This, fellow Whovians, is it! My first memory of
#DoctorWho
! This exact moment, switching the TV on aged 4 to be greeted with this! To say I was captivated would be an understatement! Feel free to share your earliest memories, too 🙂
The Third Doctor defending himself from a pterodactyl attack with a mop has to be one of the most ‘Whoish’ moments in the entire history of the programme! Is it any wonder that I love this show so much?
#DoctorWho
A contender for one of the greatest lines in the history of
#DoctorWho
! Incidentally, I’m only a few minutes in and I’m reminded again of what a rich, complex script Survival is, bolstered by pitch perfect performances! So which is it for you: dead or Birmingham?
You will never convince me that these are not the best Dalek voices of all the Daleks’ TV appearances! The performances (I never think Roy Skelton gets the recognition as a Dalek voice artist that he deserves), and that beefy modulation 👌
#DoctorWho
#Daleks
I love Roger Delgado as The Master but his performance never gives me chills. Certain scenes of Peter Pratt’s Master, and this scene from Anthony Ainley, give my goosebumps goosebumps! Bloody terrifying and sublimely performed. One of my favourite scenes in
#DoctorWho
R.I.P. Georgina Hale, another
#DoctorWho
legend gone to that great after show party in the sky. An actress who seemed to be in everything in the 80s and early 90s but not a face I’ve seen in recent times! Wonderful, perfect casting as Daisy K. Happiness will prevail! 😢
Resistance was useless! Those covers! How could I not? This is the start of a slippery slope, I can tell! Fans of a certain vintage will understand why!
#DoctorWho
I always forget that the Second
#DoctorWho
was munching on Jelly Babies long before the Fourth one had even left the building site! Even though I’ve seen this countless times, I was expecting him to say Sherbet Lemon!
No Doctor Who for me tonight, as I am still bereft of a VHS player. So, it’s time for an Agatha Christie instead. Can you believe that I’ve never seen the Margaret Rutherford Marple movies??!! Time to rectify that oversight now!
Quite an emotional day here at Mestor headquarters. With the arrival of
#DoctorWho
EDA The Deadstone Memorial, I now own every original Doctor Who novel published in the wilderness years: Virgin NAs, MAs, and BBC EDAs and PDAs. Absolutely ecstatic 🤩
#DoctorWhoBooks
📚
Is there any
#DoctorWho
story that channels and explores that end of an era feeling better than The Green Death? I always watch the whole thing with a lump in my throat. I’ll be in bits at the end!
Many
#DoctorWho
villains have uttered the Doctor’s name over the years, but few have done it with the vitriolic contempt that Julian Glover does in this marvellous scene. A rightly lauded performance! A true acting legend!
Remembrance of the Daleks was the epitome of excitement for this 8 year old.
#Daleks
! In a school! And one that looked very like my primary school! The thought that a Dalek could glide around the corner at any time 🤩 Is it any wonder that I was hooked?
#DoctorWho
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the villainous contributions that the late Alan Bennion made to
#DoctorWho
in the 1960s and 1970s? He is to the Ice Warriors what David Banks is to the Cybermen. Each one of his Ice Lord portrayals is different! Azaxyr is my favourite! 🤩
Another of Mestor’s misguided
#DoctorWho
opinions: although I love Hartnell’s speech at the end of DIOE, his reaction to the departure of Ian and Barbara is far more powerful. Just look at his performance here; there is conviction in every frame, and it kills me every time 😢
For any
#DoctorWho
fan young or old who has never read a Target novelisation, it’s passages like these that make the best of them worth reading: the way Hulke fleshes out a relatively minor character in just one paragraph is a master stroke. He and Uncle Terrance were geniuses!
So, I’m sat here, eating my tea and watching repeats of 2 Point 4 Children, only to notice that there’s a VHS copy of
#DoctorWho
The Masque of Mandragora on the table. That’s made my evening that has!
I cannot believe what my wonderful school librarian placed into my hands this afternoon! “I was having a clear out of some shelves and thought you might like these
#DoctorWho
books!” Can’t wait to add them to my shelves at home!
With all the fallout and fan unpleasantness from the comments about
#Davros
by RTD, this seems an opportune moment to post a little
#DoctorWho
animation I completed a few years ago based on John Peel's novel War of the Daleks. I call it Davros: The Final End.
#Dalek
#davrosgate
This little exchange remains one of my favourite Doctor/Barbara interactions in
#DoctorWho
. A moment of no real significance but which sparkles with gentle humour and splendid performances! Divine!
