Javier Milei just gave a speech announcing massive deregulation of the economy in Argentina.
I liked how he opened the speech: condemning the philosophy that led Argentina to the situation it’s in today.
Watch the beginning of
@JMilei

In a year-end speech,
@JMilei
mentioned again the philosophical cause of Argentina’s decline: collectivism. And what led it to prosperity once: freedom.
Good for him for identifying what ideas lead societies to disaster or prosperity, and calling them explicitly by their name.
Milei just delivered a message where he condemned collectivism (called it by its name) for a few minutes, explained that leftism has failed catastrophically everywhere, said Argentina needs more freedom not controls, and proceeded to name 30 key deregulations— from tourism to

A heckler yelled: "Who are you to talk about America? You're a foreigner!"
She turned to him and answered: “That's right. I chose to be an American. What did you do, besides having been born?"
So this tweet blew up! It sparked a fun debate over the Oxford comma.
I’m not a native English speaker so I could’ve been wrong about the comma. Or not. I’m looking into it 👀.

Creen que el estado les pertenece. Que todos los argentinos deberían continuar obligados a pagar sus salarios por un trabajo que no forma parte de una función legítima del estado.
Gran parte del problema del estatismo es que crea burócratas con privilegios.

One of the many problems that statism creates are bureaucrats who think they’re entitled to jobs funded by taxpayers. If, per statism, an individual life belongs to the state, then individuals must be forced to sustain its massive bureaucracy.
This is good to see. Javier Milei just spoke about the virtues of capitalism at the WEF meeting. To finish his speech, he recognized the virtue and value of the unjustly vilified businessmen— the producers who make prosperity possible.
Good job

At this point, I can’t take seriously anyone who discusses climate/energy but doesn’t know

Whatever their view, if they aren’t familiar with AE’s arguments, then it means they don’t take the issue seriously. His contributions to this debate are vast and undeniable.
One benefit of

Right now, businessmen have to ask bureaucrats (who don’t produce anything) for permission to produce.

I don’t agree with all of Milei’s ideas, but his best ones are clearly influenced by Ayn Rand.
His speech last night was so moving because of that influence. Rand is the best defender of individualism, ever.
Good job

I don't think Donald Jr. understood Milei's speech.
It's interesting that MAGA conservatives are so fond of Milei, when he's quite far from Trump in basically every aspect.
Trump shares similarities with authoritarian Cristina Kirchner and her ilk, not with free market Milei.
Milei hasn’t even been sworn in and protests against him are already ensuing.
I said on a podcast the other day that in Argentina there’s this common saying that “no one can govern but the peronistas.” Here’s why: when not in power, they create chaos, protests and national

Ayn Rand identified what makes America unique: its founding principles rooted in individualism.
Far from being a purely theoretical, abstract matter, Rand’s writings on this were instrumental in helping me decide to immigrate to America.

I’m in Argentina visiting family and everyone I talk to understands that hard times are coming but they’re necessary. They’re willing to endure them to get to prosperity on the other side.
There’s a group of people that is not willing to do it, though, and want Milei gone.

I haven’t read the executive order yet as it’s not yet available, so I can’t evaluate these measures in detail. But my first reaction is very positive.
There are a few things to criticize, but I’ll do that later after I get the chance to revisit Milei’s address.
How long they thought it would take: 1 year.
How long it actually took: less than 48 hs.

I want my fellow Argentinians to be allowed to produce, to enjoy the products of their labor and not be condemned to perpetual poverty.
I want an Argentina free of socialism and with plenty of freedom.

Leaving aside the debate over the constitutionality of Milei’s executive order deregulating the economy, there’s another hurdle he will have to face: social resistance to freedom from a society that’s used to massive government intervention.
There are at least 2 fronts that’ll
I want to ask Nowrasteh how he kept his composure when faced with this three-minute long diatribe of non-sequiturs and other fallacies by Roy.
This video is good, though, because it's an example of the emotion-driven "arguments" often made against freedom in immigration.
Back in the 90s, Argentina had a much freer market than it has now.
This 1991 ad raised awareness of how the market works without price controls. Sad to see how, since then, people's thinking about this issue has been distorted by regulations.

Ayn Rand perfectly identified the emotion behind envy, and why some people attack good things.
If you’re struggling to understand the mentality behind the mobs on this platform that attack good and moral things, this will help you figure it out.

