Terribly sad news this evening that Pat Smullen has passed away. Nine times champion jockey and an inspirational figure in racing and Irish society. May he rest in peace. Our thoughts are with Frances and their children Hannah, Paddy & Sarah.

Big news today that hurling-mad racehorse owner J.P. McManus has donated โฌ100,000 to each of the 32 GAA county boards across Ireland. He asks that the money is divided equally between all clubs.
Sad to report the passing of retired trainer Joe Crowley, aged 91. His daughters Annemarie (married to Aidan O'Brien) and Frances (married to Pat Smullen) both trained from his Piltown, Co Kilkenny, yard where his grandson Joseph O'Brien is now based. Funeral details to follow.

Jump jockey Jack Kennedy paid a flying visit to New York today and won the Grade 1 Lonesome Glory Hurdle on Zanjabeel. Kennedy won the Foxbrook Champion Hurdle at Far Hills (NJ) on the same horse last year.

Pat Smullen has announced his retirement from race-riding.