Shout out to the wonderful Angela Bruce who is magnificent as Brigadier Bambera in
#DoctorWho
Battlefield. She was as much the definitive Brigadier to me as Nick Courtney (having not seen him in the role prior to this!) She definitely should have returned if Who hadn’t been axed!
I nominate this scene for Best Stunt Fall in the 60 years of
#DoctorWho
. It’s up against some stiff competition but it’s the way dear Terry Walsh (I think) just gets up and climbs back the way he came, giving the Auton an implacable menace that makes it really spectacular!
Simon Rouse gives one of the greatest guest performances in the history of
#DoctorWho
. His descent into madness is convincing and disturbing. Plus, this scene reminds me of myself in my office most Thursday afternoons 🙂
Okay Whovians of X: saw a variation of this elsewhere and decided to adapt…
A bit of Bank Holiday fun…
Which
#DoctorWho
character wasn’t the lead but stole the show?
I still think this is one of the most upsetting and disturbing scenes in
#DoctorWho
history. A vulnerable pensioner against an implacable alien menace. Betty Bowden excels in conveying the terror. I remember being upset that the Auton might kill her. She reminded me of my Nan!
One of the single greatest and most chilling scenes in the history of
#DoctorWho
: a father begging his daughter to kill him before he becomes something unspeakable! Alec Linstead is just perfect! Performance, direction, music… Gives me goosebumps every time!
I’m spending my Easter weekend with the Cybermen, as I encounter the
#DoctorWho
NA Iceberg, written by none other than the Cyberleader himself! Looking forward to this one!
Good night, Whovians of X! Genuinely emotional tonight as I’ve taken delivery of two enormous parcels of
#DoctorWho
sacred relics, the VHS tapes! Stuff your Blu-rays and iPlayers! This is where it all began! I’ve barely begun unpacking and the memories are flooding back!
Absolutely delighted with my ‘in the wild’
#DoctorWho
haul today! I’ve never had this much success in a single shop for some time! A marvellous start to the half term holiday! 🤩
Oh. My. Borads! It’s here! It’s here! It’s here! I did not think it would arrive today! Welcome home, Lungbarrow! Virgin
#DoctorWho
NAs complete at last! Thank you very much to
@ThisMorningCall
for getting in touch over this one! I am a very happy Mestor!
I’ve tweeted before and I’ll tweet it again: Malcolm Terris gives one of my favourite performances in
#DoctorWho
as the Co-Pilot in Horns of Nimon. Absolute conviction! He brings this nasty piece of work to life perfectly, even maintaining dignity with his split trousers! 🤩
“He’s never cruel, he’s never unkind…”
Fiddlesticks to that! I love it when
#DoctorWho
whacks nasty people with shovels, poisons them with cyanide, blows them up with their own explosives, and pushes them into their own distillation chambers!
Bringer of Darkness, indeed!
Showrunners of
#DoctorWho
attend, for Mestor speaks: this is how you do a companion leaving sequence! Not some drawn out, mawkish cheese fest on a beach! That second ‘Goodbye, Jamie’ from The Doctor, and Jamie’s crestfallen response is so powerful. Genuine and heartfelt! 😢
#DoctorWho
The Face of the Enemy is a superb novel that makes you feel like you’ve watched a UNIT spin-off series from the 70s. The book rewards the reader with plenty of surprises, and provides a superb vehicle for The Master’s villainy! Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wonderful! I’m adoring Carry on Screaming already and then this happens! It’s canon I tells ya! And the list of
#DoctorWho
alumni in this is considerable! What joy!
Just catching up with last week’s
#DoctorWho
Bargain Hunt! Well done, Declan, for knowing absolutely nothing about your merchandise or Classic Who history. ‘Expert mode’ indeed! NuWho fans! What would you do with them? 😜
Thank you all for your wonderful responses to my post about
#DoctorWho
on VHS. I found this marvellous advert in issue 150 of
@DWMtweets
for the range as it then stood in 1989. Looks like the Cyberman has bagged himself a copy of The Time Warrior!
My Year 11s have gone on study leave, I now have two free periods, I’ll be darned if I’m marking another sodding essay, so I’ve retreated to my hideaway to start my next
#DoctorWho
NA Conundrum! And I know this one is rather super!
Carry on Screaming was an absolute joy! I loved it! The mise en scene, the cast, some splendid lines! I dare say it isn’t typical of the franchise but I found it a marvellous parody of the horror genre! Some magnificent Doctor Who and Steptoe and Son references, too! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Metropolitan Police Box, Hammersmith, 1948. A battered example of a BBC Dr Who box. The police officer is from "F" Division which covers Fulham, Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush.