The problem is that you have no conception of what “rights” are, and you think “inequality” is a problem, when in reality it’s poverty that’s a problem, not inequality.
There are so many Americans in spirit around the world who have never set foot in America.
That’s the power of the American ideal, and it’s the only country with this phenomenon due to its unique philosophy.
I hope someday America welcomes all Americans to their home. 🇺🇸
I have just become American.
Thatcher said that Europe was built by history, and America by philosophy. That also applies to the nationality of immigrants — I was born in France by accident, and have become American out of profound love for this country.

What did Ayn Rand say about immigration?
In the Q&A following her 1973 Ford Hall Forum speech, she was asked: “What is your attitude toward immigration? Doesn’t open immigration have a negative effect on a country’s standard of living?”
Her answer: she’s for open immigration👇
AOC says the “root of the problem” in immigration is US foreign policy, and that that's why people from LatAm flee their countries.

Estuvo muy bien que Milei abriera el discurso explicando las ideas *filosóficas* que llevaron a la Argentina al desastre que es hoy: el colectivismo.
No recuerdo haber escuchado a ningún político hablar de esta manera sobre este tema.
Hard to overstate how terribly disruptive pickets are in Argentina. I used to live in a big city downtown with pickets on my street twice a week. I couldn’t get my car out to go to school. People couldn’t get to work. Ambulances couldn’t get to nearby hospitals. Imagine the

The fundamental aspect of capitalism is the recognition/protection of individual rights (freedom), not “competition.” It’s more than just economics.
As a consequence of freedom, there’ll be competition as people are free to trade and innovate.
Biden’s tweet makes zero sense.
I left everything behind to come to America. I very consciously chose to live here. But the country I grew up loving and admiring is disappearing. The abortion decision is a big blow, but not the only one. Left and right there’s only tribalism and contempt for individualism.
As an immigrant who *chose* to come to America specifically, I find it offensive when people claim that America is “bad.”
Do these people think I and millions of others left everything behind to come live under an evil regime?
No, we came here to live in a country that is
america IS bad. there’s a mountain of evidence as to why. we live in a world where the us is the hegemonic power. it takes tremendous amounts of violence and coercion to get there and keep that power. you think that’s good. i think that’s bad and america should change its ways.
Wrote a column on for the

Contrary to his anarco-capitalist philosophy, government is a necessary good, not an unnecessary evil.
Reading the news today, I recalled this quote by Ayn Rand:
"There is no such thing as historical determinism. The world does not have to continue moving toward disaster. But unless men change their philosophical direction-which they still have time to do-the collapse will come."

I’m looking forward to being in Argentina to celebrate the rejection of socialism and what’s hopefully going to be a new era of freedom and prosperity.
I cringe every time I hear “defund the police.” In the city where I used to live the police went on strike for 24 hs in 2013. The result was ten times worse than you could possibly imagine.
I am as SHOCKED as Reich to learn that business are in it for the money. I am also flabbergasted by the fact that a corporation apparently can do what it wants with its money and compensate CEOs according to the value they create instead of using it to make frappuccinos cheaper!
Starbucks is raising prices again, blaming supply chain issues and labor costs.
Meanwhile, Starbucks CEO’s total compensation rose 39% in 2021 to $20.4 million.
Do not be fooled. This is about corporate greed. It always is.
Immigrants don’t "take American jobs," they create jobs in America.
A recent study explored how likely immigrants are to start businesses vs. native-born Americans. It found that immigrants are 80% more likely to start businesses of all sizes than the native-born.
Sad to see people bonding on Twitter over irrationalities today, coming together to hate on a philosopher with whom they’ve never engaged in any significant way. All they know about her is wrong and they’ve heard it from someone else. No effort to think for themselves. I’m out.
It’s not that conservative presidential candidates don’t want *illegal* immigration. They don’t want immigration, full stop.
If they actually wanted immigration and were really grappling with the issue, they wouldn’t propose to “fix the border”— they would propose to fix the
Brain draining authoritarian regimes should be a no-brainer for America.
Welcoming migrants such as these not only weakens authoritarian regimes, but strengthens America as well.
Unfortunately, the immigration system makes it impossible for most people to immigrate legally.
Middle class Chinese citizens are fleeing the country for the USA. And, having been blocked by long US visa backlogs, they're increasingly looking to enter illegally via Mexico (and the burgeoning business to help them).

