It is my pleasure to introduce JORMUNGANDR WALHALLAENSIS, a new mosasaur from North Dakota! I’ve worked on Jorgie with Clint & Nathan for the past ~1.5 yrs & I am BEYOND stoked to finally share it with everyone!

@Paleoartologist
you know what fine, i'll share one (1) ""controversial"" take:
while the "overrated" jokes are fun,
t. rex was, in every metric, one of the most insane organisms to ever evolve & absolutely deserves every ounce of love & attention that it gets

This incredible specimen
@AMNH
is a nearly complete mummified (‼️) Edmontosaurus, a duck-billed

that lived alongside
#TRex
& Triceratops in the Hell Creek Formation of western N. America! Look closely for the preserved skin!!

"fake crab is why people don't take paleontology seriously!!"
consider instead: people don't take this field seriously bc of the way folks collectively react to things like fake crab

For an animal as common in museums as mosasaurs (> 4,000 specimens in N.A. alone), you may be surprised to hear that there are still 2 *fundamental* unanswered questions about them: what are they, & how many times did they become marine?

This is the skull of Coelophysis

this is not directed at anyone/anything in particular
but
complete skeletal diagrams of animals known from individual bones will never not be funny to me
happy saturday i see that we are discussing monophyly
friendly reminder that evolutionary trees are nested hierarchies
meaning: you *cannot* evolve *out* of the bigger groups to which you belong, only become more specific *within* them
so,
birds are reptiles,
& you're a fish

All mosasaurs were undoubtedly unpleasant to be around, but Prognathodon strikes me as particularly nasty, with its serrated teeth, massive jaw muscle attachment sites, & built in angry eyebrows! 🦎😈

in 2020. So what makes its jaws so deadly?

! Did mosasaurs make good mothers? Hard to be sure! While some modern lizard mothers care for their young (for up to a year!) & mosasaurs did give live birth, we just don't have slam-dunk

evidence of maternal care...yet!

Recently, I got to play with (study!) this lovely Estesia
#fossil
@AMNH
for a ~secret project~!
Estesia is a large venomous

from Cretaceous Mongolia. Though it looks a bit like a varanid, it's thought to be more closely related to gila monsters

Meet Mosasaurus hoffmannii IRScNB R 303. It is one of the most immaculately preserved Mosasaurus skulls we have; check out that near-perfect palate!! It even has both vomeronasal fenestrae - the openings used by the forked tongue to "taste smells."
today, work involves opening dozens of drawers,
hunting down the answer to a 70 million year old question
have i mentioned that i love my job?

! This week I had the pleasure of visiting the

collections! In addition to taking photos & measurements, I made 3D photogrammetric models of specimens for an upcoming

project (& for fun, like this cast of Tylosaurus ‘Sophie’)
...but wait, there's more!
Hope you all find this mosasaur/Jorgie-themed playlist as fun to listen to as we all did while writing up, proofing, & illustrating the new lad!

This stunning specimen is none other than Tylosaurus FHSM VP-2295; specifically, a CT scan of it! CT scans allow study of each bone individually in 3D & study of internal anatomy (eg, blood vessels) without damaging the fossil!

Welcome to the

Let's kick things off with one of my favorite finds of 2021: the 1st in-situ (='in-place') unequivocal, non-tooth mosasaur fossils from the Hell Creek Formation (HCF)!!!

Fun fact: this critter does not exist!
This is Clidastes liodontus

Though it's part of their name,
#dinosaurs
are NOT lizards! But another group of extinct reptiles *are* - the biggest & baddest lizards to ever live,
#mosasaurs
