One of the, in my eyes, greatest paintings of its time vs a soulless bunch of garbage.
It's btw. "Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth, and there is a reason it's painted this way.
It appears the Titanochampsa piece was so universally loved that I put some more effort into it, refined light and shapes and added some more details.
i now also put it on Redbubble, link below.
Retweeting this again because I think it's important to break the cliche of the "normal" herbivore. In documentaries and books these are the background creatures and prey animals. And yet! Look at these soft tissue structures! And they even move! There is muscle control here!
This

pieces is inspired by a painting by Edward Hopper called "Nighthawks". In many ways I reversed the image. Inside became outside, loneliness became companionship and although I use a very similar color palette my version feels a lot warmer.
Not knowing is part of the fun in paleo, repost with one of the mysteries that intrigue you!
Mine today is: we have no fucking clue why Brachiosuchus had such long arms!
Can't get my mind off certain animals some time. I have tons of doodles of Therizinosaurus using it's claws. Newest idea: why should their keratin sheet look like the bone below? Preening claws in birds are great example of this. So why not play a little with that.
Gular glands in crocodiles are one thing, but many are also not aware of the facial and movable glands in muntjacs. These structures aren't really sexy so they are often omitted from documentaries.
Im bored so let's do something artists,

Reposting because I think a few people didn't realize what I did there yesterday.
Centaurism is here not a biological state but a social one. Females can and will move on their own. Juveniles don't show this behavior. Both parties are looking for food and share it, but the...

Slight spoilers ahead in the posts below...
Oh wow, rarely a tweet go so much attention, here, have an improved version of the little animation I made with this.
Added diver animation and a self made sound effect.
Auqatic sloth, marine gharials, weird and wonderful whales, penguins and giant sea birds, turtles and giant sharks. All that is part of the Pisco formation. A Miocene slice of time that deserves more attention.

Having seen the fossil material: that's not how this new species looked like at all! The lower jaw suggests a very different head shape!
Once again AI just produces generic slop, because it lacks any understanding of what it's even supposed to do.
Another new species, another exciting discovery tainted by the use of AI images...
Marambionectes is a new plesiosaur genus from Antarctica. Unfortunately, the describing authors resorted to using AI-generated images to promote their research. Not a good look.

The biggest problem with extinct megafauna isn't to keep it from breaking out (even with large theropods) but to provide enough space and food for such colossal stomachs.
No fancy electrical fences needed when your enclosure design is smart enough.

I absolutely hate that that AI post is now my most liked tweet on here. Also got my first community note that way.
Yes yes, it's not genuine and saying that people with very similar sentiment exist isn't satisfying, but also: I would not call this kind of rage bait satire.
And some more examples on how one could build enclosures for a

Dinopithecus, Paradolichopithecus, Cartelles, hypothetical first New World monkey.
Some time ago we speculated about "saurojams", dams caused by sauropods like Brachiosaurus when their carcasses are washed together. Well, apparently there is now such a locality.
SVP abstract
I think one of my favorite aspects about working with sauropods is, that their long neck, tail and enormous size forces you to play with perspective and composition (or to get a bigger piece of paper) (1/2)

Of course, I have a bunch, mostly in the shape of the

In this case we have a few Protopithecus in a composition inspired by Edward Hoppers "Nighthawks".
Feel free to share your pieces inspired by classics from art history!
This painting was very inspired by the girl with a Pearl earring by Johannes Vermeer.
It would be fun to start an art train of paleoart with classical or other inspirations!

We did today an Ediacara touch tank, the Anteosaurus valley, a Drepanosaurus aviary and our own little Solnhofen lagoon.
One of my favorite animations from the series, it's holds up incredibly well.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of the cases where they animated on top of existing footage, of orcas maybe.

Look at this bullshit. REALLY? You publish about a Mid Jurassic island flora and you have to use AI IN THE PAPER?
However the bigger "crime" here is that I know this locality, I have seen at least two papers of on this before, and...
You might have noticed that the test images for the

Wonderful creative use of space for educational purposes. There is no complete specimen and you wouldn't be able to fit one in there standing, in addition the flanks offer surfaces for texts and graphics.

This AI crap is a crusty fungal infection that for some time now tries to sneak into the territory of paleoart. While it's basically impossible for it to produce novel or real paleoart it does do harm to the perception of the uninformed. Not to mention all the theft.
