Games Workshop: You get those drawings of the heroes of our brand new toy range?
Will Rees: Sure did boss, real fuckin disgusting just like you asked.
GW: what
The Chicken Orb gives chickens the freedom to forage outside of the chickenyard and in the garden without fear of getting eaten. You pop a chicken in the Orb, secure the orb gate, escort the chicken to a suitable foraging area, and away they go. The chicken moves the orb in its
Always good to remember that you too can, and probably should, own your own fascist fighting, boujie boulangerie busting Count Binface in 28mm cast metal form, just as the wargame gods intended
Will be fascinating to see if Games Workshop can somehow survive a few dozen weirdos being performatively angry at them online, something that is hitherto unprecedented in the long, otherwise peaceful, history of Warhammer.
Maybe we shouldn’t hold the supposedly most important TTRPG event of the year in this state then or if they insist on holding it there not attend.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
A reminder that in Indiana and other states where conservatives hold power, the games you play could literally put a librarian in jail.
Fascism spreads when you stay silent. Demand better from your representatives or kick them to the curb.
Oh, so your RPG’s core resolution test has fail, succeed AND succeed with consequences results.
Impressive, very nice. Now let’s see how your game handles a Makin’ Bacon x Leaning Jowler opposed roll…
Ok, I’d held this back in the hope that more than half a dozen people would see our posts again but 🤷♂️
Anyway for WS6 we spoke with Dan Abnett about the Horus Heresy series, I wanted something very specific to illustrate it & omg
@flopscomics
delivered! BEHOLD!
#warhammer40k
Yeah, sex is great but have you ever had a mate text to say they’d just popped into a 2nd hand shop on holiday and they’ve got some of ‘that weird stuff you’re into’
One of the weird things about the tabletop game space is that it’s a bit like, what if the biggest, best selling and often only widely available music media for most of popular music’s history had been 100% owned, written & edited by Universal & Sony about Universal & Sony acts
Time to announce that after 13+ years, I'll no longer provide news, reviews, or coverage of any sort for
#DnD
. The amount of disdain and disrespect
@Wizards_DnD
now has for reviewers, who believe their first responsibility is honesty to their readers & viewers, is mind-numbing.
Just a reminder that if you’re playing DnD on NYE and you time it so you start your first combat encounter at 8:42 pm you should get your 2nd turn just as it hits midnight
Ever wonder what the rest of the RPG scene looks like?
Using Affinity Designer and our patented WS technology we were able to fill out the background and imagine what games that weren't DnD might be
Incredible
40 years of hard worn progress trying to encourage more nuanced representations in RPGs of the neurological effect of reading blasphemous tomes out the window as this Victorian bro, straight out of the most basic Call of Cthulhu campaign I ran aged 14, pops up
In 1872, when Assyriologist George Smith first translated a tablet of the Epic of Gilgamesh (in front of an audience that included the Prime Minister), he had an epileptic fit and began ripping off his clothes when he realized he had found a variant of the Genesis flood narrative
Small bit of incredibly nerdy trivia I’ve always enjoyed, 1st edition cover of Dungeons & Dragons billed itself as a wargame, whilst the cover of the 1st edition of Warhammer describes it as a role-playing game 🧐
One to remember for when we host the first Wyrd Science pub quiz
We love
@GnarledMonster
's art & we absolutely adore the look of Alex's latest creation, Castle Korpenhalla, a spooky Ravenloft inspired isometric castle to creep through...
Keyed for
@MorkBorg
, Old School Essentials & Alex's own Dungeon Reavers
#TTRPGs
Hey. Start the week right and remember to take a second to make sure you're not being force fed total garbage designed to make you angry and miserable and that instead you're getting the total garbage you actually want...
