Jack Gohlke and Oakland were the story of the NCAA Tournament in the Round of 64. Helped deliver an epic upset, in front of 6M sets of eyeballs.
Oakland asked for the game ball for Gohlke, who, you’ll recall, made 10 3’s.
The
@NCAA
said nope.
Unfuckingbelievable.
This is a historic day for LGBTQ+ representation in sports.
Carl Nassib, Penn State alum who plays DE for the Las Vegas Raiders, has come out as gay.
First active NFL player to do so, and in making the announcement, he donated $100K to

Gotta admit, I did not have on my bingo card Joe Biden convincing Republicans, on live TV for all the world to see, to commit to protecting Social Security and Medicare. That's a stable genius.
#Tigers
Spencer Torkelson got lucky on his first home-run ball. Fan gladly gave it up for free.
Postgame, Torkelson brought the kid and his dad into the
#Tigers
dugout and signed a bat, baseballs and batting gloves, and gave them two authenticated tickets from his MLB debut.
Truth is, the fan isn't impressed by stuff or money, but rather the memory. He says he wanted the ball, he says he wanted the history, even if only he knows for sure 50 years from now that it's THE real ball.
So, good on you.
Albert Pujols has $300 million. He'll be OK.
I asked newly minted PGA Tour winner Ryan Brehm what percentage of the $666,000 winner's check his caddie -- wife Chelsey -- will receive.
"Probably the largest in PGA Tour history -- 51%."
In the court filing for a temporary restraining order, Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Board of Regents are listed as the plaintiffs, and Tony Petitti and the Big Ten Conference are listed as the defendants.
It took less than a month for the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office to issue charges to seven MSU players following the tunnel incident. It sat on the Mazi Smith charges for nearly seven weeks.
Waiting for explanation from the prosecutor and Michigan football.
From
@chengelis
: Michigan star Mazi Smith is facing felony charges for carrying a concealed weapon. The original offense date: Oct. 7. He has played in all 12 games. (For comparison: EMU's Emoni Bates faced gun charges, and was suspended immediately.)
Pretty absurd that when shit hits the fan, refs, umps and officials have to answer only to one pool reporter, for just a few questions. Makes me respect the hell out of Jim Joyce, who invited the entire waiting press corps into his locker room after blowing the Galarraga game.
I am absolutely crushed today. Jerry Green -- a Detroit News legend, the only person to cover each of the first 56 Super Bowls, and one hell of a man -- died this morning at 94. He was just texting me about the World Baseball Classic the other day.
For the sixth time ever, the same school will send teams to the Final Four and Frozen Four in the same year. Get this: Our fair state is the only member of that club.
* 1964: Michigan
* 1992: Michigan
* 1993: Michigan
* 1999: Michigan State
* 2001: Michigan State
* 2018: Michigan
Jason Benetti: "The infield here at Citi Field is becoming a pinball machine, and the
#Tigers
are getting a free game." I mean, that's pretty damn good.
This was the first full Bally Sports Detroit broadcast I've listened to with Jason Benetti as the
#Tigers
play-by-play man, and, man, that was a treat. He's such an easy listen, nothing seems forced, he's quick-witted, and he tells stories -- a lost art in baseball broadcasting.
Special day in East Lansing: The Breslin Center just became a Big Ten groundbreaker in opening a sensory room for kids with autism, thanks to
@FrediThePizzamn
and former MSU basketball player Anthony Ianni.
Full comment: Tigers TV voice Jason Benetti has cerebral palsy. He said he gets reactions that don't completely represent who he is "as a whole person."
"I think that's how Detroit gets treated," he said. "I don't like seeing people and a whole place get reduced to anything."
If even only for a day or two, it’s nice to see Comerica Park alive again. Younger fans don’t even realize that it used to be like the us every night in Detroit, for several years, not really that long ago.
Bravo,
#Tigers
Niko Goodrum.
He has purchased 1,440 cases of bottled water and will deliver them to Flint on Monday.
He doesn't make much more than the major-league minimum.
I’m sorry, every NFL team turns a profit before they sell a single ticket or hot dog or foam finger. I’m just not buying that any NFL team is gonna blink over Ben Johnson’s asking price. He chose Detroit. What a concept.

Lot of folks just don’t get why Ely Hydes — the
#Tigers
fan who caught the Pujols ball — could turn down so much stuff or so much cash.
Here’s some perspective: After such tragedy a year ago, now more than ever it’s memories that matter most.
Suspensions are the least of the worries for several MSU football players. There is more than enough video evidence, plus police witnesses, to file assault charges. UM, MSU police departments both are investigating. Many interviews were conducted late Saturday and early Sunday.
As
@umichbaseball
continues this wild ride at the College World Series, sophomore catcher Joe Donovan believes -- knows, actually -- his late brother, Charlie, who was supposed to be the shortstop on this team, is right there with him.
Let’s cut through the nonsense here. The
#Tigers
absolutely can afford Carlos Correa, especially when you consider Miguel Cabrera is off the books in two years, and when you consider the
#Tigers
increased TV revenue. If they don’t sign him, it’s because they made a choice.
Dan Dickerson used one “Yellowhammer” to describe a Sonny Gray curveball, in honor of Jim Price, and then says that word now is forever retired from
#Tigers
broadcasts.
Michigan assistant coach Mike Hart did interview for the WMU head-coaching job following the Big Ten championship game, though it would appear he’ll be staying at UM. He’s the only UM staffer known to have interviewed for WMU. OC Sherrone Moore was on wish list, but said no.
