This year is my 30th season helping to monitor Roseate Terns on Coquet island by ringing. What an honour and privlege to work on a species in such jeopardy and with a group of superb and committed people. Both photos by

Hawfinch, for at least it’s third day in our garden. Quite happily feeding on the discarded, by the ‘spuggies’, black sunflower seeds! It’s obviously wary of cats and sparrowhawk, but also Jackdaws!

Never thought I'd utter these words but thank goodness some Roseate Tern are heading away to winter quarters from the Northumberland coast, and some have even managed to get young off!
Seventy years ago today my Dad cycled the few miles from the family at Choppington, to Mona Taylors Maternity Hospital, near Morpeth in south east Northumberland. For on that very snowy morning my Mum had just given birth to me and I saw the world for the very first time!
Had a run in with a Pheasant shooter this morning. I was on a public path, he shot his quarry in my direction. I suggested that it wasn’t a good idea to fire in direction of PROW, he said he wasn’t. I asked, then why did the bird fall within 25m of me?
Sooty Tern on the Northumberland list. Made all the sweeter after all the years of hurt! Good to see so many of the North/land birding community connecting with it.Only 10 mins drive but a convoy of 8 agricultural vehicles blocking the junction in the village got my heart racing!
Forty years ago today (15th October 1982), Muriel and I went on our first date. We went to the Keel Row pub in Seaton Delaval. What an amazing journey we’ve had so far.
Inca Tern (Larosterna inca) It is the only member of the genus Larosterna. It is uniquely plumaged and breeds on the coasts of Peru and Chile where it is largely restricted to the Humboldt Current. A fabulous 'looker' and seeing it in Arica Harbour fulfilled a small ambition.

Wansbeck General Hospital this afternoon. Great Surgery team led by Mr M Sangster and fantastic Ward 10 crew including porters, cleaners and medical staff! You all looked after me so well. Thank you.
Holy ‘Crabalocker fishwife’! Like everyone who has seen or heard about the Walrus in Seahouses Harbour It wasn’t what I expect to see in Northumberland at any time, but there you are. That’s birdwatching for you.

Home, upright and in canny fettle. Thank you to the brilliant

. And a massive thank you to all of my friends for their thoughts, good wishes, and information. I'm not worthy! Onwards and upwards!
The future is Rosy! A ringed Roseate Tern near the jetty at the ‘mighty’ RSPB Coquet Island, Northumberland. Let me introduce 96P4, ringed as a chick on the Island on 07/07/2011

The County bird of Northumberland, the Eider! Now to be seen, and heard (OoOoOoOo) displaying in harbours and inshore waters, this one at Amble on the only calm day of the weekend!

A huge shift of Pink-feet again this morning over Alnmouth. These birds went South over the Bay. Obviously birds held up by yesterday’s poor weather. Standby for two minutes fix of exhilaration, at least it was for me!

Just caught up the the Sky Arts programme ‘Painting birds with Jim and Nancy’. Great to spend time with these two and the production team. Also, we got the chance to show off bits of the Northumberland coast and it’s birds. Great experience.

In the final year of the EU LIFE project, we're delighted to announce that the Roseate Terns of Coquet Island have broken the breeding pair record for the 5th consecutive year! Today we discovered our 126th nest and there could still be more to come.....
So taken aback that the brilliant
@AnnCleeves
gave me a name check, unless there is another, in the latest ‘Vera’ epic ‘Rising Tide’. Funnily enough Ann, I have seen Paddyfield Warbler in Northumberland, but it was in 1974.
‘May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again’ ‘Gan canny’ my friends love and peace to everyone! X
I will not forget that the MP for Berwick

voted against giving free school meals to the most vulnerable children in our society whilst enjoying the benefits of subsidised, at taxpayers expense, food and drink in the House of Parliament
Thirty-eight years ago today on a snowy afternoon in Morpeth, Northumberland, Muriel and I got married. We’ve had some fantastic adventures together, pictured in the early 1990’s, around the world. Happy anniversary sweetheart!
Bought this painting of Roseate Tern (the reason for purchase) and Arctic Terns by the wonderful Ian Wallace a number of years ago, but I misplaced soon after. A random rediscovery this morning of it tucked in a book was quite amazing, I’m delighted!
@Stewchat
This time last week I started two days of Birding and filming, looking for Curlews, with the splendid Jim Moir and wonderful Nancy Sorrell for Sky Arts (Painting birds with Jim and Nancy) on the Aln Est and Holy Island. Jim and Nancy gave this picture as thanks! A treasure!
Closer and closer they come, the advancing hordes of Puffins waiting to get their breeding season underway; who will be the first to break ranks and land on RSPB Coquet island, off the Northumberland coast.
It was 37 years ago today! We may have had snow showers on the day but its been sunny ever since!
It has often been said that Muriel deserves a medal the size of a dustbin lid and I cannot disagree with that!
Holy Island fulfilled eastern promise again today with this Red-flanked Bluetail at the Snook which gave such a show! The supporting cast of birds and birders was superb!

What a very pleasant surprise this evening. A Northumberland and British tick of not one but two Caspian Terns at East Chevington. Well done to John Thompson. Yes another example of how poor a digiscoper I am, but you can recognise the birds. They never stay long!
@NTBirdClub
Glad to be back onto Coquet Island today, for my first visit of the year, but not before seeing the fantastic first for Britain, Grey-headed Lapwing found by
@Gary_D_Woodburn
at Low Newton. Plenty of Puffins and my first Roseate Tern of the year. Good luck to the Rosies.
A totally unexpected visitor to our garden, near Alnmouth Northumberland, this morning; a male Ring-necked Parakeet (Psittacula krameri). These birds are considered a pest in 'the south'. However, here in the north and away from Newcastle, they are still a bit of a 'novelty'.
‘Land Ho’ leaving Coquet Island last night. The island certainly had a late August feel as many birds had already left, either on migration or sadly died! The breeding season of 2022 will, for all the wrong reasons,long live in our memories. I hope it’s not repeated!
Sad news just in, Brian Little has passed away! For many Brian will be synonymous with Northumbrian ornithology. He leaves a fine legacy of inspiring many birdwatchers/ornithologists (me included) and groundbreaking work on Merlin, Goosander and more. And love of Kielder. RIP BL
A fabulous Little Stint on the shore at Boulmer, Northumberland, amongst the throng of waders which included Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Ruff, Dunlin, Knot, Sanderling and Redshank.
Unprecedented (?) numbers of Razorbills still in near shore and many just sitting, like this, and not feeding, whilst RT Divers nearby catching fish. Odd!
