happy saturday i see that we are discussing monophyly friendly reminder that evolutionary trees are nested hierarchies meaning: you *cannot* evolve *out* of the bigger groups to which you belong, only become more specific *within* them so, birds are reptiles, & you're a fish

Recently, I got to play with (study!) this lovely Estesia #fossil @AMNH for a ~secret project~! Estesia is a large venomous #lizard from Cretaceous Mongolia. Though it looks a bit like a varanid, it's thought to be more closely related to gila monsters #paleontology #museum

Happy #MosasaurMonday ! Meet Mosasaurus hoffmannii IRScNB R 303. It is one of the most immaculately preserved Mosasaurus skulls we have; check out that near-perfect palate!! It even has both vomeronasal fenestrae - the openings used by the forked tongue to "taste smells."