Goodnight, Whovians of X! Here’s a little nostalgic treat for
#DoctorWho
fans of a certain vintage. That bittersweet tune! In my book, you’re not a true fan unless you watched your VHS release to the very end!
Many thanks to
@thewhoshop
for making my Christmas and birthday visit today so much fun. Lovely to share those memories and anecdotes. Merry Christmas 🎄
#DoctorWho
Come on
#DoctorWho
fans of a certain vintage! Admit that this gives you waves of nostalgia you can almost feel! (PS. you were only a true fan if you watched right up into the closing logo as well 🤪)
Made my annual pre-birthday, pre-Christmas trip to The Who Shop. Pleased with my haul but staggered by some of the prices in the ‘Collectors’ cabinets! £150 for the 1973
#DoctorWho
Annual??!! I don’t think so! Merry Christmas 🎄
I adored Carry On Up The Khyber! What an ensemble! What fun! A personal favourite joke was the ‘Rank stupidity!’ line! Wonderful! I wonder if Carry On aficionados get their knickers in a twist over this in a way younger Doctor Who fans do over Talons 🤭 Loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It is ‘Excellent!’ to see much love for David Banks’s Cyberleader on my feed tonight! A true
#DoctorWho
legend! He builds on the foundation of the much underrated Christopher Robbie in Revenge, and makes the part entirely his own. He dominates every scene! Magnificent 🤩
I’ve been looking forward to this all week: the chance to resume my
#DoctorWho
NA marathon 😃 This weekend, I’m in the company of vampires and Uncle Terrance in Blood Harvest 🩸🩸🩸I’ll let you know how I get on!
It nearly ended up in my trolley. It really did! An alternative way of viewing the story, even if it’s a bit like a televised migraine! The original B&W episodes included, too!
Then I remembered about the Nick Briggs Dalek voices…
So it stayed on the shelf.
Many of the criticisms levelled at Timelash are fully justified but no
#DoctorWho
story with a villain as well realised and performed as The Borad can be all bad! That make-up! That voice! The Borad is ace! And he used to be married to Leela! (Shout out to Mr Darrow, too!)
Something that’s always irked me about
#DoctorWho
The Three Doctors is how awful the sets for Omega’s Palace are. Like a cross between a budget department store’s Christmas grotto and an explosion in a tin of Quality Street. Name a worse set in the show’s history, I dares ya!
I’ve had an absolutely marvellous day at
#invasionblackpool
Couldn’t stay for all of it, but had the privilege of meeting Nicola Bryant, and Colin Baker (who thanked me for saying lovely things about The Twin Dilemma). Many other highlights, too 🤩
#DoctorWho
Wonderful! 🐌
David John Pope as the Kandyman and Harold Innocent as Gilbert M are one of the best double acts in
#DoctorWho
. Pope owns the role as the murderous Frankensteinesque creation, and Innocent’s delivery of the black humour is pitch perfect! Like an intergalactic Steptoe & Son!
Having thoroughly enjoyed
#DoctorWho
The Chase last night, I had a rummage through my archive and found this bit of rubbish from 2009, back when figure animations were all the rage. I enjoyed doing it so thought I'd share it with my fellow Whovians once again.
#Dalek
#Daleks
Here’s a few
#DoctorWho
VHS tapes which survived my purge of the mid-2000s, which I’ve (literally) dusted off after my marvellous find this afternoon. I think it’s time they were restored to a place of respect in my collection!
Nothing to see here, fellow Whovians. Only Christopher Gable giving one of the finest performances in the history of
#DoctorWho
. What a sublime piece of casting! And, my word… is there a more painful looking slap in any other episode? That looked like it really hurt!
I’m truly saddened to learn of the death of Chris Boucher. The importance of The Robots of Death on my journey as a
#DoctorWho
fan cannot be understated. I adore it, and Image of the Fendahl, too. And so, in tribute tonight… God speed, Chris, and thank you!
#RIPChrisBoucher
This weekend’s
#DoctorWho
literary experience will be the original Target novelisation of Warriors’ Gate! I hope it will shed some light on a television serial I cannot make head nor tail of! I’ll let you know!
I’ve been a very lucky Gastropod with my haul of Christmas presents this year
🎁 🎄
Thought I’d share my
#DoctorWho
acquisitions!
Hope St Nicholas brought you all that you desired!
