We are the voice of progressives in Congress. Fighting for working families over corporate interests. Advancing racial and social justice. Working for peace.
BIG NEWS: the Progressive Caucus has secured the inclusion of a $15 minimum wage in the House's pandemic reconciliation package.
This has been a leading priority for our caucus and would give 27 million (!) low-wage workers a raise.
BREAKING: A bipartisan group of nearly 50 members of Congress just introduced legislation to invoke constitutional war powers to end unauthorized United States military involvement in Saudi Arabia’s brutal war in Yemen.
BREAKING: After thoughtful consideration, the Progressive Caucus membership has voted to endorse the Judiciary Act.
This bill would add 4 seats to the Supreme Court, bringing the number of seated justices up to 13.
We're proud to join the fight to restore balance to the bench.
Voters have lost faith their elected representatives will fight for them.
They're sick of watching their interests get rolled by corporations.
They're tired of nothing changing in their daily lives.
They deserve something better — and we're in this fight to deliver it.
Reminder: The actual cost of the Build Back Better Act is not $3.5 trillion, it's $0.
The funding working families need is going to be paid for by taxing the wealthiest and corporations.
We just wrapped a meeting of our 96-member Caucus, and we are clear: our position on infrastructure and Build Back Better remains unchanged.
We will not leave anyone behind.
Our Caucus has been clear: Congress must invest in infrastructure that takes on the climate crisis and meets the needs of working families.
CPC members won't support a bipartisan bill without a bold reconciliation bill to advance our priorities.

NEW: 30 members of Congress are urging President Biden to pursue direct diplomacy for a negotiated settlement to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The letter recognizes the difficulties involved in engaging Russia given its illegal invasion — but make the case that now is the time 🧵
Every job has dignity and every worker deserves to earn a wage that they can live on.
By including $15 minimum wage in the pandemic relief package, Congress has the chance to lift nearly 1 million people out of poverty & raise the minimum wage for the 1st time in over a decade.
The Progressive Caucus will formally oppose the National Defense Authorization Act unless significant action is taken to eliminate wasteful Pentagon spending. Rubber-stamping a record $740 billion for the Pentagon shortchanges millions of families trying to get by in this crisis.

What's actually *in* the Build Back Better Act?
A 🧵
➖ Home-based care for seniors and people with disabilities
➖ Lowering prescription drug costs
➖ Two years free community college
➖ Universal child care
➖ Funding to transition our electric grid to clean energy
Under no circumstances should Congress pass a no-strings-attached corporate bailout.
On Thurs, the CPC sent a letter to

Taxpayer money that goes to bail out big companies must go to workers – not CEOs & shareholders.