That’s still a problem in Argentina’s government. There are thousands of employees who literally do not work but are still getting paid. And I’ve heard about dead people still getting paid many times. The new government is uncovering many such cases.
In a 1869 speech, Frederick Douglass addressed restrictions on Chinese immigration.
As it's always the case with really good thinking, his words here are timeless and still apply today. What's sad is that what he said over 150 years ago is still not understood by many. 🧵

As I said on another tweet, I’m not a native English speaker so could be wrong about the necessity of the Oxford comma. Looking into it.
However, this headline is not clear at all, as evidenced by the literal hundreds of people who replied/RTed this tweet.
I wonder if Ramawasmy thinks that the people who broke the law during Prohibition were unamerican.
Provide a way for hard-working people to come here legally and they'll follow the law.
"The safest way to make laws respected is to make them respectable," said Bastiat.
You can’t be American if your first act of entering the country is a lawbreaking one. That’s not racist. That’s not xenophobic. We are a nation built on the rule of law. Secure the border and eliminate lottery-based immigration in favor of meritocratic admission. Do not apologize
If I can give one piece of advice to anyone putting their ideas out there on Twitter: don’t engage with trolls and with people who are incapable of a civil discussion. You can’t get to those people, they’re not your audience and you’ll be wasting your time.

List of some of the people who should be allowed to immigrate to America:
✅ People who want to work in tech in SF
✅ People who want to open a gyro restaurant in NYC
✅ People who want to harvest potatoes in Idaho
✅ Literally anyone who’s peaceful and wants to work.
New “argument” against immigration just dropped: hosting migrants is “slavery.”
It should be clear at this point that the far right is not really concerned about national security, or migrants coming in “legally,” or anything else. They just don’t want immigrants, period.
THE IMMORALITY OF THE U.S. IMMIGRATION SYSTEM
That is the title of a talk I gave last month.
In it, I argue that the American immigration system is not merely messed up, it’s completely immoral.
Here’s why 👇
@PregoneroL
Parte del problema es que la Argentina no está acostumbrada al libre mercado. Para muchos, que cierren los galpones porque una empresa es inviable es una violación del “derecho de los trabajadores.” No existe una concepto de qué es lo que son los derechos realmente. Hay inflación
The solution to illegal immigration is legalizing immigration.
Migrants don't want to come here illegally if given a choice. But there's no way for the vast majority of them to immigrate legally. Give them a legal way to do so and they will, as the data show.
Supporting unlimited skilled immigration means respecting the rights of Americans to hire whoever they want.
It means bringing the best and the brightest to the US and letting them work & produce alongside the native-born.
It means more jobs & more money.
How is this bad?
Vivek said he supports unlimited skilled immigration to the U.S.
Think about what that means. Gutting American labor and bringing in 5+ million immigrants per year.
On immigration, he’s to the left of Hillary, Biden, and Bernie.
The desire to further restrict legal immigration is a commonality between cartels and nativists.
The nativists want it for tribal reasons. The cartels, for profit.
One difference: nativists are shooting themselves in the foot, while cartels only see benefits from restrictions.
THIS. Legal immigration to the US is near impossible. “Get in line”?
There’s no line. “Come here the right way”? There’s basically NO WAY. The immigration system sets immigrants for failure.
I wish people knew how damn near impossible “legal immigration” is. I’ve gotten my HS diploma, BA + JD in the US legally. Still had a work visa denied because “my proposed endeavor of being a public defender only benefits the poor + indigent and is not of interest to the nation”
Thomas Jefferson on immigration:

Interesting fact I didn’t know: Henry Ford helped his new immigrant employees assimilate by providing English classes (looks like they were taught other things as well).
Cuban is right about many of his points on immigration here. But allowing immigration because “we need immigrants” due to birth rates declining, etc. is not the right approach. “Need” is pragmatic, it varies and is collectivistic. Immigrants should be allowed in as long as

Imagine having not one, but hundreds of thousands of Messis in America, in all fields— from sports to science to gastronomy. People at the top of their profession, thriving in the U.S.
This could happen with freer immigration in America.

This is a bad take. You can disagree with Milei’s proposed policies and overall ideas, but comparing him to the military government, which came to power through a coup, is just wrong. Doesn’t mean a democratically elected government can’t be authoritarian (see Venezuela) but
I don’t think we should be “anti-socialist.” We should be “pro-freedom,” “pro-capitalism.” That negates socialism while advocating for actual values and a clear political and moral stance.