Merry Christmas 🎄
I’m sure it won’t interest you in the slightest to learn that it is 28 years to the very day, Saturday 3rd December, that I met Jon Pertwee at the
@thewhoshop
at the Albert Dock in Liverpool. A treasured memory. And so tonight, in tribute to the great man…
#DoctorWho
#Daleks
Here on Jaconda we raise a glass in birthday memoriam to a true legend of
#DoctorWho
, Patrick Troughton! Oh my word, great jumping gobstoppers, when I say ‘run’ run… And all that…
I’ve commented on this before but this scene gets me every time! Superbly written and performed, it makes Morgaine such a complex character; she murders a soldier for information, and then seconds later cures a woman’s blindness! A very special
#DoctorWho
moment!
Time to begin this
#DoctorWho
anomaly. Never knew what to make of this one when browsing the bookshelves as a teenager. Never had it in my collection until last year. Apparently it’s a good’un!
Quite possibly my favourite death scene in the history of
#DoctorWho
. An evil entity channels the resentment of his dead host just for the pleasure of killing. That twisted smile at the end… Simply sublime and played to perfection!
A
#DoctorWho
scene that gives me goosebumps every single time. It tells us so much about these despicable characters. The performances are sublime from Roeves and Holder! I challenge the ‘RTD2’ era to give us anything as gritty as this on a Saturday teatime!
I believe on receipt of this particular artefact one is supposed to tweet ‘Contact has been made’ but I won’t resort to such a hackneyed response! I simply bask in the joy of owning the newest and oldest physical media releases of these sacred serials!
#DoctorWho
I know that Lillias Walker has recently left us to join that increasingly lengthening roster of
#DoctorWho
legends whose earthly light has gone out.
But my word how brightly she shone in Terror of the Zygons. Pure nightmare fuel! A performance of absolute conviction!
And so through misty eyes I once again finish The Green Death. It also occurs to me that Michael E Briant is responsible for four
#DoctorWho
stories that mean the world to me. I’ll probably never get to meet him to tell him, but thank you, sir, for the wonder!
You voted, my Whovians friends, and I have listened! The next
#DoctorWho
book on my literary odyssey will be The Face of the Enemy. I’m very intrigued by this one! I remember hearing good things about it at the time, so here goes… 📖
#DoctorWho
novel Who Killed Kennedy… Wow! Just wow! An absolute must read if you love the Third Doctor era and UNIT. It is a feast of continuity indulgence but written in an innovative, engaging style. I won’t spoil any surprises but oh… Poor Dodo 😢 Just read it! 5/5
I always feel a little sad when watching
#DoctorWho
State of Decay. William Lindsay, who plays Lord Zargo, died only six years after broadcast at the tragically young age of 40. I’ve always enjoyed his performance in this serial!
The highlight of
#DoctorWho
Galaxy 4 is Stephanie Bidmead’s magnificent portrayal of Maaga. She brings a significant gravitas to the role, conveying a quiet yet tangible menace. She died at the tragically young age of 45, but she is never forgotten by us Whovians!
Time to observe one of my
#DoctorWho
rituals! It was early November 1993 when the BBC repeated Planet of the Daleks as part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations! It was the first time I got to experience this story, and it remains one of my favourite Dalek serials!
I understand that many
#DoctorWho
fans have a mental block when it comes to The Twin Dilemma; I’ve heard the many tired views of umpteen podcasters on the subject. But there are so many humorous scenes and examples of witty verbiage, beautifully performed, and sadly ignored!
Happy 50th birthday to the range that inspired generations of
#DoctorWho
fans: the Target books! So many happy memories! I thought I’d share 4 of my favourites! Oh, and I might just have bought three hardbacks today in celebration. It would have been rude not to!
Friday night’s
#DoctorWho
will be an emotional one for me; the story which, without hyperbole, changed my life! The story that made me a fan! There’ll be a lump in my throat and a dewy eye all the way through. A sublime marvel for which I am forever grateful…
It isn’t every day that one comes home from work to find a
#DoctorWho
holy grail on the doormat. Today is one of those days! Just look at this sacred relic! That cover 🤩 Is it not magnificent? I feel blessed to add this rare tome to my collection!
@JuliaHB1
Absolutely not! I am a teacher, have refused to wear a mask in the classroom, and can confirm that they are a barrier to learning. Plus, children have still been forced to self-isolate repeatedly, even though they've been wearing them. A pointless policy!
Aside from the fact that this scene reminds me that I must use this expression more in everyday conversation, it is the single best reaction to the interior of the TARDIS in the history of
#DoctorWho
Note, NuWho fans, that he doesn’t blub or need to be asked if he’s “okay” 🤪
I pause for a moment in tribute to two actors whose very presence in
#DoctorWho
Attack of the Cybermen elevates it to another level: Maurice Colbourne, who’s blooming terrifying, and Brian Glover who’s awesome in everything! RIP legends!
