to KIP-500.

Kafka’s streams api supports pluggable, partitioned, fault tolerant data structures as state stores, which makes this type of local lookup structure really easy.
Architectures for crawling and indexing for search used to be primarily batch, but now are generally stream processing flows that transform and augment the data for indexing as it is collected.
