Cubs to Alzolay 2 weeks ago: Need more time in AAA
Cubs to Alzolay a week ago: You're up, as a RP
Cubs to Alzolay 5 days ago: You're a SP
Cubs to Alzolay yesterday: We don't know what to do with you
Cubs to Alzolay this AM: You're staying
Cubs to Alzolay now: You're the ace
Addison Russell today has not advanced on a wild pitch, gotten doubled off 2nd on a liner to LF the next pitch, lost a pop-up “double” in the sun that led to a run, didn’t score from 3rd on a groundball that the shortstop had to backhand, & tossed his bat in the stands on a K.
Contreras compares the
#STLCards
and Cubs organizations: "For me, I like this better. It's a better organization. Old school way, which I love it. ... Ever since I got here it's been everything just one way. The Cardinal way."
Really can't be overstated how much Jeimer Candelario impacts this team.
Professional at-bats with slugging, left and right-handed, with solid defense at 1st and 3rd.
Basically the "hope" for Assad was to give 4-5 innings and keep the team in the game.
7 IP, 1 ER, and cruising for pretty much all of it on the road vs a very good team. 🔥🔥🔥
14 runs tonight.
And on the season...
Willson Contreras: 176 wRC+ (3rd in the NL)
Kris Bryant: 162 wRC+ (5th in the NL)
Javy Baez: 158 wRC+ (7th in the NL)
Anthony Rizzo: 140 wRC+ (13th in the NL)
But yesterday I got tweets asking where the runs will come from
Javier Assad now has a 174-inning sample of being a 2.90 ERA pitcher in the major leagues.
And he's just looking better of late (2.00 ERA in 27 IP so far this season).
It's potentially a pretty massive development- and has already been huge for them either way.
Former Cub & World Series Champion, Miguel Montero has announced his retirement
Never forget his amazing 8th inning grand slam in Game 1 of the 2016 NLCS 🙌
Kris Bryant says playing all over the place helps block out some of the noise to focus.
"Right now, I still got the Cubs on my chest and I'm proud of that. Proud to play for such an unbelievable city. And until they tell me I'm not, I'm gonna go out there and give it all I got."
Jordan Wicks, Daniel Palencia, Luke Little leading a huge win in a pennant race. That's so awesome and exactly what this franchise had not been getting for so long.
Pedro Strop is a Cubs legend. He's hurt still or his arm is shot. It's not him just sucking out of nowhere. Don't be mad at Pedro. Be mad at relying on Pedro right now.
25 years from now:
"Wow, what was it like seeing Kris Bryant, the greatest Cub of our lifetime, play on a regular basis?"
"Actually, nobody really cared."
Much of the baseball world has been brainwashed to think this is the right way to handle things.
How about just keep your Hall of Fame talent and build around him? They’ll spend the next decade trying to find another Kris Bryant otherwise (and very well may come up empty).
If
#Cubs
are doing it right, they'll trade Kris Bryant around July 1 and get back premier talent in low, low levels of minor leagues that fans have never heard of.
That's what
@jonmorosi
told
@DannyParkins
@MattSpiegel670
.
Marlins lose to the Rays 3-0 in 10. Swept in 2 games. The offense simply does not score runs anymore. Dead last the NL. How is this possible ? They are under .500 for the first time since May. To top it all off ? David Robertson got beat again in the end. My goodness.
I really do not understand, for the life of me, Jeimer Candelario continuing to bat 7th- especially vs right-handed pitching.
He's 10th in the majors in OPS among qualified hitters vs righties.
The Cubs went from clear-cut sellers to buying the best rental bat on the market.
Pretty massive change of direction and perception for the franchise (and message to the locker room and fan base), and they were able to do it while keeping the farm in strong shape.
This has been the most impressive Christopher Morel stretch yet, to me.
He really appears to be making some adjustments. Using the whole field, being selective, making more contact, etc.
Will it stay? Remains to be seen. But it's very encouraging and his ceiling is immense.
Those are 3 *massive* wins for the Cubs. The upcoming stretch is rough on paper, but these games against the Brewers and Reds are essentially twice as valuable.
Huge, huge wins, and awesome job by the pitching staff tonight to grind through.
This is a sneaky way to try to make the throw from 3rd base easier if given time.
Watch how Nick Madrigal takes a few steps to shorten the length of the throw & also add momentum to get more zip on it.
He's made it work so far. 1 of only 8 MLB 3B with at least 3 DRS & 3 OAA.
The other thing with the Dansby Swanson move is the Cubs have made it clear they're actually trying, which could make them more appealing now to the shorter-term veterans, a la Justin Turner, Michael Conforto, JD Martinez.
Just unserious stuff from the organization if they don't try hard to get this done. They just locked up an elite middle infield defense and this is a pitcher tailored to those skillsets, as his 2.42 ERA and 61.0 GB% show.
@ChiefCub
My agent and I made multiple attempts to engage them on an extension. Club wasn’t interested in exploring it now. Will see how it plays out! Love everything about the
@Cubs
organization!
“My hip feels fine, Theo.”
“No it doesn’t.”
“But seriously I feel good.”
“No, you suffered a hip injury over the weekend.”
“But really I-“
“Say it with me: ‘I hurt my hip over the weekend. It’s something I’ve experienced in the past.’”
BREAKING: First baseman Rhys Hoskins and the Milwaukee Brewers are finalizing a two-year, $34 million contract with an opt-out after the first season, sources tell ESPN.
Tucker Barnhart:
.159/.260/.175, 29 wRC+ in 73 plate appearances.
Even if you love his catching, it's a big disadvantage playing with the old NL rules when nobody else is.
So I just realized the Cubs have...
2 walk-off grand slams
From 2 genuinely good dudes
At night
At Wrigley
Vs NL East teams
That are playoff contenders
And that's fun
Frank Schwindel has outperformed Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javy Baez, Jake Marisnick, Craig Kimbrel, and Trevor Williams combined since the trade deadline.