BREAKING: After more than a year of negotiations, the Senate has finally passed a reconciliation bill with every Democrat voting in support.
Our view of the just-passed Inflation Reduction Act 🧵
The Progressive Caucus was the first caucus to support a $15 minimum wage, with the introduction of the Pay Workers A Living Wage Act in 2015.
Thank you to
@EdLaborCmte
Chairman
@BobbyScott
and
@SpeakerPelosi
for working with us to get this done.
Progressives in both chambers of Congress are clear: We have to meet this moment and build back better.
Thank you to
@SenSanders
and our Senate colleagues for insisting we stick to the deal and pass the President's entire agenda.
President Lula’s election was a victory for economic justice and multiracial democracy over right-wing authoritarianism.
Just as we did on January 6, we must all denounce this attack, political violence, and those encouraging it.
Breaking news: Thousands of radical backers of Brazil’s far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro breached and vandalized the presidential office building, congress and the Supreme Court on Sunday, and sought to enter other halls of power.
There are 700,000 people who live in Washington, D.C. and not a single one of them is represented with a vote in the Senate.
Just one more reason we need D.C. Statehood now.
The American Rescue Plan is a bold package that delivers on its promise to put money directly in people’s pockets & decisively crush the pandemic. Unlike the response to the Great Recession, this $1.9 trillion bill will deliver desperately needed aid and jumpstart our economy.
Let's be clear about who is affected by the student debt crisis:
➖ 99% of people with federal student loans didn't go to an Ivy League
➖ 97% are low- or middle-income
➖ 40% didn't finish their degree
➖ Nearly 9 mill people age 50+ are carrying student loans
Cancel it.
In the first quarter of 2022:
ExxonMobil made $5.4 billion
BP made $6.2 billion
Chevron made $6.3 billion
And they're *still* allowed to raise gas prices on working people.
Enough. It's time for Congress to take action and ban Big Oil's price gouging.
Agreed. As we’ve long said, $1.9 trillion should be floor for this package, not the ceiling. We can’t afford to constrain ourselves with too small a package when the need in the country is so great.
Psaki on Covid relief bill: "The risk is not that it is too big, this package, the risk is that it is too small and that remains [Biden's] view and it is one he will express today."
Why fight for the Build Back Better Act? Because it's government funding, finally, for the working class.
We're talking about:
➖ Funding for seniors and people with disabilities to have home-based care
➖ Medicare expanded to cover dental, hearing, and vision for the first time
At the urging of our progressive members, Congress voted overwhelmingly this morning to block President Trump from going to war with Iran without congressional input.
This is a hugely important vote.
#NoIranWar
The current minimum wage is a poverty wage. Raising the minimum wage to $15/hr is one of our top priorities for the pandemic rescue package. Let's get this done!
Passing the Build Back Better Act will require standing up to powerful special interests.
That’s why corporate lobbyists, Big Pharma, and Wall Street executives have declared all-out war to stop the bill.
We're not backing down.
This is a shameful decision that will endanger the health of millions.
It is urgent that states and localities distribute the rental assistance funding to tenants and landlords as quickly as possible.
BREAKING: The Supreme Court lifts the federal eviction moratorium. In an unsigned 8-page opinion (with the three liberals dissenting), SCOTUS sides with a group of landlords who argued that the CDC lacked the authority to bar evictions during the pandemic.
During today's January 6th Committee hearing, the country got to see CPC Vice Chair
@RepRaskin
's commitment, brilliance, and experience on full display.
We're proud to call him a leader in the Progressive Caucus, and are enriched by his public service.
Tomorrow, Congress will vote to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.
This vote was built on years of work from
#FightFor15
activists, organizers & low-wage workers. They show us what is possible when working people unite for fair wages & labor rights.
Delaying Build Back Better until 2022 will have immediate consequences.
The House passed a bill agreed to by nearly 50 senators, and with
@POTUS
' promise that he could deliver the votes needed to make it law.
The Senate cannot adjourn for the year until their work is done.
We've been saying for months that we need the Build Back Better Act passed in the Senate before we can vote on infrastructure. In August, we reiterated that position to Congressional Leadership.
Progressives haven't wavered yet, and we have no plans to do so now.
After months of negotiations, the House of Representatives just passed the Build Back Better Act.
We're now closer than ever to delivering real, meaningful change to the American people.
A 🧵 on this moment, and where we go next:
Today, for the first time in 8 years,
@HouseDemocrats
are holding a historic hearing on the $15 minimum wage. We are making the voices of the people heard and taking action to