🚨ROGUE TRADER REPRINT!🚨
The classic
#warhammer40k
Rogue Trader book is getting a brief POD release! yes it’s been available from Warhammer World for a while but we live nowhere near Nottingham & neither do billions of others so this is huge news…
This edition of the game…
I just had to read White Dwarf 104 (August 88) & whilst I won't link it (a PDF is very easy to find) I'm begging wargame designers & players to check it & the 17 (SEVENTEEN) page feature on using robots in Warhammer 40K out
It's incredible & unlike anything you'd ever see today
Back on my Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader read through today & something I appreciate more than ever these days is how in so much of the early art Space Marines are (a) pretty disgusting looking & (b) often getting absolutely rekt
PS. Special shout out to Brother Monkey Christ there
The Wyrd Science editorial board has convened and after almost no debate we can see no other sensible option and are officially endorsing Chaos with Ed Miliband
Oh my…
@DarkHorseComics
have just put The Complete Norse Mythology - an oversized, collected edition of the 18 issue comic adaptation of
@neilhimself
’s book - up for pre-order
out November & will look very nice sat next to our Absolute Sandman books
Behold (half dozen people who will see this) here in all its glory is the cover for WS5 - Future Imperfect!
As ever, incredible work by
@MatPringle
& we’ll have a ltd no. of hand pulled prints to sell in Oct but till then head to to pre-order your copy!
So it turns out, like a rogue egregore, the stupid meme we made for issue 2 has escaped and is apparently now appearing on witchstagram meme accounts.
Anyway, seeing as it’s always the most popular thing we post here we’ve now updated it for the new issue… 🥳🎉
"DREADNOUGHT!"
Well... I knew about the HeroQuest TV advert (see yesterday) but I didn't know there had been a Space Crusade commercial too
If only we'd got a whole 1990s Warhammer 40,000 TV series that had looked like this, how different the world would have been...
is there literally any other family of games (sports, video games, board games, wargames even (just)) other than RPGs where the ridiculous idea that learning a new one is some Herculean task is both so fundamentally embedded in the culture & so incredibly misguided?
Looks like it’s time for my annual re-read of these beauties. congrats to
@neilhimself
& the
@Netflix_Sandman
crew, for the 30+ years I’ve carried these stories around in my head I never thought a live action version would be able to do them justice, v. happy to be wrong it seems
Can we just take a minute to appreciate the dragon on the Dungeons & Dragons Computer Labyrinth game from Mattel Electronics
We stan this iridescent lizard god of the maze
maybe I’m late to the party here but I’ve just found Slug Wizard, what is basically KNOCK! but for mid/late 80s White Dwarf readers/miniature painters and I’m head over heels in love… so gutted physical copies of issue 2 have sold out but free PDF in link in next tweet…
I won't presume to speak for the dead but having had the immense pleasure to spend an afternoon with Ray Harryhausen & see first hand just how much genuine love he had for his creatures & the medium he worked in, I can speak for myself and say that this is a fucking abomination
Luma's start and end keyframes are a game changer. With a sequence of keyframes from the original film, we can seamlessly remaster stop motion classics like "Jason and the Argonauts" as modern single-take action scenes.
Well Wyrd Science 5 has just made it through customs & it looks absolutely marvellous. I just made an unboxing video but all that showed was that I’m both incredibly unsuited to video ‘content’ & I looked like I’ve never opened a box before but for once I’m genuinely very happy!
Exactly a year ago today a lorry drove up & dumped a pallet of magazines on the doorstep, turning what had been a strange dream into wood pulped reality...
So to celebrate our first year I've made both issues PWYW on Itch & DriveThruRPG, links below, please go help yourself...
Good mail day, as our
@MorkBorg
miniatures from
@WestfaliaMinia1
have arrived & we have to say this is the ideal goblin body. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like
WB and New Line struck a multi-year deal with Swedish company Embracer Group AB, which allows the studios to make more adaptations of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The deal includes "multiple" films.
I realise this will fall on deaf ears but I can assure you, there is no Final Dickhead on the internet you can beat, no End of Level Bigot who if you just screenshot one more time you’ll eradicate hate from our hobbies.
