Well, I’m having my first experience of smart motorway issues.
Blown tyre in the fast lane. Very carefully limped my way to the refuge. Called the SOS phone and NOBODY ANSWERED.
Tried twice. It rang and rang and rang, but no reply.
As vinyl record sales continue to grow, can the supply keep up with demand? And can small independent labels get the production they need?
I’ve been finding out for

, with help from

Just in case you missed it, this is how you wish the entire world a Happy New Year from London, via the
@bbcworldservice
Have an excellent 2024 everyone!
After much careful thought and research, I think I've finally worked out the logic behind the
@BBCNews
one-way system.
(With apologies to
@BBCSimonMcCoy

@HighwaysSEAST
Just to clarify, the breakdown people were great and I’ve now reached my destination.
Thank you everyone for your concern and advice!
Luckily I have breakdown cover and a mobile phone.
If I didn’t, though, I have no idea what I would do right now…
Why has nobody answered,
@NationalHways
@HighwaysSEAST
?
🚨🚨Career News🚨🚨
I’d just like to announce that (as far as I’m aware) I haven’t been recruited by GB News as their new reporter.
Along with some of the 7 or 8 people who still work for the BBC, I’ll be bringing you the latest
@bbcworldservice
bulletins through the night.
Just to give you an idea how much effort goes into getting things right for
@bbcworldservice
news output, this is a list of correct pronunciations I’ve researched for just one afternoon of bulletins.
Very proud to be sitting in this chair on the day the
@bbcworldservice
turns 90 years old.
Especially as it allows me to read a rather legendary quote from Lord Reith. (🔊 Sound on!)
Message from your long-suffering Producer when you *accidentally* hit delete on a substantial chunk of the running order, about 5 minutes before going on air…
(Sorry
@RLGerrish
)
People elsewhere in the world may wonder what the British version of Microsoft Windows looks like.
It’s basically the same as everywhere else, just with this written on the taskbar…
Had a bit of a chat with some colleagues yesterday about diversity in the contributors we use for news and radio programming.
Speaking for myself (and people I work with) diversity is an absolute core of what we do... 🧵
Just finished a rather amazing weekend presenting
@bbc5live
breakfast for the first time!
My massive thanks to everyone concerned, but mostly to the legend that is
@EllyOldroyd
for not tearing her hair out too much as I got my head around everything :)
@FilipeG15016881
It does actually, only a space-saver though.
I’m normally all for changing a wheel myself. If it had been on the passenger side I might have tried it, but there just isn’t enough space between you and the 70mph traffic.
I’m not risk averse, but I couldn’t chance it.
Fancy getting some designer jewellery worth thousands, for just £11?
An error in an online shop let Mexican Doctor
@LordeDandy
do just that…
My latest report for
@itvnews
this lunchtime.
Finally got around to updating the
@bbcworldservice
timing sheets.
Here is an indication of how filthy a piece of white paper gets when it’s left sellotaped to a desk in the newsroom for two years…
If my calculations are correct, at 05:30 this morning it was exactly 20 years since I started my first shift for the BBC (as a youthful 18 year old on
@bbcradiowales
newly-launched early programme 'Summer Saturday').
I'm assuming I get some kind of medal from the DG?
Wore a suit and tie for an evening’s
@bbcworldservice
news and got nothing but stick from my colleagues.
Someone needs to keep the standards up, don’t they?
🚨🚨IMPORTANT NEWS 🚨🚨
Pleased to be able to report that, after being hurtfully stolen and moved to a kitchen upstairs, the
@bbcworldservice
coffee pot has been successfully recaptured and is now back in service in the newsroom.
Well, that was all a bit unexpected…
I’ve had such an amazing response to my video yesterday. Thank you so much to everyone who replied or messaged. Apols if I didn’t manage to engage with everyone.
It was heart-warming to hear how important sharing stories like this can be.
Our washing machine is knackered...
We've realised that (most of the time) you can release the door when it jams by thumping it twice and then grabbing the handle. So, naturally, this had to be done...
(Sound on)
My delve into the world of multi-industry careers continues...
I spoke to
@ThomasDolby
on
@BBCNews
and
@BBCOne
this morning, to hear about his switch from music into technology and teaching.
(Apologies to
@VValentineNews
for some rather unexpected out-words!)
This will probably make me sound very old, but when I started this job everything was played from tapes and minidiscs.
There’s still a part of me that’s amazed to see the computer knit together complicated sequences all by itself…
Bit of news: After several years, I’ll be leaving my job as a
@BBCWales
TV announcer next month. It’s been tremendous fun, and I’ve worked with some great people, but it’s time for me to move on and for someone else to become ‘The annoying voice between the programmes’
There are a few special moments from my years in this business.
Hearing the guy who used to be on my Mum's car radio when I was being taken to swimming lessons say "...and David Harper's on news" at the top of his
@BBCRadio2
show was definitely one of them.
You'll be missed.
So there we are, my last night on the telly for
@BBCWales
. It’s been amazing to be a little part of
@BBCOne
and
@BBCTwo
these last few years. I really will miss it.

Another little insight into the inner workings of the newsroom. When we use an audio clip, we tend to write the ‘out words’ (the last words you hear) in the script, so the presenter knows when it’s finished.
Sometimes, though, the out words aren’t words at all…
We talk a lot about the awful people. People who go out of their way to inject misery into a day, in person or online.
The last week has taught me that there are also some truly lovely people in this world, and they are more worth of our conversation. We shouldn’t forget that.
Decided it might be time to stop hiding behind a caricature of myself, which was drawn quite a few years ago.
So here you are, Twitter, this is the real me...
Lesser known fact about my broadcasting career: Until today I was the continuity voice of BBC One Oxford. I’ve also directed the South Today Oxford news programme on more than a couple of occasions.
Really sad to see their last programme go out tonight.
Devastated to report that my beloved MG TF was stolen from East London earlier today. It's a very distinctive 'Nocturne Blue' colour with a tan interior and a black hard top.
If anyone sees it, or has any info, I'd be very grateful if they could get in touch. Shares welcome!
If you’re wondering why being a
@bbcworldservice
News Presenter requires more attention to detail and pronunciation research than other jobs, these all appeared in a single news bulletin this afternoon.
Broadcasting to a global audience is a great privilege and a real challenge.
Cardiff friends - can anyone help with this? It’s very out of character and rather worrying. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Please share if you can.