JK Simmons and Dan Dickerson danced around it during the Whitaker ceremony — while Lou didn’t mention it. So, allow me: The Baseball Hall of Fame is not complete without Lou Whitaker.
Did any
#Lions
fan ever consider, for at least one second, that maybe Bob Quinn knows more about football than you?
It's a fair question, no?
I mean, just curious.
Rod Allen, long-time
#Tigers
TV broadcaster, is getting back in the game. The
#Marlins
announced he will join their broadcast team as an analyst for 2022.
Ferris State men's hoops was 75 miles out of Indy when it turned the bus around. Next stop: Food.
"We'll be going to the best steakhouse we can find," coach Andy Bronkema said. "Our last supper will not be McDonald's."
The senior class was one win from setting a program record.
I normally can’t stand using refs/officials/umps as an excuse.
The hell with that. This is one of the biggest screw jobs I’ve ever seen, one atrocious call after another.
My esteemed colleague
@chengelis
was surprised by being inducted into the Michigan Stadium Press Box Hall of Fame at halftime tonight. “I would’ve dressed better!”
SOURCE: Sports betting will begin in Michigan either week of March 9 or 16. They're just waiting for the final sign-off from the Gaming Control Board.
In other words, yes, sports betting will be live in time for March Madness.
These will be live bets.
Online coming in 2021.
MSU's James Piot wrote an emotional letter to the NCAA appealing rule that forbids a college coach from caddying for an amateur player in a pro tournament, and he has *won* the appeal. MSU's Dan Ellis will caddie for Piot at the Masters. Credits Ellis for getting him to Augusta.
I don’t get it. When I was in college, a big win never put me in the mood to burn shit. It put me in the mood to drink 10 $2.50 pitchers of Busch Light at Rick’s.
Jim Harbaugh is 28-9 in three seasons at Michigan. Wolverines were 20-18 in three seasons prior. Let's stop with "total bust" talk. Has he lived up to expectations? Of course not. But the sky's not falling.
BREAKING: Frank Beckmann, longtime Detroit radio personality who called UM football,
#Tigers
and
#Lions
games, is in hospice care, his wife has told The News. He's not expected to make it through the weekend.
Egoless. A champion for others in the business. A husband. A father of three. And a friend to just about everybody he came across.
Jamie Samuelsen, a fixture on the Detroit sports-media landscape since 1994 and a 97.1 host since 2012, has died at 48.
Coming to the realization I was gay was scary, but I was lucky. I had great family and friends who let me to live my truth.
Many gay kids don't find themselves in such a good place.
That's why Carl Nassib's coming-out is an important story.
My column:
MSU's Tom Izzo got fired up about about whether to play or not to play, in the wake of the Coach K comments: "I respect everybody that's doing what's best for them ... except if you don't wear a mask. Then I have no respect for you."
Last year, Macomb Dakota got transfer Jack Ballantyne (because De La Salle signed off) and benefited greatly. This year, Dakota wouldn't sign off on Thomas Kithier's move to Clarkston, and so now he's ineligible all year. Wow. That's some sour stew.
I feel that the best sports owners are diehard fans themselves. Chris Ilitch, meanwhile, needed notes yesterday to list off players in his organization.
Rob Manfred likes seven-inning games, runners on second base in extra innings and minimum batter requirements for relievers — but he doesn’t like Ken Rosenthal. Manfred has been bad for baseball since the moment he got the job, and he’s gotten a whole lot worse since.
A message to the folks of Dearborn: Books with LGBTQ themes or characters won’t make your child gay. But they will help make your gay child feel like they’re not alone.
Oakland fans have absolutely taken over the hotel lobby, so much so that Kentucky fans staying here are afraid to walk through. They’re getting booed, mercilessly and hilariously.
Sunday’s Lions-Bucs game was the most-watched NFL divisional playoff game on NBC in 30 years, averaging 40.4 million viewers via NBC and Peacock. Viewership peaked at 49.1M.
It’s been reported repeatedly that Jake Bates’ last made field goal was in high school. But that’s not true.
He actually *never* made a field goal in high school.
His 64-yarder to win it for the Michigan Panthers was his first ever made FG in an actual game.
That’s bananas.
Former
#Tigers
ace Justin Verlander and Kate Upton announce donations to Detroit.
* 25,000 masks to DPD.
* Partnering with Ford, face shields for Detroit police officers, paramedics, fire fighters.
* Thermometers for police.
* And meals for Frontlines Detroit.
BREAKING: The PGA Tour is "close" to finalizing a deal to bring a tournament to the City of Detroit. Likely Detroit Golf Club. Likely summer of 2019. Likely sponsored by Quicken Loans. The details:
This is one of the victims of today’s horrific tragedy in Oxford. Tate Myre, 16. He was going to play football at the next level. He died in a patrol car that was rushing him to the hospital.
BREAKING: Citing "misuse" of court procedure and harassment of Mark Dantonio and others, a federal magistrate has recommended the total dismissal of Curtis Blackwell's case against the MSU parties.
Case against the cops should go on, the magistrate said.
Ilitch Companies just announced $1.5 billion in new projects in District Detroit.
In related news, I am announcing I would like someone other than Lucy to hold the football.
Days after
#Tigers
traded Justin Verlander to Houston in 2017, a Detroit front-office official told me that didn’t necessarily mean the end of the JV-
#Tigers
story.
Flash forward:
#Tigers
expect to contend in 2022, JV is a free agent after 2021, he’s tight with AJ Hinch.