Who the fuck cares what horseshit Chapter Master Incellus
Some classic Games Workshop footage to enjoy here, the lads rolling up to GWHQ in the red Porsche, the description of a trap as like one of those fancy new wall beds,
@garychalkpics
’ taste in shirts & I never realised that Joe Dever had a touch of a young Garth Marenghi about him
#OnThisDay
1983: BBC South East at Six explored the magical world of Dungeons & Dragons, with the help of Games Workshop founders Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.
Ok, so we've just posted an update to Kickstarter with the first details of our next issue & that means I can share with you some amazing art from it, in particular a piece by
@elkowalczuk
that accompanies
@AndiEwington
's feature on the new edition of Heroquest. How good's that?!
Almost certain this will be our last week active on this site, so I dunno, to the 20 or so people that will see this feel free to ask any burning questions you’ve ever had (for us)…
Fans of occult mysteries & talking foxes rejoice as the Rivers of London RPG, based on
@Ben_Aaronovitch
's books, is out today from
@Chaosium_Inc
We had the pleasure of speaking with line editor
@CogsandCakes
about it for WS4 & there's lots to enjoy here.
Can we just take a second to appreciate the ridiculously amazing (& ridiculously totally over the top from the POV of the game's needs) world building that went into one of my favourite ever Games Workshop titles, Dark Future
fun car combat game but god I wish we'd got the RPG
oh my, THE GREATEST comic ever, Sláine The Horned God, is getting a deluxe reissue from
@2000AD
& you all NEED this, ideally accompanied by a couple of books on Druidism from Watkins & an eighth of Red Seal to really max its late 80s life changing effect
can we spare a thought for any editors of quarterly print RPG mags out there 🤔 who may have commissioned a big feature last year for their next issue about non-WotC publishers’ relationship with the OGL which they daren’t look at again atm to see how out of date it is already 😑
New Vaesen on the way from
@FreeLeaguePub
!
After a trip across the North Sea we’re heading back to the Mythic North with The Lost Mountain Saga, written by
@ellidilorenzo
& with art by Johan Egerkrans & Anton Vitus
Pre-order & get the PDF now
And here it is,
@MatPringle
's stunning cover to Wyrd Science 4 in all its linocut glory. any ideas what it might be referencing?
Out in April & up for order now, 112 pages of interviews, features & reviews covering everything from investigative RPGs to HeroQuest & back again
Much grief would be saved if it was accepted that a lot of RPGs, especially ‘indie’ ones, belong to a completely separate taxonomical phylum to e.g DnD & actually are descendants of Parlour Games & not Wargames where people got attached to their models & started giving them names
I know licensed RPGs aren’t very indie and it is somehow 14 years old now but it did just occur to me that
@ManMadeMoon
’s MOON would be great source material for a solo/journaling game, thinking
@TimHutchingsFTW
1000 Year Old Vampire converted to (spoiler?) 3 Year Old Astronaut
OK... with our new issue still on pre-order we're making every published issue of Wyrd Science free on Itch & DriveThruRPG!
That's over 400 pages of interviews, features & reviews of RPGs, wargames, boardgames & more...
Pls RT to share the love!
Read on for more info... 🧵1/11
The
#TTRPG
Bundle for Trans Rights Texas has pulled in over $90,000 in its first 24 hours. With around 500 games for $5 (or, of course, more) it's a steal & the money goes to
@texas_trans
&
@transtexas
to help mitigate the egregious decisions made by the state's "leadership"...
Just an idea but if you’re into Warhammer and considering
#NewYearNewArmy
may we also suggest you try building & painting the several hundred quids worth of models you’ve had stuffed in boxes and on shelves for a couple of years first
One of the things I find interesting about the demi-monde of the Kickstarter/big fantasy boardgame scene is at any one time you’ll stumble across adverts for these games that all seem to pulling in seven figure sums & all seem to leave almost exactly zero cultural impact
With no Kickstarter campaign to act as a hype engine I'm afraid you're going to have to get used to seeing these links I'm afraid...
