Normalize allowing your single friends to bring their platonic best friend as a plus one to your wedding.
Like I am begging y’all to stop only validating romantic relationships. Not everyone wants them but they still have a person.
ain’t nobody ever gonna gaslight me into believing that asking for basic human rights is controversial.
or that collective punishment is ok.
or that bombing hospitals & refugee camps is ok.
demanding a ceasefire is not controversial. it’s the bare minimum. 🇵🇸

Ugh see I respect you so much dealing with parents. I teach college students so no parents. Thank you so much for being a brilliant teacher. 🖤

believed in ME (MOTH), a book about hurt & hoodoo & love & storytelling, which is now a finalist for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.
Winning the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe award for ME (MOTH), a book I wrote after the loss of my grandfather, a book about ancestors & love & hope & magic has left me speechless.
Humbled & honored. Thank you to the CSK Award jury for seeing Me & Moth. Thanks
@ALALibrary

My therapist asked me how I wrote a book about a Black girl with depression & how it makes you feel haunted & guilty & alone during the worst depressive episode of my life.
All I could say was, writing for young people makes me braver.
Preorder:
Ummmm like I love all the bestie love happening here!!!
& shameless plug (bc I am a writer) if you love friends who stick together even through a haunted garden, side by side no matter what my forthcoming book WE ARE ALL SO GOOD AT SMILING has that…
my grandmother who has dementia remembered by book came out yesterday.
she said, "it's not the Moth it's the Wolf one...Amber wrote it."

I am a professor, a Coretta Scott King Award Winner, a National Book Award & Morris Award Finalist & I read the Narnia books EXCLUSIVELY for five years.
Imagine thinking that kids enjoying books is a problem.
Imagine thinking certain books can’t “improve literacy” AND be fun!
I would 100% prefer my kid to be able to read and understand Moby Dick, but hate it and read rarely, than to love reading Diary of a Wimpy kid and its like frequently. A love of reading is nice, but it's not the goal of literacy instruction.

So many weddings and I find that if you are not in a “relationship” you are not even given the option of a plus one BUT people who have dated for two weeks can bring their partner.
Like let me and my bestie be the party on the dance floor!
The pretentiousness in academia towards young adult writers is insane.
Like, my adult poetry collection comes out with Penguin in Feb & suddenly people are impressed.
Suddenly, they ask have you thought of teaching in an MFA?
Reminder: PB, MG & YA writers create adult readers.
Y’all if I ever do anything crazy like sign a 7 figure deal imma rent a castle in Europe somewhere and invite 15 writer friends to chill, write, bake and generally act up for two weeks.
it’s my 35th birthday, no fancy photos this year. during my 34th year depression hit me harder than ever & my dog, who was a 21st bday gift from my parents passed. my parents got me shiloh bc they were worried I would harm myself. shiloh saved my life. remembering her today. 🖤🐺
Shiloh passed away yesterday morning, 1 month before her 13th birthday.
Shiloh was a gift from my parents for my 21st bday. They got her bc my depression had gotten so bad they were worried I’d harm myself.
Loving Shiloh saved my life. Loving Shiloh taught me how to live.💔🖤
Y’all I teach from 10 am to 12 and the 50 missed messages let me know first that ME (MOTH) is long listed for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and I am a crying in the UVA bathroom. Thank you so much and congrats to everyone!

Longlist announcements!
We are so excited to share the ten contenders for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. Congratulations to everyone on the list!
One of my youngest family members just found ME (MOTH) at the Barnes & Noble in Fairfax, VA and THIS PHOTO, her excitement…sobbing. Inconsolable.
🥺🥺🦋🖤😭😭
@ESmithStevens
This statement is 100% ageist, a bit classist, flirting with being elitist and very targeted towards a “specific kind” of young person. Also never mind this might be the only opportunity some “young people” get to take creative writing classes in a serious way. This is not it.
Black girl who had a speech impediment when she was younger that almost made it impossible for her to read in front of people does her own audiobook &&&&&& a little in shock still!

Often (not always as seen in a lot of the responses) “single” people are not offered a plus one or I’d be bringing my bestie to all weddings.
Removing ALL poetry when there is no other category for it & MG/ Children’s Literature? Like adding without taking away is an ok option. We can have all the cake in this situation.
Voting for the only major book awards chosen by readers has finally begun. That’s right, the 15th annual Goodreads Choice Awards are here! Vote during the Opening Round for the books you want to see make it to the Final Round!
The video of the murder of Tyre Nichols will be released today, so a reminder…please think before you repost it everywhere. At the very least post with a trigger warning. For many of your Black followers watching is traumatic.
We Are All So Good At Smiling, my YA novel in verse about clinical depression (out Jan 10), received a starred review from Kirkus Review!

🐺🖤🙏🏾
GONE WOLF, the book that was almost not published, won the LA TIMES BOOK AWARD in the YA category. I would have never kept pushing for this book to get published without the support of my parents (Mario & Debra), my ancestors, friends and baby wolf Shiloh.
So grateful!
Being a Black author is someone saying they did not like your book and in their review the reasons why are all aspects of their internalized racism.
Like honey, I am Black. I don’t know what to tell you. If you haven’t addressed your racism of course you won’t like the book.
I can’t believe my debut poetry collection that took me 10 years to finish comes out TOMORROW.
In primarily white spaces I was so often told my poems were not enough.
Grateful for Black poets who helped me find my voice again.

Being a Black professor be like:
this year i taught a 3:3 schedule, released 3 books which got 9 starred reviews, 4 conferences, 2 keynotes, 5 school visits, finished copyedits for ONYX & BEYOND (Oct 24), excellent peer reviews & wrote 2 new things.
still not tenure track 👀🙃.
Hi team if you have done nothing over the last year to actively support Black people & dismantle white supremacy in the US & abroad please bring that same energy to today & fight the urge to google an MLK quote & post it.

But after 4 yrs at UVA & a decade professoring taking some time.
New title who this?

That’s a good question & a point a lot of people have brought up…I have not run into this issue (yet) BUT encouraging students to be working on papers gradually? I do remind them, the final day to turn in your paper is three days from now…you should prob have a draft…
We must not lose sight of the fact that the overwhelming majority of Palestinians had nothing to do with Hamas’s appalling attacks, and are suffering as a result of them.
ME (MOTH) got her second starred review! This time from SLJ! 😭😭🦋⭐️⭐️
“…poignant and richly layered narrative. The story builds softly and subtly to a perfect, bittersweet ending. Fans of Jacqueline Woodson won’t be able to put this one down.”
Woke up to this banner for e-books because y’all are brilliant. YA Black & African American Fiction Really hits different! 🖤🖤🖤🙏🏾🦋
MOTH would love to meet you:
UVA willfully ESCALATED the situation by sending 200 cops in riot gear to disband 20 ish unarmed students in tents peacefully protesting.
They did not send admin/ deans or mediators.
They sent GUNS. Tear-gassed & arrested them. For the crime of advocating for human rights.
When you ESCALATE a situation from Tents to Rifles you’ve lost every potential for good.
The 20 students in tents could’ve been met w/ 20 Administrators who took a blanket & sat down on the grass days ago to simply listen instead of deciding to send 200 police officers w/ guns.
I told my therapist I got long listed for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature and she was really excited.
But then she asked how I will celebrate. And I was like...writing all day, then grading, then planning for next week...
And then she was annoyed again.
Publishers Weekly best books of 2023 list came out a few weeks ago & so much gratitude to see my debut MG GONE WOLF on it.