Big News: The House of Representatives just passed the MORE Act.
This bill — led by CPC members — decriminalizes marijuana, removes it from the list of scheduled substances under the Controlled Substances Act, and enacts key racial, economic, and criminal justice measures.
This proposal is a slap in the face to low-wage workers across the country. We need to end poverty wages, not perpetuate them.
It’s long past time for a $15 minimum wage - Congress must get this done NOW in the pandemic relief package.
#FightFor15
#RaiseTheWage
The time for negotiations has passed. Republicans have made it clear they're not willing to make the investments our communities need.
The voters didn't put us in the majority to check a bipartisanship box — they put us here to deliver for working families. Let's get it done.
In a statement from the WH, Jen Psaki lays out that Capito offered about $50 billion more in additional $, but the President said the offer “did not meet his objectives to grow the economy, tackle the climate crisis and create new jobs.”
Capito and Biden will talk again Monday.
We are pleased to announce that the Rules Package for the 116th Congress will not include the 3/5 supermajority tax provision promoted by House Republicans in recent years.
Last night, the leadership of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, led by
@RepJayapal
and
@RepKatiePorter
, sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Schumer reiterating our position that the pandemic rescue package should be no less than $1.9 trillion.
With massive crises facing our nation, the work of the CPC has never been more critical.
We're proud to introduce our incoming leadership team, led by
@RepJayapal
as Chair,
@RepKatiePorter
as Deputy Chair, and
@Ilhan
as Whip. Meet the full team ⬇️
The House just passed the Freedom to Vote: John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
All that’s now standing between Americans and their constitutional rights is the filibuster.
It’s time for our Senate colleagues to choose: will they be on the side of Jim Crow, or the side of people?
We congratulate the people of Peru for a free and fair election and we welcome a return to well-functioning democratic institutions in the country. For that to happen, the first step is for everyone—in and outside of Peru—to respect the will of the voters.
We strongly disagree with the Senate Parliamentarian's advisory ruling on the $15 minimum wage. The White House and Senate leadership can and should still include the $15 minimum wage increase in the pandemic relief package.
Voters put Democrats in charge of the House, Senate, and White House to deliver transformational change.
We need a reconciliation bill, along with the infrastructure bill, to meet that mandate and enact President Biden's full agenda.
By a 22-point margin, voters agree.
$3.5 trillion isn't an arbitrary number. It's based on the actual cost of the investments working families need.
To those who'd like to go below it, we'll ask: what popular, urgently needed programs would you cut?
We commend
@POTUS
for fulfilling his commitment to ending the longest war in American history, making it clear that there is no military solution in Afghanistan.
Our statement on the ongoing U.S. troop withdrawal:
Powerful op-ed from
@Ilhan
: "But the beauty of this country is not that our democracy is perfect. It’s that embedded in our Constitution and democratic institutions are the tools to make it better."
Today
@POTUS
issued an executive order to promote competition and redistribute corporate power across several sectors of the economy.
It's going to be truly transformational, and will have real, tangible results for consumers, small businesses, and working people. 🧵
In 1965, Congress passed the Higher Ed Act. It grants the executive a right to "compromise, waive, or release any right, title, claim, lien or demand...including any equity or any right of redemption."
In other words:
@POTUS
has authority to cancel student debt. Time to use it.
As our 11 Senate colleagues said this week, there was a deal.
They would vote on the infrastructure bill because the Build Back Better Act would move simultaneously, to guarantee that both bills — the President's entire agenda — pass.
We're holding up our end of that bargain.
The current federal minimum wage is a starvation wage. It keeps families trapped in poverty, erases the dignity of their work, and allows billionaires and big corporations to exploit workers. Workers need – and deserve – a federal minimum wage of $15 an hour.
The idea that the Senate has to choose between passing Build Back Better and voting rights is a false choice. The people elected us to deliver — not pit their priorities against each other.
The Senate can, and must, do both. Without delay.
Our communities need relief NOW.
The U.S. government currently gives Big Oil and Gas more than $20.5 billion a year through tax breaks.
It is past time we stop rewarding polluters for poisoning our communities and accelerating the climate crisis. To Build Back Better, we need to end fossil fuel subsidies.
The resolution, led by
@RepPeterDeFazio
,
@RepJayapal
,
@RepNancyMace
, and
@RepAdamSchiff
comes 7+ years after unauthorized U.S. participation began.
Since 2015, the Saudi airstrikes and blockade have killed hundreds of thousands of people and threatened millions more with famine.
It is unacceptable that the House adjourned without urgently passing legislation to keep people in their homes, when more than 11.4 million people will begin facing eviction tomorrow.
The moratorium was meant to conclude with the end of the pandemic, and it is nowhere near over.
Progressive Caucus co-founder
@SenSanders
said it best:
We're not going to build bridges just so our people can sleep underneath them.
We're not leaving anyone behind.
Today's bench was filled by a partisan, right-wing effort to entrench an anti-democratic faction and erode human rights.
It has gutted the Voting Rights Act and public sector unions, entrenched unconstitutional abortion bans, and failed to overturn the discriminatory Muslim Ban.
When a 50 cent increase in gas breaks a family's budget, the problem isn't only gas prices. It's that too many people are living in poverty.
That's why we're fighting for legislation to lower the costs of housing, prescription drugs, and more. Working people need us to deliver.
We’re pleased to see the House Democratic Caucus come to a consensus on the need to pass the budget resolution without further delay.
And we remain united with Leadership and
@POTUS
in our mission to enact the entire Build Back Better agenda.
Our statement👇
To recap, the
#TrumpBudget

