THREAD: Jose Altuve & Edgar Martinez talking about their scissor/kickback.
Here Altuve is talking about how he strides closed and scissors. Even during his feel the foot doesn’t come back to the ground until after contact. The feet work...”the total opposite.”
Discussing timing with a hitter the other day and made this video as a visual for how early you should start moving. Yes you should consider individual timing mechanisms (leg kick, bat tip, toe tap, etc), but in general most hitters start their move way too late and end up
Actually these graphics were stripped from the walls when the organization brought in the new coaching staff.
All of this isn’t bad by any means, but it was identified that this philosophy, among other things, lead to underperformance of the team.
The Rangers have a 3 pillar…
So you’re hitting everyday right? Some tee work, front toss, BP, maybe a little machine. Competing against the other 99% of baseball players that are doing the same thing and “want” exactly what you want. Maintenance work and change are different strategies. The only way to
🗣👂🏼 Interesting to listen to A-Rod talking about advice that Mussina gave him when he wasn’t hitting well. Even more interesting to hear how A-Rod went about fixing the problem.
Deceleration isn’t new, the best have been training it for years. They knew what it felt like.
Your “hit line drives oppo” approach could be the exact reason you’re not hitting.
An approach isn’t universal, it’s individual. Trying to have the same approach as someone else is slippery.
God called my Nana home this morning.
She had a stroke on Christmas while making dinner. She lives in CA, flights have been a mess, we were trying to get my mom out to see her. Got her booked for Friday. As my mom was stepping on the plane she passed on.
Call your mom today🙏🏼❤️
The messy process of repatterning and designing movements.
1.) It takes ⏱
2.) It’s a pain in the 🍑
3.) At each phase the system must be challenged then progressed/regressed.
4.) It’s Individualized and because of this, so is the pace of development.

A plan to hit everything is a plan to hit nothing. Every approach leaves you vulnerable to something. Pick your poison, learn to play chess, work your approach.
Old School Coaches, you know I always got you!
Explaining to our guys why coaches make them go oppo in early rounds and how it helps their swings when they do it correctly.
Creating barrel depth and proper sequencing to give them better plate coverage👊🏼

is one of the best hitting coaches in all of College Softball.
He’s too humble to accept that acknowledgment, but I truly believe the approach they are taking will impact the game of Softball 🥎
“I never can pull balls with true backspin”
We can fix that. This has been one of my favorite ways to use the Farm Board max. Open 45, then close the gap, leverage the front side, pull against the front hip, etc.
Learn how to move from the middle.

“You didn’t hit at a high level in college”
I know. Let’s talk about it.
On the left 21, I had a 450lbs Squat, 480 DL, and was in peak athleticism in my life. My EVs were in the low 80’s. I was a D1 baseball player. The swing sucks.
On the right, no where close to those weight

No one:
Baseball Writer: (Didn’t play past high school) If these damn hitting coaches would just stop teaching these guys to only try for home runs.
Everyone:
THREAD: A lot of “this or that” going around, but yes, a lot of hitters rotate better by thinking about not rotating.
A lot of hitters also rotate better by allowing themselves to rotate or even thinking about rotating hard. Don’t get attached to cues or thoughts.
I tore my shoulder in three places in college. Never fixed it.
I remember someone telling me that If I couldn’t throw BP I would never get a job as a hitting coach. That didn’t age well.
Now I hire guys to throw BP, and other things I guess😂 Be good, those are details.
So many good things in here, especially off a machine. Great hitters are always working to get better. If you’re not getting better you’re getting worse.
Even Nolan has ways he can continue to get better. What does that say about us?
Once you feel the difference of deceleration, stability, space, direction, whip, effortless jump it changes how you view the swing. Awesome to watch Breg’s journey and continue to develop himself as a player. It will continue to get better over time.
Next step will be getting…
Bregman talking with his coach about cues he’s using to clean up his sequencing.
🤔“Do you want me to think about scissoring?”
Referring to it being a feel they have used in the past.
🤔“Keep my chest facing that way?”
Feeling a trunk decel and barrel release with direction.
Everyone missed kickbacks/scissors ✂️ for years because:
1.) They weren’t taught it
2.) Weren’t looking for it
3.) They didn’t know how to teach it
4.) It happens so fast
5.) Camera Angles for Lefties are tough
Griffey had “effortless power” for a reason, his decels were nasty.
Remember this one from a few months ago? My man

always has some solid stuff for rotational athletes. Learning how to rotate the hip away from a fixed femur can have a drastic impact on how effectively you use the ground during the swing.
The only reason we get separated is to close the gap. Listen in as I talk about what’s going on under the hood with our anatomical reverse thrusters 🚀. Close the gap, two rotations not one.
Compress the ground, give it a little feedback😉 Sometimes I tell them to feel like your a little kid throwing a tantrum and someone is trying to pick you up. Pull in to thr ground, dont let them pick you up. Not dead weight, pull in to the ground.
Any young S&C coaches or soon to be coaches looking to learn a few things, the Diamondbacks are offering a virtual internship at no cost that would prove to be very valuable. Dbacks Sports Med and medicine team are nasty.
Shoot me a DM if you’re interested!👊🏼
Best Player in Baseball, when it’s all said and done, maybe ever.
Does it really look like he’s trying hard to create that amount of force? Does it really look like insane bat speed? Or is this something else?
The most efficient do the least to create the most. Be like Mike.
Take the Meat and leave the Bones Thread 🪡
Random thread of drills and nuggets as I’m working through my camera roll and finding drills and unlocks I had with athletes over the years. Steal none of it or all of it. Just remember me around Christmas😉
Let’s Talk Hitting!
The Hitting World Catching on to things we’ve been talking about for years. Greg does a really good breakdown here.

3/4 Stop Swings 😈
These are a lot harder than they look. They are a great way to give a hitter feedback on their angles and spacing. It also challenges a hitter to get up to speed in a small window of time. More than anything though, they challenge a hitters ability to slam on

🤓Small angles become big angles.
🧩 How we utilize space with our pelvis is going to be magnified up the chain.
Most hitters make the mistake of working around their front hip instead of replacing their front hip. Leads to a loss of direction and space, side spin, miss hits.
🤷🏻♂️Reason 999854 I couldn’t hit.
Don’t make my same mistakes🙅🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Learn from my failures so that you don’t have to go through the same hardships that I went through. This was 2 years ago, when I had a incomplete understanding of hip/shoulder separation. Back to work👊🏼
“Pull the ball Oppo”. I’m going to be putting out more info around orientation in the up coming week. For now, here’s something to start wrapping your head around.
Setting your eyes oppo can help quiet the frontside of the body(pulling the shoulder, yanking, rolling over etc) which helps you pull the ball with better spin/angle. “Stay closed longer”. Don’t force it oppo, set the eyes oppo and react.
I think I’m going to start hitting consistently again. Here’s day 1 from a week ago.
Over the last year I’ve maybe swung a bat a handful of times. We’ve been busy building, but I think getting a bat in your hand consistently can be a tool that helps you maintain perspective as a…
When I lose space because of an early weight shift, I only have so many options to create space. Space and time are intimately connected. Some spacing moves cost me direction and limit my ability to transfer force in to the ball.
Creating and maintaining space is largely…
The surface just reveals how our body is creating rotational force. The ground amplifies force it doesn’t create it. Remove the body from the ground and see how it adapts and responds, then reintroduce the ground. Rotational force & ground force ⬆️
