"Emphasizing the violence of Hamas’ attacks helped Israel tell a one-dimensional story of a multi-dimensional conflict—one that left out its decades of occupation, blockade of Gaza, and systematic violence against the Palestinians."
A first version of this tweet included the live feed footage of rocket launches from Gaza.
It has now been removed because the timestamp on the feed does not match the reported time of the explosion at the hospital.
Breaking: IDF Spokesperson
From the analysis of the operational systems of the IDF, an enemy rocket barrage was carried out towards Israel, which passed through the vicinity of the hospital when it was hit.
According to intelligence information, from several sources we have,…
This video probably shows the airstrike on the Al Ahly hospital.
Meanwhile the same message putting the blame on Hamas (a failed rocket launch) is copy-pasted by several accounts, including blue tick ones, despite offering no evidence.
It's racking up thousands of views.
Growing reports of Palestinian content getting shadowbanned on Instagram and Facebook.
This potentially includes valuable images documenting what is happening on the ground.
In 2021, Meta had banned all content related to Sheikh Jarrah and Al-Aqsa "due to a mistake".
After posting an Instagram story about the war in Gaza yesterday, my account was shadowbanned. Many colleagues and journalists friends have reported the same. It’s an extraordinary threat to the flow of information and credible journalism about an unprecedented war…

Long thread 🧵 on misinformation in the Gaza war, looking back at these 47 days and looking forward to the truce.
The information conflict is not new. This 2023 war, however, is different than previous ones and it became a perfect storm of misinformation.
Hamas failed launch hit a hospital in Gaza. The Palestinians claims its Israeli airstrike however the video shows something else. All the footage they provide doesn’t match the casualties they claim to have.

The flood of misinformation and the limitations that X put in place for access to their API have complicated the work of human rights researchers to conduct investigations into possible war crimes.

Israel/Palestine and misinformation🧵 update
We are witnessing the implications of rampant misinformation.
1) Fear, dehumanisation, incitement:
Israelis are arming themselves in fear of more attacks.
Settlers are targeting Palestinians in the WB
.
@FakeReporter
doing a great job at verifying some of these posts.
One video showed "Israeli children in cages in Gaza", another one abuses on Israeli children. They are both fake/old.
These images only aggravate incitement and hate speech
ATTENTION: The video which claims to show the abducted Israeli kids in cages in Gaza is FALSE. These are NOT Israeli children, and the video was posted more than four days ago - before the current war.
Please do not spread this false and harmful video.

🧵Twitter's paid API access limits real-time data availability, hindering vital research and analysis. A challenge in conflict-prone regions where accurate information is crucial as we know at
@CrisisGroup
Let's see why 🧵
On this platform (X/Twitter), it is particularly concerning that some blue tick accounts are spreading the viral misinformation images to monetise their reach and engagement.
X should stop monetisation of this kind of content.
Not going to comment on Elon promoting accounts.
New: verified Twitter 'OSINT' accounts are destroying the Israel-Palestine information ecosystem. What used to be a network of reliable experts has been taken over by profit and click driven verified accounts. Everyone loses out. "Unprecedented" levels
And the bots called Sofia needed less than 2 minutes to like these tweets from 5 different accounts. Great job on restricting access to the API to fight bots on this platform...
La notizia del rapimento di Serraj è rilanciata dai media italiani, senza per ora conferme e senza essere riportata in altri paesi. La fonte della notizia sarebbe questo dubbio account pro-Haftar che ha fatto retromarcia dopo 30 minuti. Verificare no, eh?

Several accounts of journalists who were in Kfar Aza yesterday.
No confirmation whatsoever of beheaded children.
The scene was gruesome, atrocities were probably committed by Hamas, but there is no need to spread more horrid made up details.
For clarity:
There will probably be more videos coming out that will give us more insights and they will be investigated. I'm not ruling out completely any of the possibilities.
This pattern of blame deflecting through rumours and instrumental use of OSINT is worrisome.
The same images might pop up on your feed with the claim, instead, that these are Palestinian children being held captive or abused by Israeli security forces.
Similarly, lots of misinformation on whether it was Ukraine or Russia that helped Hamas carry out the attacks.

The sheer amount of doctored/fake/old videos and images of attacks circulating is also making it harder to understand what is going on on the ground.
Social media data can be extremely useful in planning and delivering aid and emergency relief.

All communication (phone, internet) lines in Gaza are interrupted and won’t be reestablished anytime soon. The Jawwal tower had already been bombed, now PalTel is out too.
In this darkness, it will be even harder to document what’s happening on the ground.

Following the terrorist attacks by Hamas against 🇮🇱, we have indications of X/Twitter being used to disseminate illegal content & disinformation in the EU.

Blue tick accounts enjoying algorithmic promotion who can now monetise engagement.
Engagement is often driven by rage-baiting, polarising opinions aimed at getting you to retweet (in support or in disaccord) and build loyalty w/ audiences
New: A handful of influential but unreliable "breaking news" accounts, many promoted by Elon Musk, are dominating the flow of news on Twitter around the Israel-Hamas war and easily outpacing established mainstream news outlets, according to new research.
This is a political conflict, with no military solution.
Public opinion matters. International pressure matters. Language matters. Information matters.
Protection of all civilian lives should be the main concern.
I deleted the previous tweet with all the footage emerging.
The truth may no longer matter, but for accountability.
What happened is not at all clear.
Surely rushing to put out misleading evidence did not help establish trust.
So far the explanation was that the fibre cable was damaged in the bombing and then repaired.
The internet and phone blackout probably contributed to a higher death toll, at least because first responders operated in the dark and people could not call ambulances
Shutting off communications in Gaza was an explicit decision by the Israelis -- one that was reversed after pressure from the United States, says a senior U.S. official. “We made it clear they had to be turned back on" and "need to stay back on.” Via

Yes, 40 children were killed and it's atrocious.
No, they were likely not beheaded.
It's absurd that we are even debating this.
It's a detail, however, that likely makes a difference in what may be considered a "permissible response".
The detail of the women raped at the rave (also not confirmed by anyone but one magazine with no sourcing) is another powerful image driving the narrative.
President Biden quoted it last night in his remarks.