WS4 now up for pre-order, the ULTIMATE magazine for the tabletop/RPG community, loads more details of what's in it here:
Big day for
@GamesOmnivorous
with 2 new books,
@makedatanotlore
's acid western RPG Frontier Scum & a deluxe edition of
@infrabeige
's psychedelic Vaults of Vaarn hitting the shelves, alongside a reprint of our RPG book of '21,
@NateTreme
's Haunted Almanac. Not bad for a tuesday...
Just remembered that we never did an updated version of this banger from 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs' to accompany the new issue, so here you go. If that's what you've been waiting for you can now feel free to buy a copy yourself, I hear it's pretty good.
In your, yes YOUR, opinion what is the best Call of Cthulhu setting/era sourcebook EVER
Which one gives a keeper the best guide to running games in that era/area, has the best ideas, oozes with period perfect shoggoth flavour & is actually enjoyable to use?
£1,000,000… Seriously why bother any more, why? Why put any effort into anything?
As the great Roger Mellie once said “no point feeding pigs cherries when they’re happy with shit”
Anyone need a Random Summoning Circle generator? Just found this by
@RatCasket
and it does exactly what you'd want a Random Summoning Circle generator to do
We posted pics when this first arrived but with the launch of the SRD & a frankly ridiculously generous number of community copies being made available, let’s once more celebrate
@momatoes
frankly beautiful
#RPG
, ARC… Seriously the apocalypse has never looked so good…
DUNGEON OF THE VERY EVIL WIZARD!
- funded in 5 seconds!
- ft a Pacific garbage patch of plastic minis!
- unreconstructed fantasy tropes!
- probably problematic artwork!
- 100 years of campaign time!
- guaranteed to be 24 months late!
& it’ll raise $3.4M & never be heard of again
Sad news that we've lost another legend of British comic art, Kevin O'Neill
From his work on 2000AD strips like Nemesis & collaborations with Alan Moore, to just being far too much for the US Comics Code Authority to handle, he was a truly singular talent
RIP Brother Kevin
If you haven’t tried the Rivers of London RPG yet,
@Chaosium_Inc
have just made ‘The Domestic’ - the solo game based on one of
@Ben_Aaronovitch
’s short stories that’s in the core rule book - free to download. Check it out here:
And read our interview…
Did you know that every time you buy a copy of Wyrd Science, you not only get an amazing independent magazine filled with incredible in-depth writing on RPGs, wargames & boardgames but your money also helps to prevent another gaming podcast or YouTube channel from being launched
Since we’re giving a nod to Games Workshop art from the 80s that goes harder than it has any right to, this piece from my first White Dwarf (issue 81, sept 86) scarred my mind, mainly as I was 9 yrs old & seriously considered gluing these pages together…
Incidentally…
Get ready for Halloween & download for FREE our horror issue ft. a deep dive on the history of horror RPGs & the literary roots of Ravenloft + interviews with those behind Vaesen, Campfire, The Silver Bayonet, ALIEN, Mothership, Spire, The Wretched, The Book of Gaub & more...
Couple of interesting new releases for
@FreeLeaguePub
's Blade Runner RPG just announced. This year we'll get another lavish boxed set 'case file', similar (and possible to run as a follow up) to the starter set & in '24 a new hardback book expansion, Replicant Rebellion...
Whilst we’re on a British 80s game tip, have to say we’re quite taken by the covers for the upcoming 40th anniversary
@fightingfantasy
books from
@ian_livingstone
&
@stevejacksonuk
(and the first since 1986 from Mr Jackson I believe!)…
For Halloween
@FreeLeaguePub
have made one of our favourite RPGs of recent years, VAESEN, free to DL over at
@DriveThruRPG
!
And grab our third issue for free too where we interview Graeme Davis about its Mythic Britain supplement
Ok,
#ZineQuest
&
#ZiMo
/
#ZineMonth
are nearly upon us & once again we will be doing weekly round ups on our website & in our newsletter (see our website for both previous examples and our contact details) so if you are planning something please do get in touch...
OK, enough people seem to have received it to say our 5th issue is officially out & now available to buy in both print & PDF
I think it's great, obvs, but I'd like to convince 2000 more of you that it's worth picking up this week so let's have a look inside
@MatPringle
's cover.