❌Cuts Medicare
❌Cuts Medicaid
❌Cuts SNAP
❌Cuts housing aid
❌Cuts EPA programs
❌Ends student loan forgiveness
Families, seniors, students, the disabled, the poor & the planet would all suffer – to pay for Trump’s billionaire tax breaks.
Republicans are going to try make this sound complicated, but it’s really simple:
They want to replace taxes on millionaires and billionaires by increasing taxes on working people.
New: Rep. Buddy Carter confirms to me that his Fair Tax Act will get its first-ever floor vote as part of speaker talks. Bill abolishes IRS, eliminates tax code, replacing income taxes with consumption tax - rolling back pieces of GOP tax law
It was a demand of the 20 holdouts
Manchin on the filibuster. Says it's been "The tradition of the Senate here in 232 years now..we need to be very cautious what we do..That's what we've always had for 232 years. That's what makes us different than any place else in the world.
As a co-equal governing body, Congress cannot sit by while this attack on the constitution continues unchecked.
The urgent work to restore American democracy must include expanding the Supreme Court.
This is a huge victory. We applaud
@POTUS
for listening to the clarion call of our members, colleagues, and communities around the country — led by
@RepCori
.
This action will save lives, and it wouldn't have happened without her committed, clear-eyed activism.
CONFIRMED: President Biden is expected to announce a new federal eviction moratorium to replace the one that expired on Saturday — targeting counties with elevated rates of coronavirus infections, according to WH and Hill sources. It's expected to cover 90% of renters population.
As the saying goes: The people united can never be defeated.
Our communities are done with corporate-backed half-measures from Congress. We're going to pass the Build Back Better Act and deliver for all those who've been left behind.
House Dems will vote next week to
#LowerDrugCosts
. Progressives are seeking key improvements to take on pharma greed:
⬆️Increase the # of drugs negotiated on every year
❌End the Medicare negotiation ban
📈Stop pharma price spikes for millions
✅Expand benefits to the uninsured
As our House colleagues emphasize in this piece, the debate isn't progressives vs. moderates.
Build Back Better is supported by 96% of Democrats and 70% of the public. It's the President's agenda and the Democrats' agenda.
We're going to get it done.
“If you don’t want to go back, you have to fight.
If you don’t want a ban on contraception,
If you don’t want a ban on same-sex marriage,
If you don’t want our trans kids criminalized, you have to fight.
We’re going to hold each other up, and we’re going to fight.”

BREAKING: The House just passed the Inflation Reduction Act.
After more than a year of negotiations and even longer campaigning on these issues, the Democratic majority is sending legislation to tackle climate action, tax fairness, and expand health care to the President’s desk.
In the House of Representatives, the Judiciary Act was introduced by 3 CPC members:
@RepJerryNadler
,
@RepHankJohnson
, and
@RepMondaire
. In the Senate, it was introduced by
@SenMarkey
.
We're grateful to our colleagues for their leadership in this fight.
In August,
@POTUS
cancelled up to $20,000 in student debt for 43 million people.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will decide if this desperately needed relief can finally be delivered.
This is a matter of economic and racial justice. The President's executive order must stand.
The CPC also ensured inclusion of the $15 minimum wage in the House plan. We remain extremely disappointed that the minimum wage bill was not included. The minimum wage remains essential policy and we must deliver on this issue.
As Progressive Caucus Whip,
@Ilhan
has been instrumental in building momentum for bold, impactful legislation like
#RaiseTheWage
and the strengthened
#LowerDrugsCostsNow
Act.
We are so grateful for her leadership & tireless work!
Yemen was already the site of the worst humanitarian crisis in the world — 16M people on the brink of starvation.
Now, with 30% of Yemen's wheat coming from Ukraine, we could see hunger increase 5x. Recent Saudi airstrikes have killed and injured 4x more civilians than in 2021.
CPC Co-Chairs
@repmarkpocan
&
@RepJayapal
denounce
@realDonaldTrump
for signing "the death warrant of countless innocent Yemeni men, women, and children" and vow to "pursue every legislative means of ending this immoral conflict."
And we're going to pay for it all by finally making the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share in taxes.
These are the urgently needed, long-overdue investments for working families that we're fighting for.
It's time to deliver.
The House Rules package just passed and it included big reforms to PAYGO, the Motion to Recommit & Truth in Testimony.
For months,
@USProgressives
have worked to negotiate these changes so big ideas don’t get bogged down by procedural hurdles or harmful austerity measures.
Progressives understand our mandate in this governing moment: Deliver for working people, and leave no one behind.
We've made important progress, but the work isn't done. Our communities need relief now.
That's why today we're releasing our executive action agenda for
@POTUS
.
In recent weeks, the risk of nuclear war has increased, fighting escalated, and global economic insecurity deepened.
Thousands of people are dead and tens of millions more impacted. Skyrocketing prices in wheat, fertilizer, and fuel are driving global hunger and poverty.
➖ Extending the child tax credit to address child poverty
➖ Roadmap to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS holders, essential workers, and farmworkers
➖ Universal Pre-K
➖ Ending tax subsidies for Big Oil and Big Gas
➖ Funding for communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis
We urge members to stand in solidarity with
@RepCori
’s direct action at the Capitol today to prevent millions of people from being evicted from their homes tomorrow.
Our mandate is clear: We must save lives.
